Great video! I did use a product that contained sodium percarbonate. I did dampen the deck prior to application. I used a stiff brush to apply and agitate. I then let it sit. Directions said to let it sit, but it was drying out. I don’t have a power washer, so I defaulted to a hose. I should have said at the beginning, this was a new cedar deck from September 2023. Our carpenter said to seal it in the spring since he felt it needed to dry. After winter it needed a good cleaning. We’ve had nothing but rain and tornados since spring. The hose just didn’t seem to remove the product it looked like a gel or slim residue was left. I tried rescrubbing and hosing it off, a squeegee, nothing seemed to work. This morning it looks blotchy, I’m really at a loss. I may have to contact a pro locally at this point. I can send you a picture if you like. I’m really at a loss. Thank you for this video & your time. 😊

What would you recommend for a New Hampshire (non-coastal) house with western red cedar shingles? They are about three years old, untreated, and starting to grey and blacken variably around the house. I would like them to age naturally - but I don't think it will age uniformly (a little difference is fine). Should I simply have them cleaned every few years? Solid stain? I like your channel and would love any advice you have.

Is there a recommended treatment for new red cedar siding? We live in Syracuse NY, and love cedar sided houses. Should we leave the shingles bare and natural or as far as products what would you recommend- I.E. CedarShield / or a transparent / hydrophobic / mildew-cide? I’m interested in preserving the natural look of the shingles, and have decided to not stain or paint. There’s a lot of techniques / products - however, I know houses in Cape Cod are the benchmark that stand the test of time.

Wow, incredible! I used your method on my redwood deck. The oxalic acid applied while still wet works wonders. Now, do I leave it or stain it? I would love to leave it and observe deck life without stain . However, it has been stained twice before and so, I will probably do that again. I am using a new stain called Penofin; it contains a mildewcide. We'll see what results I get. Live and learn, it's a glorious thing,

I've got a job on a cedar sided house where the home owner wants only the lower half of the house to be restained. The upper portion of the house actually seems to be in good shape but the lower is peeling. Last stained 15 years ago with Sikkens. I'm hesitant to only do the lower half and spoke with them about the large possibility that the color would not come out the same. Is it even possible for me to treat with sodium percarb on the lower half, power wash, and then restain the lower portion? Would I need oxalic in this case if I were going right to stain? Seems like a bad idea to me and will be really inconsistent.

I have used a power washer (DIY Clueless) on my brick patio that is soft set ( sand inbetween each brick). What a mess that was. Sand all over me, all over the house. It took forever to follow the outline of each brick. It looked great when I was done but the time it took was too much. I just purchased a Briggs and Stratton surface cleaner and so much cleaner and faster. Thanks to you Nate, I will be applying some sort of detergent from now on. I am looking forward to the results. This is how 99.99% of shingles on Cape are installed and have been for hundreds of years. They shrink just like the ones you showed had shrunk after being installed tight. The cupping and bowing is usually on south facing walls where shingles have been cooked by the sun for years. Just like you are likely to see moss or mildew on the north facing wall. Go back to that house in a few years and show the same wall, shingles will be gapped.

@@TheVaado unless your nighttime temps are very warm or hot, you're fine to mix the night before. It's temp and sunlight which makes the sodium percarbonate solution kick off and go bad. How much pressure (psi) is safe for cedar? Great work btw cheers
@OutsideCleaners
@OutsideCleaners 22 күн бұрын
@@dmv_p if there was a simple answer, I’d share it. But “Safe“ pressure for cedar varies tremendously based on so many factors: type of cedar (red, white, yellow…), age and condition of the cedar, hot or cold water, and most importantly: how far away is your tip from the cedar? Varying the distance by even an inch or two makes a tremendous difference on how much pressure the cedar actually receives…. If we were talking about fiberglass or vinyl siding or concrete driveways, we could talk about a particular number. I just see too many variables to be able to talk about a Safe PSI for cedar.

Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! Just wondering, would you do anything differently (or additionally) for prep if there is old stain already on the siding and I want to restain. I am not sure what was on there before so I will test a few different samples after cleaning but probably go with something darker and semi-transparent or solid. I know that you aren't a painter but perhaps you have done prep for a paint crew or homeowner that intended on staining?
@OutsideCleaners
@OutsideCleaners 24 күн бұрын
Some stains will readily wash off from Step #1 showed here. Other stains will only really get washed off via chemical stripping, which is totally different than I illustrate here. I'd probably start with what I show here in Step #1, and if that removes the old stain, I'd likely skip the "brightening" part of this video as I'm not aware that it would make any difference as to how well the new stain takes hold. If Step #1 here doesn't remove the old stain at all, then I'd consider chemically stripping. Again, that's a different (and far more dangerous) process...
