Why is there no film of Jimmy Greaves at Chelsea. As a Fulham FC supporter I would go to Chelsea every other week, and the greatest player I have ever seen was Greave’s , and that includes our own Johnny Haynes. Jimmy scored wonder goals at Chelsea, I do think he was better at Chelsea than he was at Spurs, for one he was faster at Chelsea.

I recall Ian Chappell saying this test match was the most boring cricket match he had ever played in, which was the catalyst for his decision to step down as captain.

Greig smashes Thommo through extra cover, and Benaud, measured as always, remarks on a ‘very firmly hit stroke’. Wonderful stuff, great to see Edrich putting one of his big innings together.

The match when the cricket establishment realized that the battle with WSC was lost. Nobody watching, no excitement, the Australian team bereft of star players & uncompetitive against a professional, but hardly stellar, England side playing steady, plodding cricket. The WSC Supertest final, played on the same ground a week earlier, attracted a much bigger crowd for its day/night match.

Damn, Brearley was just an awful batsman to watch, no shots, no authority in his strokeplay, just lunging forward with a big stride & dropping the bat on the ball.

My god what a dreadful series that turned out to be. 30 players used I think by England. It was a 6 Test series though. We’d won the 3 match Texaco ODIs leading up. And Border’s tourists were dismissed before a ball was bowled. Welcome to England Steve Waugh!

What made this a classic, apart from the atmosphere, was the characters throughout both teams. Derek Randall played like one of us, as did Botham. Gower, Gooch, Brearley and Boycott. I loved Alvin Kalicharran, but the others were sheer quality too. Those were the days! I was 14.

Watching this, you can see, clearly, that Brian Luckhurst wasn't getting in line against Thompson in particular. This tour ended a number of England careers. The shell shocked Brian Luckhurst included!

I was at this game but I remembered it as being a year or two after 67. So many legendary names on both sides. The crowd was about 95,000 - for a friendly. We were actually quite disappointed with a draw. In those days we expected to beat even the top English teams.

With modern bats people like Sir Donald, Jack Hobbs George Headley and a whole host of others would have had even better records. How many of these shots shown here would have gone for 4 or 6 with modern equipment.

shows how stupid the west indian later order batters were from murray downwards - all they had to do was a single to get viv back on strike. but brearley's catch ala kapil (83) - or was it the orther way around. and viv's catch off botham - insane - only he couldve done that

Was a great match. Richards & Clive Lloyd led the batting revival. Those were the days when the West Indies had without doubt the most effective speed bowling attack. Holding was such an athletic, rhythmic, fast bowler, Andy Roberts more precise & fast, Joel Garner quick with unusual action able to deceive the batsman in anticipating the delivery type because of his height. Formidable fast bowlers. Dominated both Test matches & one- day matches during that epoch.
