Ok, so I just watched the whole trench run and hear me out. Right before Millenium Falcon destroys one of TIE fighters escorting Vader, Vader says "I have you know" and launches blaster salvo that obviously misses Luke, but I think it went straight into Death Star's exhaust port and damaged internal structure allowing Luke's proton torpedoes to finish the job. So while it's canon that Luke destroyed the Death Star, what Barnett said was also true, from a certain point of view.
