This song is really good, and here’s my interpretation of it. It’s the representation of refusing to acknowledge your trauma, creating a warped perception of reality where everything is better, or in this case smiling. The distortions and a slight strain sound like when that reality begins to crumble so you convince yourself more aggressively that this is what reality is. It resonates with me, because I went through that. I had a spiral of dissociation for four years as a child where I sugarcoated everything after my dog died. It leaked into my dreams and I started to have these dreams, almost like the Backrooms, where everything was surreal. But then it started to crumble, in those dreams I was hunted by something, and it resembled my dog, but horrifying. His fur only sparsely covered his mangled and rotting flesh, in some places with the bones exposed. His eyes were dead and glossy, rolling loosely in his skull. I don’t think he had a bottom jaw, but if he did it was barely hanging on. Every time he’d move it be in jagged, lurching movements accompanied by the noise of clacking and tearing, like he was ripping himself apart by his mere existence. Luckily I’ve gotten over his death now, but for those years it haunted me, it’s unnatural movement and it’s just pure horror of seeing a creature you loved turned into a wretched horror stalking me when I felt the most safe.
