its very hard to to see how you butterfly coiled that rope. the out and back, out and back was quick. And with the video quality, it makes it nearly impossible to see how you did that. I've only ever seen butterfly down with ropes behind the neck and down on each side. Your method looked more compact, but unfortnately I could not replicate it

Nice video series. I wish I had found this sooner. I have a project where I'm working on a tall ladder and needed to learn about ropes, knots, harnesses, etc. It took several days watching hours of videos to piece together all the info that you've gathered here in one place.

Please demonstrate that butterfly slowly. People need to see that. Searching for butterfly coil returns a method used by climbers that is quite different.

Wow, I like it! There are many videos showing the wrap around your hand three times for making the Alpine Butterfly knot. Some show taking the middle wrap, top wrap, or taking the bottom wrap, then pulling it through the others; which one is correct. Very much I like yours best, easy-peasy lemon-squeezy.

Very appreciate the teacher trying to explain, still at his calculation, i would switch to Summer solistice sun set altitude angle instead of Winter solistice because summer is the time day is longest then we have more kW of peak-sun-hours. Starting point of calculation : top-right-hand-corner of solar array faces South (if Northern Hemisphere).

Quick correction at 5:40 or so: The statement was " one turn to the right and one turn to the left". In fact , both turns went in the SAME direction. If you do the two turns in opposite directions, the resulting knot sort of looks like a butterfly, but it's not as secure and could work loose.

Thanks Joe! I thought I had inserted some text at that point to show the correction. I'll go check to make sure I really did that. Cheers!

I love the way you explain things in your videos 😊 I am a 64 years young woman 😊 and I nearly fell off my roof whilst removing the hip high (I am 5’ 6” high), snow on my roof last winter. So, needless to say that this year, I bought the full body safety Harness and 6 foot internal Shock absorbing Safety Lanyard with double snap hooks on it to go on my back. I would like to know what type of rope do I need, because, I weigh 215 lbs and I’ll be up on a roof that is about 25 feet high x 30 feet deep x 60 feet large and with these dimensions on one side it will be tethered to my Pick-up on one side and to a big maple tree on the other side … what would be the best length? Thanks for taking the time to read this . Nicole

Thanks a lot for sharing this nice little trick! I've seen the general method that's used here a lot - even on Wikipedia, just without this neat usage of the thumb and index finger to keep the "loop on a loop" in place more easily. It's absolutely genius! One little thing I've noticed at 05:37 is that you're saying "one turn to the right [...] one turn to the left". You're twisting the rope in the same direction both times, therefore it results in a proper alpine butterfly. However, if you follow the verbal instructions and twist it in two different directions, it will result in a "false butterfly", which at the first glance looks pretty similar, but has very inferior properties.

Great solar orientation vid without an aide of an app.. I NEED a clarification though. The 'fudging' solution is - randomly pick any time of day, at AZIMUTH 0 and using the location's relative solar elevation on the chosen time, and using the location's latitude. Given these parameters in the Trig calculation I will get the same answer? Any help?

Because of the coming micronova, declination is moving much farther, and much faster and so declination information is likely incorrect My up-to-date declination is 30 degrees, 15 degrees off from the official declination for my area. but there is still a way to recalibrate magnetic declination using the shadow of sticks recording the path of the sun---rotation of the earth has not yet changed. First stick will show East. Mark it with a sharp stick pushed in. After a few minutes you can mark sun shadow travel where the shadow has moved - Push another stick in to mark West. Lay a straight stick from the E mark to the W mark. Geographic north or True North is 90 degrees from the E-W line. With your compass pointing toward True North, note how far off your compass is now. That is your true up-to-date declination. More on micronova in my 2nd book, Surviving the Micronova: This Train Is on the Tracks is available now.
