Do a video on the poly 318. I just learned about this motor and tomorrow I’m going to look at a rare one. It has stock dual 4 barrels and a 4 speed. A Chevy guy owns it and he don’t really know nothing about it. I think it’s a dodge polara or valiant or something. I’ll let yall know tomorrow.

This story is from a friend I have come to trust. He is the real version of an old boy scout. Wouldn't lie to save his mother. "My dad never mentioned the year of the car or the year it occurred but he told this story several times in exactly the same way so I'm certain it really happened. For the record, none of us should condone reckless driving but if ever you drive on highway 14 you will see that it really is a long straight stretch of road, the kind that invites a person to give those horses free rein. It would have been about 1963 as I associate it with a summer party just before school started that September for my grade 10. A guy named Bob Cherry knew my dad from associating at a tavern in Beloit. He worked in construction, heavy equipment and made good money. He loved big, powerful cars and he also loved wide open highways where he could turn them loose. He had a Big, black Chrysler, and my dad said that car could almost fly. Bob took him fishing a few times so my dad knew that car was fast. Bob loved to make it unwind. Highway 14 in Wisconsin has some long, straight open spaces with few cross roads beginning at Mazomanie and heading north west toward Richland Center. Bob was heading to Richland Center to visit friends. Somewhere after Mazomanie Bob heard that highway sound and he opened that Chrysler up. He was going so fast he didn't even see the county deputy sitting on a side road. The deputy was stunned to see a car going 100+. As fast as he could he got his car started and turned on the lights and siren. He took off after the big black car but it just kept getting farther away. There was no hope of catching the maniac speeder. There is a town called Gotham on a bend in the highway with signs indicating 45 mph (YES, there really is a town called Gotham but they pronounce it Gah thum) so Bob thought it wise to slow down in case of cross traffic. As he came into Gotham, he was down to 45 and saw a nice mom and pop restaurant so he turned in to get some food. He parked by the side of the restaurant and went in with no idea the deputy was after him. He ordered food and was calmly drinking coffee when the deputy went flying through with lights flashing and siren blaring. The waitress brought his food and a few minutes later the deputy came in and asked, "Who owns that big black Chrysler out there?" Bob waved him over. The deputy walked right up to him and said, "The way you were flying up that road, I want to see your pilots license." So Bob took out his wallet and showed him his single engine pilots license. The deputy blew a fuse and began ranting about maniacs and wrote Bob a bunch of tickets before stomping out. The people in the restaurant were stunned. Bob calmly asked how many would be willing to show up for his day in court and wrote down their names. The day in court the deputy spoke first and gave the judge the details, referring to Bob as a lunatic and a hazard to the public. Bob then told the judge, "I was eating a meal at the restaurant when the deputy came in and accused me of reckless driving. There are four people here who will witness to that fact. The deputy asked to see my pilots license and then got so mad I thought it wise not to argue with him, just wait for my day in court". The judge looked at the deputy and asked, "Did you really ask to see his pilots license?" Deputy hung his head, "Yes your honor." "Did he show you a pilots license as requested?" "Yes your honor. But, but, you should have seen how that car was flying that's why I asked for pilots license. Why that car was so fast it went completely out of sight." Judge -"So you lost sight of the car?" Deputy - "Yes your honor." Judge - "How did you happen to stop at the restaurant and confront Mr. Cherry?" Deputy- "That big black car was parked right out front of the restaurant, I saw it when I went through Gotham and turned back. A car like that is expensive, there ain't no one around here can afford one, it had to be the same car." Judge- "So the car was parked out front, in plain sight, not hidden, and Mr. Cherry had a meal in front of him. Do you know what an embarrassment this would be if Mr. Cherry had come here with a lawyer? Deputy, I order you to meet me after court in my chambers. Mr. Cherry you are free to go, all charges dismissed."

They didn't start calling them Max wedge engines until sometime in the 80s. I have a question: were there street versions of the cross ram 426 cars made? I was going to the races in 63 & early 64 when these cars were racing and the only ones I saw were 2 door post cars, heater delete, battery in trunk. Some had aluminum front ends & bumpers. Lately I have seen 2 door hardtops with heater & battery in front. Are these cars clones or fake cross ram cars? Also they idle rather tame & I remember the race cars had a rather erratic "cammed up" sound. Latest one I saw was at a car show in Tulsa. It was a white Polara 500 2 door hardtop, high level interior trim, heater, battery in front, and the 63 style exhaust manifolds. I was unaware that they made such.

Anyone could order one in the dealer But they didn’t make one with a smaller cam or less than 11.0:1 compression. So really no street version like the Hemi but a few drove them on the street instead of making them into track cars.. Even the Hemi street version wasn’t given the cross ram. Yes, there are many clone cars out there. Some of them use 440s.

Back in the early 80s here in Nebraska, a guy showed up a all the derbys in nearby cou ty fairs all summer with a car that looked so beat up compared to others that hadn't been in any derbys yet. The skin of the whole car was so tattered, looked like a 20 year old t-shirt ready to be used as rags, painted yellow with 80 in black on it. Randy F?something. He won that derby at the Seward county fair too. The body going in had obviously been in one or several derbys before, but it maintained the same shape through several heats, while some station wagons would end up looking like a big "V"😂😂😂 The guys that wouldn't hold back at all, the ass end of those station wagons were pointed up at a 45 degree angle by the end. But the yellow car was an Imperial, apparently before the ban, at least around here. He took it to many derbys that summer, where most cars were trash after 1. My dad explained the perimeter frame and the car also having an x-frame inside that. He knew right away why that Imperial didn't look any different afyer several heats, while other cars were all bent out of shape and could hardly move due to that even if still ran. That always stuck with me, when the ban started, no one around here was shocked, for a few years Randy would set up an Imperial, and ran it the whole summer at many derbys

Why is the 64 GTO considered the first muscle car, and not this?
@ultimatemusclecar
@ultimatemusclecar Ай бұрын
I agree with you. I think it's because the '64 GTO was a street car and the Max Wedge engines weren't really street cars even though anybody can order one and drive it on the street. They did have 11.0 or 13.5 compression ratios and required 102 octane or more. That may be the reason why.

Great video! I special ordered a 70 GT, only options the 6 pack and wood steering wheel, When it was delivered it had the full cloth bench seat, and the dealer claimed it had a "showroom" paint job. When it came off the truck someone on the assembly line had put "Go get em" in soap{?} on the inside of the rear window. It was blue inside and out, with the white GT stripe, which was reflective. It also had the limited slip differential and 3.23 gear. The entire rear housing was replaced under warranty because of a bad weld that leaked grease , so I had a 3.55 gear installed when the housing was swapped. I still have the 3.23 ring and pinion.
