I have a 51mm espresso machine and I've been experimenting with single shots over the last few weeks. First, I tried a "normal" shaped single basket with something between 11-12g (according to the coin test) and got great coffees. I try to take 2 a day with this amount. Secondly, I tested a La Pavoni basket with a conical shape with 8.5-9g of coffee (also according to the coin test). With this second basket, the coffees are rounder, it is difficult to make mistakes in terms of both acidity and bitterness, but I found the body to be somewhat weak, testing with several coffees. My goal is to drink as many espressos as possible without generating anxiety spikes. When I only have time for 1 espresso, I use 16g in a normal IMS basket, it's the most coffee I can drink at once without feeling anxious. Here in Brazil we have access to a variety called Aramosa, which has 50% less caffeine, which is also great.

Most people don't take the time to try the moka pot and experiment. That's a shame as when used as indicated it will produce a great flavored coffee. Nice, accurate video.

Pretty much my own experience. I have a midrange expresso machine, but I stopped using it once I got my mocha pot down pat. the mocka pot in question is the same cheap Stainless Steel Chinese model you showed. I chose that one because I could use it on a induction top. That didn't really work out, and I now use a gas flame with a defuser to control the temperature. I use 20 grams of coffee, and 180 grams of water to make 2 cups. I find I get the best results by lightly tapping around the edge of the basket to slightly compact the coffee and then level off. I also use pre boiled water. I get inconsistent results with my expresso machine, I love that rich creamy texture I am sometimes able to get, instead I mostly end up with merely good coffee. On the other hand while I can't get that rich creamy results I get from the Expresso machine, I find on the whole I prefer the more complex flavours of the Mocka Pot, and I love the consistency. I agree with you about the grinder, I suspect I could improve my consistency using 8the Expresso machine if I invested in a better grinder. Given how happy I am with the Mocha pot that's unlikely to happen. These days the only time I use the Expresso machine is when I have guests, and they love the results 😂

Thanks for the story! Happy to find someone that resonates with my thoughts. Just a small correction, it's spelled "Espresso", not "Expresso". Don't worry, it's derived from Italian and language differences get a bit annoying sometimes. A while ago, some viewers do not like the idea of weighing coffee and water for Moka because "it's designed not to be complicated". Would you agree with this? My (and some others') experience of testing dozens of brews do not seem to be enough to convince them otherwise somehow. Maybe you could help!

I'm one of "those people" that always reads the Owner's Manual. At the top of page 10, you'll see a section called "Temp Unit Change". It states that if you do a long press of the "temp" and "foam" buttons at the same time, and hold it for 5 seconds, that flips the temperature display between F and C (and back again). Yup... the DREO engineers know both of the most common temperature systems in use and accounted for the ability to switch back and forth between them. Sorry.... looks like Kelvin isn't on that list. :-) Also, a tip for new users: remove the frothing pot from the base when adding your cold milk to it, and once filled, then place it on the base. That prevents any potential for milk spillage into the base. When I look at the inside of the base in your video, it appears you've had some spillage in there which has browned from heating. A small change in process will eliminate that risk completely. Great review, and thank you for posting! ...and for humour value, I saw this on a t-shirt... somewhat related... a temperature comparison chart: Fahrenheit: 0° really cold 100° really hot Celsius: 0° fairly cold 100° dead Kelvin: 0° dead 100° dead

I'm 71% sure you're a Dreo engineer... Jokes aside, I better read every page on the manual before reviewing next time. Thank you for the very valuable tip. Kelvin is still the best for me and you have no right to dispute that 😜

Hi, just found out your video.. wondering have you ever measure how much your espresso volume in ml? Been using portable electric espresso maker so need to compare the output volume. And one last thing does it matter if use 400 ml pitcher/ jug? Assuming uae the same milk volume
@EntekCoffee
@EntekCoffee 26 күн бұрын
I usually measure my Espresso in grams, but in my experience, my Lattes could do fine with anywhere between a single ristretto (7gr) to triple lungo (66gr). I don't consider the espresso volume or weight of the espresso to be a critical factor. The jug is also not a critical factor, especially if you go up (if you pour 250 ml, you need at least 400. more is fine, less, probably not).

