Lakeview puller is probably the best for pulling Moen, better than ona

The secret of removing the Moen cartridges is don't pull on the stem until you have gotten the outer shell of the cartridge to turn inside of the valve body. If the rubbers are stuck the center stem will be pulled out of the cartridge and you will have to then remove the stuck cartridge. When that happens I use a 12mm tap threaded into the cartridge and then either twist or pull out the stuck cartridge with vice grips on the tap. Ugly and slow but it works.

At an Hosp I used to work at we didn’t dare shut off water at stops on side of valve because it would be an automatic leak at shut offs, we had to do a whole bldg shut down, 35 y/o hosp with plumbing nightmares, pinholes, ain’t nobody got time for that, clamp with piece of small rubber sheet & you’re good.

Saw the other moen Cartrige swap Im just wondering whats to keep the center from pulling out ? its possible it woulda been easy with thev other puller they arent all a bitch that said I might just buy the Ona! have a good week .

No. You didn't try everything you could. Cartridge is plastic. You can chip away at it with screw driver, drill, long nose pliers and hammer combination. I've done it multiple times in similar situation. There is risk of damaging valve body, but because sealing surface is pretty wide small scratches and dents usually is not a problem. You can also apply some heat to the valve body to melt or soften plastic a bit. Breaking off tabs on top and bottom and twisting cartridge also helps cutting gasket to make it easier to pull.

It happens, I usually just keep twisting it in circles(both directions) and it ends up cutting/chewing the rubber and it comes out. We have a LOT of Moens around my area.

i hate CPVC..worked at a hotel that was only 5 years old and i had to replace a outside hose faucet...could not get the shutoff valve inside to turn...ended up shutting entire hotel down...that stuff gets so brittle

Sometimes they are tough to get them out. The rubber seals you mention slide out of place and get caught in the input slots inside the valve body. Last week I had a call to fix the same valve on an outside shower. While trying to pull cartridge out, the spindle broke in half leaving half in the valve body. Luckily it was an easy fix as it was in an outside shower. Here in Massachusetts we must use single lever valves, (antiscald valve) That is one reason I don't like Posi-temp valves. In addition to there is no volume control. It is either on or off. I miss the Moentrol cartridges

Ona pullers are the best

Use to CAREFULLY drill the cartridge out as a last resort.... Worked for me all the time.... Those are a pain to get out.....

Great job. There’s a new tool for removing stuck Moen Cartridges. It’s a tool that is designed to use an impact drill.

Those Moen posi temp cartridges can be a huge pain to pull. There is so much rubber touching the inside of the valve body that it creates an enormous amount of friction. Add in a little scale build-up and you have a real problem on your hands. Horrible design.

At least it wasn’t a big apartment building. Send it.

Just curious, why install another Moen shower valve, if the cartridge replacement was so bad that you had to replace the entire shower valve to begin with?

Rarely do I ever have something to share with you knowledge wise. Should you encounter that again, when the stem snaps off the cartridge you can break the inner core with a smaller flathead then fold the outer core in on itself and extract it with needle nose pliers. The issue is the rubbers on the side. One guy already said the ona puller, I don't have one but everybody swears by them.

ONA puller, it uses a crank for Moen cartridges. Thank me later

I cannot believe you just destroy their shower for a moen positive cartridge… that is unbelievable I have replaced hundreds of these that have broken off. Take your time put some heat to it. Absolutely disgusting how you did that should’ve told him to hire somebody that knows what they’re doing….

those can be very much impossible when you have "HARD WATER/WELL/ MINERALS", the handle keep turning not because of internal issues but that black piece you remove is the handle stop against the chrome tube as it rides the outer edge...thxs for sharing...

Shower cartridges can turn from a 5 minute job to a 2 hour job real quick. It's 50/50, sometimes they slide right out and other times you have to fight them. They make better cartridge pullers than those Home Depot ones now fyi. It's totally worth the investment to get one of those.

I made a sleeve out of 1" pvc that sits on the perimeter of the valve body that gives you a little more travel when you crank the puller the problem with that puller is it doesn't engage the valve body so there is no gear puller action

The hacksaw bolt cutting method works perfectly fine on BRASS bolts. The cheap Chinese bolts that come with toilets now are no longer BRASS. They are steel coated with brass, so much harder to cut.
