Totally understand. The only reason I have a tank now, my neighbour died, and they would have ended up dead, too. I couldn't bear to release them in the wild, they would be eaten pretty quickly. I also find it unethical to breed fish alltogether. I never want to see animals caged, birds, fish, any type of animal should not be caged. Unless they are injured wildlife. Thank you, dear!

I lost a goldfish many years ago but kept the moss ball from her tank in a jar, I noticed this year these small green dots floating around so I looked closer and found them to be creatures. Thank you for your explanation!!! As a Sea Monkey enthusiast I'm extra excited to now have an extra shrimp tank

I would definitely agree with you about the ethics of the fancy goldfish industry! If it really does bother you, I would challenge you to take down any videos that you made concerning them. If you are making money on those videos then actually you are still supporting those practices that people have deemed unethical. I understand that it would be a sacrifice but it would show that you truly are serious about being against the practice. This is, of course, just my humble opinion. In any case, I wish you well.

I really like your approach and love for your frogs! I´m planning to get two of these too, thankfully I have kept amphibians for almost 30 years already (started out as a teen girl with Hyla cinerea) and never had Dumpy frogs because I was afraid they would be too noisy. But now I want to try and hopefully find two females. I´m having my tank built by a terrarium builder here in Germany and since we have stricter regulations as to minimum size, mine will be even bigger than that. I think minimum size here is 360 gallons and 1 meter height to ensure they have enough space to climb. Mine will be 550 gallons (100 x 50 width x 110 centimeters height), so other people would put like 5 oder 6 frogs in that, but I only want two. What is your cleaning routine? I really don´t know how to set it up in regard to that... I guess I will just hose it down and wash all the poo away through a draining hole at the bottom side once a week or so... And it will be a bioactive one, I guess over here most people have bioactive terrariums, artificial set up is frowned upon. Fot good reasons, it´s unnatural and not pretty to look at, and also the frogs surely prefer natural plants.

Great job! Looks beautiful. Here's a nice little tip; you can place a plastic ring that floats on the surface of the water during feedings. Use it to drop the fish food in so that the food doesn't go all over the place. The fish will come to the ring to feed. I'm currently creating an indoor pond myself. Using a very large and beautiful Chinese porcelain potter. Was wondering, how do you heat your indoor pond? Any advice will be appreciated.

I have a suggestion concerning the water dripping down the neck of the urn. Let the urn dry completely. In the area where water run/drips make water channel with hot glue. Let the Channel or spout hang lower than the lip of the urn. The flowing water hides the hot glue and the water will flow down the hot glue spout. If it doesn't work, hot glue is easy to remove from terracotta or ceramic.

Looking into these frogs, I have two separated crested geckos and it seems their care is very similar to them, I am undecided between red eyed tree frogs and whites, are there different levels of difficulty between the two types? : )

Wow... I am completely shocked. I am new to freshwater fish keeping, and had no idea any of this was happening. I guess I shouldn't be surprised - we've been doing these horrific things to terrestrial animals for hundreds of years, but those scenes from the fish farm were really hard to watch. And extremely important, for that reason. Thank you SO much for sharing all of this. I am disappointed that there are not many, many more people in the hobby discussing this. This was an incredibly sensitive, nuanced, and compassionate discussion of a difficult topic, and I am so grateful to you for posting this! You have saved me so much heartache... and I'm sure it's reached many others as well. Thank you again, and much love to you and your crew of critters 😺💕

It's good to hear you are keeping the type and amount of pets that's right for you. My first aquarium ten years ago was a heavily planted 125 with three common red and white goldfish, pretty much like you were describing.

Thank you very much for the logical explanation. I agree 100%. There was a point I wanted to breed English budgies for showing. I shortly realized that these birds can't fly or even perch was very sad to watch. Extremely unethical.

So “egg bodied,” fancy goldfish are not okay because they only exist for our enjoyment, but single-tailed ones are, even varieties of them, when they still were bred from the starting point of a Prussian carp for that same reason, to be a pet and be enjoyed? I get being discouraged by the health issues that crop up. I’m a goldfish keeper. It’s kind of a given. I get being bothered by certain breeds that take it more to the extremes in terms of care or breeding practices. But I couldn’t help but latch onto your “human enjoyment” argument and think “really, that’s what we’re going with here?”
