Hi, I have heard that to become a permanent resident there you need to have several vaccinations. Is that also the case for just having the digital nomad residency permit which can be renewed? Thanks
@UruguayXXIGUB

Hello! To apply for your digital nomad permit, there is no need for a vaccination certificate. If you wish to renew your permit for a further six months, then you will need proof of a clean criminal record and a vaccination certificated issued in Uruguay: www.liveinuruguay.uy/digitalnomadpermit Please feel free to contact [email protected] for further information. What are the costs from healthcare for seniors? In many countries there's an age limit on new healthcare applications. Typically you can't get insurance if you're older than 65.

Uruguay is one of a few countries in the world , that you never going to get Uruguayan nationality regardless the time you lived in the country or even if are married or have an Uruguayan born child . If you decide to live permanently in the country you have to take that into account ver seriously . You can lose your own nationality for acquitting a long term permit called “ciudadanía legal” ( is a specific type of citizenship that can lead you to lose your citizenship/ nationality, but you never will get Uruguayan nationality ). Once you have “ciudadanía legal” they will issue an Uruguayan passport as foreigner . This passport with a foreigner nationality it’s not recognize for most countries and they will ask you for a visa . More sad part is that some countries refuse to stamp you a visa on an Uruguayan passport while you’re not Uruguayan . Government and agencies know exactly the problem but is a kind of xenophobia , only pure Uruguayan born blood deserves to be Uruguayan according to laws

So how the heck does that work for timing? I've read it takes up to 20 business days to be accepted but you only have 1 day before paying? Can you be accepted without paying it? I'm confused on the last part which seems like you must do the whole application while you're already in Uruguay?

Hello Nicole. The visa is an independent document. Please note that the Digital Nomad Permit does not account for a visa. If you or any family members need a visa to enter the country, you will need to start this process first. Please feel free to contact [email protected] for more information. I would just like to write about my experience with the digital nomad visa because hopefully it will help someone else down the line. Yes, the application and payment process is easy. What comes after is not. I don't know who told whom you'll get it in 10 days because you absolutely do not. I received mine 14 days -- yes, FOURTEEN DAYS -- before the expiration of my nomad visa. No matter how many times you phone, you will get nowhere. They either won't answer or your queries will be dismissed. Anyway, this means that I don't have enough time to renew the visa because I can't get an appointment to get the cebula (identity card). You need a cebula, you ask? Yes, apparently. I didn't know about this either because the only thing anyone ever mentions in these videos and blog posts is the permit that will be e-mailed to you. No one ever talks about this cebula you'll need. The e-mail in question doesn't mention the cebula either. Your permit will, though, which will come as quite a surprise to you. But you need it to renew the nomad visa and you need an appointment to get it... Good luck getting that appointment. You definitely won't 14 days before your nomad visa expires. So, now I'm all out of luck. I'll have to leave the country, digital nomad permit in hand, and hope that they understand what it's for and that I didn't "overstay" on my visitor's visa. So, my recommendation is: if you want to do this and you haven't received it in 10 days, then you absolutely need to start contacting people who aren't part of the government. Try Live In Uruguay, hopefully they can help you. If you want to renew it, make sure you get everything well in order before your 180 days are up. Your stuff needs to be translated by public translators. Good luck getting a response out of them, only one bothered to respond to my queries. Depending on where you're from in the world, this translation won't be cheap either. The only nice thing is that you can get vaccinated for free. I hope this helps someone else down the line and saves them from the horrendous stress I've experienced because of this digital nomad visa. If it worked the way it's advertised, it would be great. But you absolutely need to be aware that, at this point in time, it doesn't.

Sadly, I found on looking into the requirements for entry from the USA that, though no entry visa is required, there are a number of other certifications of a formal nature almost all of which have costs. Translation of documents into Spanish by a certified person is one example. Vaccination records are another. The video above is well done and is encouraging for "digital nomads", but for a retiree directed towards living in Uruguay linguistic problem for someone who does not speak or read Spanish would be formidable. There is no mention of it in the video. Such an obvious omission points to the formidability.

Super helpful video - thanks for filming it! For either Karen or anyone else: When renewing the digital nomad visa, a criminal background check is required. The government website says that the background check must be from a national entity. Does anyone know what that would mean for the US (for example, the FBI appears to offer Identity History Summary Checks, aka "Rap Sheets")?

Thanks@@UruguayXXIGUB ! I've done a bit more research and as the Uruguayan authorities are seeking a national criminal check, at least here in the US a local/state inquiry won't suffice and it will need to be done by the FBI as a national agency. Thanks again!

Great videos Karen, I appreciate the informative nature of the interviews. Chris provided good insight into different aspects of living in Uruguay. My partner & I are looking into making a trip to do more research about the country. Wondering if you and/or Chris would be so kind as to recommend a good air B & B for a week stay? Also, what are the top 3 cities in Uruguay that are the most livable? In terms of cost of living, natural beauty (eg. being close to the ocean), work opportunities. Any other information you think might be helpful would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

Hello everyone, I would just like to add some information after my experience with the digital nomad application process. First off, it is a very easy application process but there are a few things that can cause some confusion and anxiety. I've seen everyone say you will receive your certificate within 10 days, but you don't. It took 2 months for me to receive mine. I'm not sure if 10 days was how it was initially, but it's no longer as quick as that. Also, you need to be aware of how the Uruguayan government counts the 180 days. When you do the application, you will see there's a "from date:" option. You might think they count from this date, but in my experience they will count the 180 days from the day you pay for the application. Make sure your 180 days will be counted from then. Therefore, I absolutely wouldn't recommend getting to Uruguay and doing the application immediately because your 180 days will then lap over your initial 90 days. Do the application near the end of your initial 90 days so that your extra 180 days are counted separately. I hope this helps anyone else and that you enjoy your time in Uruguay. It's a lovely country.

Thanks for the amazing information! A few things are not clear however... I'd appreciate some more clarity since I haven't found answers anywhere on the internet. 1. If I apply online and have someone help in paying the fee locally, will the granted DN visa allow me to enter Uruguay or do I still need to get a tourist visa? 2. Will the DN visa allow me to sign documents such as a rent lease, opening a bank account, and other administrative things like any other resident? Or is it just like a tourist visa but with a longer stay period? 4. If I apply today, will the granted DN visa period of 180 days begin immediately or starting a chosen date that I pick in the future? Thank you!
