Some wonderful memories from my youth in the 1960s and 1970s when I spent almost every weekend underground - pre wetsuit and SRT days too 😀 I'm probably one of the few remaining cavers who laddered Gaping Ghyll. And not once, but three times 🤣 We were idiots in those days... A hard days caving pushing "Far Country" followed by a hard night in the pub consuming excess alcohol before doing it all again the next day - bliss ❤️

Those were nice challenges. Life is a succession of stories that filled your time nicely when you dare following your dreams. Btw, I would love to have a scan or file of that old map, would you mind to share it please ? I leave in Saudi Arabia near Thuwal. Thank you.

In the previous video, I asked whether there was any evidence for homing pigeons in the archaeological record, and in this video you discuss the vented recesses in the barn at Newby Cote, which in my mind may indeed be a dovecote and just the evidence I was inquiring about.

p.s. You mention the evidence for farm animals. I'm interested to learn if there's any evidence for dovecotes or carrier pigeons in the medieval period. I understand that the owning & breeding of pigeons during the Norman period was subject to *manorial monopoly*, and so I have assumed that the rearing of pigeons may have been more to do with long distance communication, which was necessarily controlled by the lords rather than the masses rather than dietary discretion. Carrier pigeon communication had been well-established elsewhere in Europe and the Middle East for millennia, and so I've always been interested to learn if it was suppressed or contained by the nobility for political reasons, just as some might want to do today with the Internet.

You mention that the coins found at Gauber High Pasture were dated to the 850s. The more relevant question it would seem to me is dating when those coins were nominally taken out of circulation by an incoming monarch versus the date that they were minted. The Great Heathen Army started their foray throughout England in 865, and it appears that they've been recorded as over-wintering in England over the ensuing 10 years or so on more than one occasion. Its been suggested that the layout of the main house at Gauber High Pasture could accommodate a sleeping complement of people that compares favorably with the crew of a decent-sized longboat. The fact that the outer buildings seemed to be both a smithy and a bake house would seem to concur with the notion that there was a large complement of people to feed as well as to house, and to provide the means for a winters worth of work to repair and smelt weapons. This is not to say that the original building on that site could not have been meant for shepherds tending their flock or for monks on sabbatical leave, but the stalwartness of the walls does lead one to think that the building may have at some point upgraded in size, and for defensibility, if only for one winter.

Have you given any consideration that Ingleborough might also have served as an observation and signal-beacon site to warn of troop movements, in Roman times as well as earlier and later times, particularly given its proximity to the Roman road between Ingleton and Virosidum near Bainbridge and that the Romans were renown for their series of signal stations along their roads

While watching this tutorial it dawned on me why I'm having trouble not coloring everything in. After 40 years of production work impressionism wasn't allowed and every detail of the job needed to be completed. Hopefully I can break the chains of my working youth, artistically speaking..

I am a (French) beginner and I am blown away by your work. You are very inspiring. I know the Yorkshire Dales quite well (precisely Harrogate and its surroundings) and your interpretration of the picture is extremely poetic. I would say that the colours on the picture are gaudy. I would have not chosen this time of the day to take this picture ! Luckily you really embellished it ! Thanks for your explanations.

Dear Mr. Harrison. These 3 parts video was so informative, useful and I learnt a lot. Thank you very much. The painting or the line & wash output is very beautiful. after the paint dried, I could see the minor details very clearly. Excellent tutorials. I had one question - How do we select a subject or reference photo for a line & wash ? Thank you...

So enjoying this presentation Mark - love the detail but so sad that I am watching and not there taking part! Was there any female interest in joining this expedition - I would certainly hope so though I might think otherwise. Would have been nice if there were days that others could have joined, just for the day perhaps, as part of the experience. I should imagine it would have been a huge problem dealing with stragglers who might imagine they could cope with the daily grind but fail miserable leaving you to pick up the pieces and delay the whole process!

I planted 45 nut tree saplings, chestnut and walnut and cobnut next to an old coal mine, I thought it would also help feed the local village and slightly lessen the need of buying and shipping food, hence reducing carbon footprint and offering a long term sustainable supply of seasonal nuts and increasing the real wealth of an economically deprived area. I intend to go back next year to plant Pear, apple, plum and cherry trees. I think "Community Orchards" are a good idea, but not everywhere does them. Leeds city council support community orchards