Check out Dreo's Kickstarter page to get exclusive deals on the Barista Maker: dreo-1.kckb.me/edb0ed8b Please ignore the Fahrenheit and Celcius concern (and the stupid nerd joke), as this turns out to be addressable, check @cdpond's comment! Note that around 2:18, I mentioned that you have to set the temperature with the right button to set the temperature. This was a mistake on my part, as the latte presets would set the PID around the 160 F (~70 C) mark automatically. There is actually no need to set the temperature manually. Additionally, everything beside the base is dishwasher safe. Apologies for the flickering and the shaking throughout the video. I am not sure what's causing them, but I can only apologize for now. I hope this gets fixed in the next videos.

Well, if you pull both shots back to back the difference is probably due to the fact that the machine is warmer on the second shot. So bitterness may come from not preheating enough, I might be wrong of course.
@EntekCoffee

You're right, but I didn't take back to back shots here AFAIK. There should be a substantial time difference between the shots, enough for the heat of the PF to dissipate.

I'm not sure if I can agree with "Otten Coffee is overrated" as a general assessment, but you're right. Some of their products are rebranded OEMs sold for prices higher than the market price (including this metal frother). Regardless of how many percent off you get, I don't think you should get this.

For the beginners that dont want to spend too much there are also good manual hand grinders for under 100$. Also I am a beginner myself on a strict budget and I am currently using a Gaggia md15 with DIY shims and it gets the job done (fairly well tbh). Was also thinking of getting the MHW3Bomber R3 grinder (i think that i got the name right this time) because it seems good for the price, but I am not in a hurry. It's new so it is going to take some time for people to start finding out the flaws. Also living in a country that doesn't have access to Amazon can be pretty challenging so mostly of my stuff comes from trusted aliexpress stores.
@EntekCoffee
@EntekCoffee 2 ай бұрын
Gaggia's entry to budget was very exciting, they're known to build affordable but extremely reliable machines. The MD15 is one that I'd like to try, but as the time of speaking it's very hard to get in my country. You can't beat manual grinders' value with electric grinders, though. They're just very different machines. My $149.99 1zpresso J-Max is built like a tank and grinds the same class of consistency and accuracy as my Eureka Mignon (maybe even better). It's not even a close match to these electric ones for espresso.
@draganthebest
@draganthebest 2 ай бұрын
@EntekCoffee tbh Gaggia md15 was the only thing that was available to me because of the import taxes and stuff making the 1zpresso and similar grinders not worth considering. The stock Gaggia md15 isn't the best, but with a bit of fiddling and a bit of DIY-ing, because I can't get the official shims where I live, I got it to the level where it grinds fine enough for a good espresso. 👍

I'm not gonna lie, hanf drinkers suck when you want more than one shot and you want to get shots put fast. I'd get a budget electric grinder for $200 to 300 before I do hand grinders again. Hand grinders are a waste of time in getting thru your workflow. And besides, good hand grinders will usually cost the same as a budget electric grinder ....

I've wasted a lot of money on cheap electric grinders over the years. They break or they just don't do the job. If you can't afford a good electric one you're better off with a hand grinder which you can get a good espresso one for $100 I'm actually trying to go as low-tech as possible with my setup as cheap electronic stuff just does not tend to last. I do have a DF83 but I need new burrs for it which is another huge expense so just using my hand grinder for now. it works fine. Kind of regret buying that in the 1st place

Been using this mysterious grinder for a while now (around 2 and a half months) and has still been rock solid. This was also the same impression I had with my old ZD-10, so as I said, I'm afraid sample size is too small for now. I'll have to check other options. Mind you if you can tell me what exact grinders you have an experience with?
@Iridescence93
@Iridescence93 2 ай бұрын
@@EntekCoffee good you've found something you like then. it's fine to use entry level stuff til you decide how much effort and money you want to invest. The thing is it can end up being more expensive in the long run if you buy things that you constantly want to upgrade. I used a cheap Baratza grinder for a long time that didn't really get the beans fine enough. I figured it was good enough but that was a mistake. I've had a couple from Breville that didn't last at all. The one I had from Ascaso for a while was probably the best of the "cheap grinders" (still cost a few hundred dollars) but the burrs were really too small to grind well. Been doing this for 20 years I've learned that certain grind quality is just required and there's a reason "cheap" electric grinders are cheap. I do find the quality of grind I get from my hand grinder is right up with expensive ones like the DF83 and I don't really mind the effort so I recommend that if people want to save money. I believe there is also a 54 mm version of the DF83 that goes pretty cheap now. That seems like an excellent burr set for that price if you really need an electric one.

There's a lot of decent 2nd hand grinders you can acquire from people who thought maybe they'd be into coffee (especially during 2020-2022) but have realised they're not and now want to move them on. Breville/Sage is probably the biggest, other OEMs depending on where you live
