I believe what you said about the disobeying of the orders in reference to the life boats to be incorrect. The captain dithered trying to figure out how to save it by beaching it involving course changes. This allowed the bow to flood more lifting the props out of the water and when the boats launched the 2 got swept back into the props. I believe this to be the case, happy to be corrected if you know different.

All that marine life on the exterior of the wreck makes it look like it’s been draped in flowers. It really is the more beautiful sister of the Titanic.

Thank you Mark for this great follow-up on deep stops including the content of your Deco book. What a thankful situation that so much simulation and actual research has been done on tissue decompression and the different deco models at this point in time... and also that you have summarized the body of knowledge so comprehensibly for the interested diver audience. Imagining starting to step into to what is considered technical diving would feel a whole lot scarier without it, in hindsight. In retrospect, I also feel grateful for actually not getting bent on my past rec dives... and I mean that some concepts from your book (especially the 16-tissue Bühlmann model) should actually be taught already in the basic open water course to promote an early understanding of decompression at novice divers - the lack of which is in my opinion the main reason for why so many rec divers tend to violate the limits proposed for their qualification levels.

I've probably been more worried about IPO than I should've been. It's just scary when there's seemingly nothing you can do to prevent or predict it. Being a woman who dives in cold water all year round (both risk factors), I'll admit that it has crossed my mind if I should skip the last glass of water before doing an ice dive. None of the studies I've found on it have quantified the amount of water that actually counts as "overhydration", so this puts me a bit at ease. Thank you.

We dove Bikini in 2005. You could still fly on to the atoll at that time. About half our expedition was open circuit and the rest was closed. There was no trimix at that time. There was a lot of narcosis. You decompressed hanging off of a trapeze hanging at 30 feet with surface supplied 80% O2. The dive briefings were a great mix of safety and history. Discussing the history of the ships and the times they served in added great significance to the dives. The video documentary I shot on the trip has helped me convey the unique experiences we had on the atoll to others over the years since.
