Not to be "that guy," 😂 but TFP, the Aligned prequel novels, & the Covenant of Primus book all present Megatron's cause in a pretty sympathetic light (methods aside) for the most part up until he cuts ties in the High Council hearing. Some would argue he wasn't shown enough sympathy considering he was up against a corrupt system left over from the Quintesson regime. Heck, the guy even mentored & inspired a lot of Orion Pax's ideals. Alpha Trion & Orion had reservations about Megatron- but even in Exodus Orion defended & stood by Megatron at almost every turn (before the Hearing). Reading the entire High Council scene is pretty eye opening with how the odds have been stacked so high against Megatron. His ex-miner & gladiator status colors a lot of the Council's view and they don't take him seriously, no matter how agreeable or how (shockingly!) politely he ended his testimony. He really begins to lose his cool when Orion starts "stealing" the limelight & trying to present himself as a less dangerous option (in his view) & the Council starts talking in circles. Heck, the only reason the hearing even happened is because Alpha Trion requested it upon Orion's request & suggested that he be the next Prime. His higher caste and connections definitely aided him, so I don't think we can just dismiss that "favor" was indeed a factor that got the ball rolling. I'm not saying he wasn't worthy of seeking the Matrix (because he absolutely was the most worthy), but the Council was always going to be more partial to Orion than Megatron. And not to nitpick (it's just something that I really like about the aligned continuity) but Orion wasn't chosen because of his leadership capabilities (he hadn't done a lot of leading up until the Hearing) but his vision of hope for the future. Megatron’s testimony was all about addressing the wrongs of their society NOW, while Orion's testimony was all about a hope for the future. It was his visionary quality that inspired everyone that day- the Covenant of Primus even says as much calling 13's (Optimus Prime) best quality being that he is a "Dreamer" who can unite everyone. It's important to note that this was easily the most enticing option compared to Megatron, who was extremely jaded by the plight of the lowe castes & sought change through any means necessary. Anyways, this was perhaps a bit much for a random comment 😅 I bid you the very best Pineapple. I think we both care dearly for these characters & I just wanted to share an overlooked aspect of Megatron and Optimus' early lives. Nuance is fun.
