Learned most of it from Varg's "burzum live" video for key to the gate. Harmonic melodies at the end are made by combining tracks playing root, 5's, octaves and maybe one more interval (can't really remember how many harmony tracks I recorded, 3 or 4) All in all not too complicated

This group are truly master musicians. As good as they sound live their studio version with the trumps and saxophone are better, if this is even possible. These are all their own songs and is not recycled 50's and 60's surf music. Some of the riffs in these songs are absolutely beautiful. It is amazing how the people of Croatia found a love for surf rock and took it to a much more advanced level than the Americans who created this genre of music.

@@colddarkness1798 If you think a poorly harmonized songs with mistakes are written by genius that means your hearing is a cold joke. Varg has some good moments, i like some of his tracks, especially from first and second album but calling him genius you insult all composers who knows music theory well.
@sensoriumpsychodelica6142 жыл бұрын
@Jacob Brodnansky I won't agree. Sorry about my English, it's not my native language and I have no time to check with translator. "Mistakes" must be correctly done too. I love disharmonized and chromatic tracks. Try Pink Floyd's Interstellar Overdrive ('67 17min version or '66 15min ver), Saucerful of Secrets (album ver. or 20min live - it's only one on YT), or Syd Barrett's - Rhamadan. It could be boring when you prefer metal but there's quintessence of correct disharmony. Giant Steps is also good example. If you want metal: Vektor - Black Future (full album). And then try The Shaggs - My Pal Foot Foot xDDD When you want break the rules, first you must know how to do it correctly. Without knowledge track will sound completely terrible as my English or The Shaggs Varg had some skills but not enough to do satisfying disharmony. Det Som Engang Var (track) that i used to love is best example of "let's riff not harmonized tritone, because it makes darkness"... Don't mind me saying that but today I think this sounds terrible (still wanna cover this track, seriously). I think Key to the Gate is his one of the best tracks in his music history. I returns to this song sometimes

@@sensoriumpsychodelica614 Your knowledge in the field of music is unquestioned, however you have to realize that Varg doesn't write songs to be according to western music theory, he writes them according to his own theory which is his emotion put into the strings. When 12-tone and chromatic composers came to the scene who obeyed their own ideas, they were widely overlooked and disregarded by scholars, today these people are mostly looked at as geniuses of their time by those same scholars. What Varg did is completely flipped the table, he doesn't obey to traditional song structure, traditional harmony, he doesn't look at a book that states which chords he can play in which key and what harmonies are pleasant to the ear. Everything he did, he did because he felt it and that in my opinion is as true as art can get. If you were to watch a Bob Ross tutorial and then proceed to copy all of his techniques with which you can replicate one of his paintings more or less, does that really make you an artist, an innovator? Why should it be any different in music? Why don't we all just study and copy Bach because he didn't make "mistakes". What Varg did in the world of metal and songwriting cannot be understated, he innovated and probably more importantly, he inspired people to become musicians and songwriters. When I hear out of key chords and strange harmonies in black metal, that for me is what gives it it's essence and atmosphere, a mix of light and darkness, almost like how the world we live in functions... mostly darkness here though.
