My understanding about why we're not supposed to talk about skinwalkers/wendigo is because they stand in for white settlers, and we've already done enough damage: What does the skinwalker do? It infiltrates a tribal community pretending to be a trusted medicine man, while actually bringing perverse ideas and in some variations killing people, destroying the Navajo way if life from within. They are associated with the Ute people because they were cursed by the Navajo centuries ago. What did western colonists do? They infiltrated the Navajo's lives, often under the guise of being a trusted community member like a priest. In reality, they brought slavery and death to the land, and drove the Navajo further out west, destroying their former way of life. The Ute people worked with white settlers because the Ute were willing to capture Navajo people and sell them into slavery centuries ago. What does the wendigo do? It can possess anybody who becomes not just hungry but greedy, preying upon the most desperate times when the Cree and Ojibwa were low on food, isolated in the dead of winter. It was important to rely on your tribal neighbors, your elders, and feed all the strangers you meet, because the wendigo could take over an entire village should one person decide that they would rather do the easy thing - being selfish and with each gruesome murder losing touch with their humanity more and more. What did northern settlers do? They took any land that they could find, preying upon isolated native groups until the only places they could live freely were the most remote, coldest and low on resources. When your neighbors and elders have died from disease, exhaustion, or desperately trying to defend your land, it would be very easy to try befriending white settlers - who are still greedy, bloodthirsty, and take away your culture piece by piece. Soon enough, you're no different from them.

Im Joe this is my wife's account it's on my tablet but anyway: I grew up against the wilderness of WV and we live way back in the wilderness now and I've never heard this crap sorry. Nobody in the WV part of Appalachia is going to ignore a cry for help just like a few weeks ago when a guy found a missing girl in the woods. There are no special rules except be respectful and don't trespass! As a rule if someone calls your name we're gonna go see who it is we don't ignore nothing that's just nuts. I feel sorry for any monsters that would wander into our woods....maybe that's why I've never seen or heard anything and sometimes I spend hours in the woods at night. I'm the scariest thing in the woods if I catch you on my land man or monste don't matter to me...

Wow. Having a "wake" and realizing the reason it's called that. There is a very disturbing coffin story that the one side of the family tries to keep it hush, hush. I heard the "story" when I was little BUT I believe it and especially where I'm from, born and raised here in Appalachia, and too much stuff happens right around here, and I believe it because well, no one could just make the story up. Stephen King would even get goosebumps.

I remember as a young girl, my cousins and I played the Ouija "board game" like it was a normal part of all the other games we played. I remember having a bad feeling about it every time, but never understanding why because we thought it was only a "normal" game. Chris, we also did seances but did not take it seriously because we never really knew that is wasn't just a game. Wow! So many of us grew up that way. Thanks for all you do. I enjoy every video.

Finally ! A response rooted in realism. Although I believe there is definately something in those woods....I am more concerned with the kids going to school in December in tank tops and duct tape holding their shoes together. I would LOVE a Paranormal investigation with John AND also the ghost brothers together. I would probably become a ghost from dying of laughter. All the personalities of you all mesh so well together and I think it would be PERFECT!🤣👻🖤 -GhosteGirlLexii

Omg. Listening to John talk about legends had me dying. Because I grew up with very religious godparents that came from Mexico and I (who learned Spanish just enough to know what they would tell or better yet, yell at me. Lmfao) spent more time with them and my godsisters and cousins more than I did at home and we would be told that if we didn’t listen and go to sleep that El Cucuy would come and get us. We would be so scared and they would make us turn the tv and lights off because we don’t pay the bills so it is NOT going to be on all night. 😅 Needless to say, we had all seen a shadow one night and all four of us screamed bloody murder and my godmother came running in “what? What?” And with tears streaming down our faces we told her there was a shadow in the closet. My godmother said “Now see? You don’t listen! I told you kids that El Cucuy was gonna come for you. Now be quiet and go to bed!” She shut the door and we all stayed awake all night, in the dark under our blankets. Refusing to sleep but refusing to look. I’m a 30yr old mom and wife who is still unable to sleep without the tv or a little light on. Lmfao. I love spooky stuff (the real stuff not the stuff Hollywood tries to make us be afraid of.) 😅 I love this and all the content! -GhosteGirlLexii

There's a lot of talk about supernatural shit in the Appalachians, but I've lived near them all my life and I'm very confident that Cthulu or whatever doesn't kill people with anywhere near the precision and enthusiasm that hunger and cold will. The elements are your biggest opp there, the main threat from thinking creatures is from chemical companies that think you need to be drinking more Teflon and coal mine owners (I have not forgiven you Don Blankenship)
