Thank you John William for making this and thank you Mr. Woo for showing and explaining about these great cameras. Mr. Woo reminds me of the Dali Lama with that little laugh he does now and then. Such a gentle soul. Best wishes Jake Everyman.

I would not say that the Japanese Camera makers gave up ! They just saw the coming future for SLR Cameras ! We know that it did not went well for Leitz/Leica with SLR Cameras, the Leicaflex, Leicaflex SL and Leicaflex SL2 was too expensive for the Germans to produce, When Leica then tried with the Leica R3, they made a big mistake by making their own electronic in the Cameras, they should have used the same as in Minolta, the goes for the Leica R4 ! I have always wondered why Leica did not back in the 1970´s and 1980´s made Leica Lenses for other Camera brands mounts, so I will say the Japanese won ! Now Leica have made the L-mount system, but I think that is many decades too late ! Many former users of Leica R cameras, they use other brands today.

A few years ago I acquired the very camera, a Leica M8 and 90mm F2 APO owned by the famous French actress Audrey Tautou; Amelie, A Very Long Engagement, which was given to her by French director Jean Pierre Jeunet who directed both those films and the short film/advert Chanel directed by Jean and starring Audrey and briefly, but poignantly the Leica M8 and 90mm F2 APO. What I do know is that Jean chose this particular camera to feature in the film as there are no markings on the front of the lens, only on the top of the hood, and they concealed the 'M8' logo with a small block of plastic all done to 'not to distract from the beauty of Audrey' !! I still have it, no idea if its worth any more than a normal M8 and lens and wondered if someone might know - based in UK - it has the charger complete with French/Euro plug battery charger - the ding on the lens - carefully concealed in the shots in which it is used but absolutley zero provenance!!!!!

Regarding the first Sekonic meter. It was originally known as the Norwood Director. Sekonic bought the company,i thonk, and made it their own. Many Movies were shot using that meter. Gossen made a color meter called the Sixtie meter. They are easily available for sale and are suprisingly inexpensive. Probably because nobody understands whst they do. Thanks, Mr. WOO! And you too, John for bringing him to us.

I have had several Light Meters, fx the Sekonic L-448 Studio-Auto II, but it was 1.5 EV off the correct metering, so I returned it. The Quantum Calcu-Light are very precise for metering, but not well made, though they always function as long as the batteriers have juice, get the later versions. The Gossen Variosix F2 are an excellent Light Meter, I will highly recommend Gossen with digital reading. Recently I discovered that ALL of my old Weston Master and Weston Euro-Master Light Meters have died, the have been in a dry cabinet, so it is only age that have killed them, Weston Light Meters are precise, but very vulnerable.

I agree, Nikons will last forever if you look after them. My wedding present from my father was a Nikon FE, already many years old when I got it, and two outstanding Carl Zeiss lenses. We just celebrated our 20th anniversary and the FE is going as strong as the day I got it. I guess it'll last me into retirement. I disagree with the last statement "not like cameras these days" as when our first daughter was born, we got a Nikon D70, which we still use weekly, has travelled the world with us from all over Europe, to Africa, and back. We use it in the harshest conditions, including in the tropical rain forests, and it does not die. Its only "drawbacks" compared to modern DSLRs are peripheral - like the memory card, or "only" having 6 Megapixels, which frankly, gives more detail than a good ISO 100 film anyway, and lower resolution images "weigh" less, so are quicker and easier to manipulate. I just hope that my kids and future grandchildren get to enjoy and learn using these wonderful tools, like I have done.

I love the discussion on Leica and Nikon's competition in the 1950s and 1960s, how both companies ended up dominating their sectors of the market, while respecting the other's "turf". Fascinating. Mr Wu certainly knows his field.

I worked in a camera shop in the early 80s and the Vivitar series 1 lenses were superb. They no longer made the individual mounts by then , however Tamron had the “adaptall “ system which was similar. I was selling OM10s and MEsupers mainly but also the occasional indestructible F3. I was there at the start of auto focus in a time when Minolta were leading the field. I moved on to a more profitable career but carried on taking photos and in a way wish I had dedicated my life to it like Mr Woo. ❤

I loved the Olympus film cameras. The OTF exposure system is what sold me on the camera back in the 80s and 90s. I currently have an OM-2S, OM-2n and an OM-4T. The compactness was another selling point. What I liked about the OTF exposure system was for flash photography, especially for macro and ultra macro (I had the auto bellows too for 2x plus magnification). Without OTF macro flash photography would have been a lot more difficult - OTF made it so easy! I was disappointed with the post-Maitani Olympus in the digital age. They forced the micro 4/3 system on us without making a full frame line as well. They could have taken an OM film body design, remove the film transport sections and add digital technology for not much more bulk than the current M4/3 system. I think Olympus made a big mistake which is why they had to be sold and now sell under the OM System brand. Olympus would have still been Olympus if they made a compact full frame line as well.

Man that F2 looks absolutely mint! Mine is at the opposite end of the spectrum, was my grandfather's press camera (one of them anyway, he had at least two Fs and an F3 as well) and half of the black paint has been brassed off! Yet, despite thousands upon thousands of rolls put through it and having been stuffed in a bag for about 30 years, it still works almost perfectly. Fresh light seals and a little CL to get back the slow speeds is all it needs.

I have a hasselblad 500 body. I am thinking of buying the 100 digital back. Does this combination get me a 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 image or does it get something less than 2 1/4 ? I realize comparing digital to analog image size is not exactly equal. I wonder if I would get a better image and image size with just using film ? Thanks !

I dont need another camera, I shoot sports for a living and have an office filled with bodies and lenses and long glass 200 f2, 400 2.8 , 2 500's f4's, and a 600 4..... and just never want to use them for anything other than work. The 907/100 I want (I have a 501CM from way back in my studio days) but I cant help to think back to all my favorite personal / fun images and 90% are in poor weather and not always with the ideal tripod. I want slow, I dig the vintage vibe but lack of weather sealing, ibis, and a pop up/folding hood for the screen keep me from pulling the trigger. could probably go without the IBIS with a camera I hold firmly to my face but shooting with just my hands looking down into the screen seems like its going to cost me a stop or two of steadiness. this one has me torn

I still use one today: Nikon F2S from 1974, and I purchased my 1st Nikon F in 1971. Both are built for more than 50 years in use.

Back in the late 1960s, when I worked for a newspaper, I used a Nikon F with non-metered prism with no motor drive. In 1971, I replaced my two Nikon F SLR cameras with two F2 bodies with motor drives, and non-metered prism. Later, I used the F3 for auto exposure with the built-in light meter. Lastly, I used the F4 for shooting auto focus lenses with built-in motor drive and built-in auto exposure light meter. I no longer own or use the Nikon F or F3. However, I still shoot with the F2 and F4. To this day, the F2 remains my favorite 35mm SLR.
