and there is some video of you showing how you mix the retarder ? you mixed into the primary colors or you add after?
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 10 сағат бұрын
I haven't made that video....yet! You can do either but for me It makes sense to mix it into the colors when you first squeeze them out onto the palette. When using retarder you have to be careful not to put too much in because the paint can dry tacky, I think they recommend 30% or less. If that sounds like a pain there are slow drying mediums that you can add in any amount. For example, Liquitex has "Slow-dri" acrylic gel and fluid mediums.

When I clean off the brush that has soft bristles, I use a dry rag to wipe off the excess paint. When the bristles get wet the tend to clump together and I'm trying to avoid that.

Good question! I tend to think of it as purple. There's probably a bias to it but it's a decent purple to start with.

i mean is if you use Medium W mediumis do you need to used another medium like linseed oil or safflower oil to increase the flow sorry English is not my primary language
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 9 сағат бұрын
Once you add the Medium W, it works just water mixable oils. So for the first layer I would add water to increase the flow ans so that it dries faster. I only add oil or painting medium when I add additional layers, to follow the fat over lean principle.You would want to use water mixable linseed oil instead of regular linseed oil.

I learned a lot about red and blue if you want a great purple you mix magenta and blue it makes more of a purple than red but red still can make purple though if you mix it with blue it just depends on what type of red if the red has more magenta in it like cool red it would make purple but if it has more yellow in it like an orangey warm red it would make more of a brownish or gray purple than pure red and blue naturally makes a dark purple not that bad sometimes a bit more purple but not as vibrant but still kind of a purple magenta and blue marks bright purple so yeah it all just depends

Thank you so much. How do you chose the right floater frame with the risers?
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 14 күн бұрын
If you're asking about the risers then I assume that you're framing a flat panel so look for the floaterframe that says it fits flat and cradled panels up to 7/8" deep (which is what I used in this video). The deeper floater frames are for thicker canvases and panels. There's the thin edge and thick edge, I like the thin but that's just my preference! 🙂 The Ampersand website lists all of the different styles and colors.

Hello I'm sorry about yesterday when I told you about purple and colors understanding you right about most of it but colors are advance and complicated it's so much to learn cmy and ryb is color wheels that works differently everybody debates but I myself accepts but another secret you haven't find out about is that you can make yellow what I've learned is if you mix 2 colors that contains that same color it neutralize each other to reveal that color within them sometimes can you make a fluorescent color wheel using neon pink as red neon blue and neon yellow I'm just curious to see the results of the fluorescent secondary colors you can make from that if it's ok

No worries....no need to apologize! The thing to keep in mind about demos where they mix blue or yellow from other colors is the results are much less vivid and pure than the yellow that you would get in a tube.

I just sealed a gouache painting with with the Dorland wax medium and had zero issues. I used the spectrafix on an oil pastel painting. I think I did singing wrong because the spray come out uneven. It did sealed the painting tho.
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 15 күн бұрын
Dorland's is quick and easy! As for using Spectrafix on oil pastels, did you use their final fix or the Degas fixative? I checked their site and it says the beeswax in the final fix doesn't work very well with oil pastels. They recommended the Degas fixative instead. I haven't tried it on oil pastels so I can't verify how well it works.
@ElleWhyBee
@ElleWhyBee 15 күн бұрын
@@ChrisBreier It was the Degas. I only used it once. It was a sketch study, so I wasn't too upset about it. It didn't smear the work, but I can see where the individual droplets dried when I hold it up to the light. I picked up some cray-pas oil pastel varnish in Japan. I'll try that one or next time I play around with the medium.

You're welcome! And yes, there's always something to be learned by reading about (or watching videos of) artists working in various mediums...even if you don't work in the same medium. Books about oils, watercolor, gouache, etc include useful information about working with color schemes, composition, and simplifying subjects. How long after painting with gouache does it take to be fully dry and less likely to smear?
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 15 күн бұрын
The paint itself dries rather quickly. Relatively thin layers are touch dry in minutes and it seems fully dry in about 30 minutes. I only had an issue with smearing when I brushed on the natural glass too soon after spraying the painting with spectrafix.. So I would wait a day to let the spectrafix cure before applying the natural glass.

You might be interested in a video I recently posted where I tried mixing purple from 6 different types of red. Magenta produces a vibrant purple that's similar to Dioxazine. All of the 6 reds produced a duller purple like the one in this video. Here's the link kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9mffsqfzZ_OhY0.htmlsi=J-SOnJXC7xzRALun

@@ChrisBreier i understand there is no such thing as a perfect primary color so any color can be !ade you just use as to what is considered to be primary to make other colors I seen videos of different people mixing reds with blues and it makes good purples is a thing called color bias warm redds gives you dull brownish purples but if the red doesn't have yellow in it which is a warm bias it would make more purple than brown and dark muddy colors it's the same with green you should try to make a mixing green video if the yellow have red bias it would make dull olive green but if the yellow is cool or without red it makes better pure greens

Thanks Danny! The spectrafix spray works well for sealing drawings too so it's rather useful. I guess you can't use Spectrafix as a topcoat for oils or acrylics....you can use it underneath to seal a drawing before you paint over it. So far I've been using Gamvar for varnishing oils which isn't too bad to work with. It contains Gamsol which if I remember correctly is also naphtha. If I find something better I will probably make a video about it. 🙂

I'm finally thinking of getting a high grade watercolour set like this after 2 and a bit years of using a cheap Prang watercolour set! This is probably the only good (imo) video review of this, the others talk too much of other things.. are you able to switch out the pans? Thanks for the video :)
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 16 күн бұрын
Thanks Amanda! Yes, you can replace the pans when you use up the paint or if you just want to replace one of the colors. These should work better than the Prang set. Cotman are the Winsor and Newton line of student grade watercolors. At some point you should try out a pan of professional watercolor to see if you like it.
