Two things. One the goats will chew right through chicken wire. You have to use a higher gauge hardware cloth. Two, it's not a great idea to staple or nail into a tree for a variety of reasons. It is not good for the tree and also those Staples and nails are eventually going to fall out and end in the tires of your side by side or lawn mower

A great story. My Great Grandfather was the inventor of Root Beer. Hires was the first root beer in the world. He was a food chemist by trade and a strict prohibitionist, so he also invented many alcohol-free flavorings. Most famous of his flavorings was the first-ever, imitation, vanilla extract that did not turn toxic when heated. At first if you used imitation vanilla in a cake, for example, it turned poisonous. After all his commitment to alcohol-free we, as a family have gone full-circle. To his likely chagrin, his great-grandson, a missionary, no less, now makes the real thing and gives it as gifts to supporters. I still feel a bit guilty when buying vodka. It just feels wrong for this person who has never had hard liquor. I age my extract for two years, but then too I make it in 5-ounce bottles. By the way, did you know that vanilla originated here in Mexico? So in the interest of historicity, I only use vanilla beans from Mexico. That puts my nose in the air with my superiority.

At the beginning of the year I thought I'd experiment with this very thing for the first time. I am also waiting for the 1 year mark to use them, so it won't be much longer. I went down a rabbit hole so I ended up making extract with full size bottles of bourbon, brandy, vodka, and white rum. I still want to make vanilla extract with spiced rum. I'll be set for quite some time. When you finish an extract do you reuse your beans to make more extract or for something else? Also, do you add more beans and/or alcohol as you use the extract? I've heard of this but I assume it would change the flavor a bit. It's always a joy to see what you two have to share. Blessings to you both.
@RenewedHomestead
@RenewedHomestead 3 күн бұрын
Hi manologal! Hope you are well. You are set with vanilla which is wonderful! You will never want to go back to store bought. I don’t reuse as the beans are spent after being in the alcohol for that long. I don’t add any during the process as I would think that would mess with the flavor profile. I know people who do add more beans and keeping adding to it. If you do, let me know how it turns out. I hate that I have to purchase vanilla now, but next year I will have plenty of vanilla. It makes a great gift as well. Thanks for your kindness. We appreciate you. 😊🙏

@@RenewedHomestead Nice visit but a ways from me. Also after husband grew up in a log cabin that’s over 175+ years old, not so awestruck by construction of them. My father in law moved the log cabin in late 70’s to current location from about 25 miles away. As story goes, the roof had to be cut off mid transport since couldn’t get it under one of the electric wires on road plus cabin was cut down middle to fit on two different 18 wheeler flat beds. Things not built like that now.

Wow! That is incredible. Whenever we see old log homes and barns falling down it hurts our hearts a little. We think of all the labor that went into those homes and barns and to see them deteriorating is sad. Our home was an 1860’s log cabin. They got the second story off with a chainsaw, added on, and then wrapped it in brick. I would prefer the cabin. 😂 We will hopefully, be able to start work on the outside of the house soon.

@RenewedHomestead
@RenewedHomestead 5 күн бұрын
Hi, how are you planting the comfrey root? I can email you the instructions we send out if you want. The main thing is to not use a soil that is too rich like MiracleGro and to keep the soil most until you see the plant come up, then you don't need to worry about keeping it moist. We recommend placing mulch on top to help keep the moisture in.

One of my white Leghorns is laying soft, rubbery eggs. I was thinking it might have been due to too much protein since they're on 18% layer pellets and I also feed them back their eggs 3 days out of the week. Maybe when they concentrate on the eggs they're not eating enough pellets? I'll check the vitamin d as well.

I’m new to the idea and process of silvopasture; can you please tell me more about how the animals creating the terracing happens? We bought sloped property and have huge boulders to contend with in addition to all the other homesteading challenges, and I’d really like to know more about how all these things work together! Thanks for this video, and I look forward to your response!
@RenewedHomestead
@RenewedHomestead 7 күн бұрын
Hi offgridhomesteadmaine! The animals will essentially make deer trails. They will traverse certain paths along the mountain and the trails will create small terraces if that makes sense. Cows do this fairly quickly because of their weight, sheep and goats will help develop it slowly but they will help with it. If you ever see a hillside with cows pay close attention to that hillside and you will see terracing from the cows. You can really see evidence of this better in fall and winter. Thanks for the great question. 😊
