I think the fact that fanfiction is associated with teenage girls probably does play a part in the reason why it gets made fun of so much. However, I don't think your argument is very good. Your comparison doesn't really work. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juilet isn't thought of as fan fiction by most people; I didn't realize it was based off of a previous work and I don't think that's common knowledge. More importantly, Romeo and Juilet was written 400 years ago, while Anna Todd started publishing on Wattpad 11 years ago. Every work from 400 years ago that you or I have read is already well regarded. If it wasn't well regarded, no one aside from literary historians would have ever even heard of it. It would make much more sense to compare Anna Todd to modern male fanfiction authors. Is their work recieved more positively than their female counterparts? I'd honestly be interested to know.

While , you have valid points, i think you are forgetting the time periods of the artists you named , in Shakespeare's time playwrights were in demand there wasn't as much entertainment to consume and since it was tye upper class that mostly patroned the arts its easy to get your name out their if someone with enough standing and influence sang your praises. While women couldn't be a playwright at the time , if one was allowed to and had a royal or someone in court to sing her praises, we would have women on par with Shakespeare. In today's climate their aren't as many readers or people who frequent plays. And since we have so much to look at if we do its hard to build up the fan base that Shakespeare had because his name was talked about by the influential, we don't really have the same systems in place. I tell everyone to read Kim Harrison's Dead witch walking and the series it starts ,but she probably will not be as famous as Shakespeare not because she is a woman but because they're are thousands of authors out there plenty of competition, Shakespeare didn't have as much competition
