We used an open cage bearing, the oil is designed to go through the bearing and pool in the bottom of crank case. There's a recirc line that takes the oil form the bottom bearing recirculates to the top bearing and lubes it. We know this because every motor that's ever been submerged, if it's not pickled correctly-in our opinion it should be taken apart-the bottom bearing sits in a pool of water that is then pumped to the top bearing.

Will it work on johson 225hp? I bought a cheap one and its starving the motor over 4000 rpms
@Oexchange
@Oexchange Ай бұрын
John 225hp takes a specially designed nonVRO fuel pump. One style is just two fuel pumps put together the other basically looks like the VRO pump with the VRO pump not apart of the unit. If you're just using a single pump it will not provide enough fuel.

The throttle cable attaches to a pivot arm on the starboard side of the engine above the pivot bolt there is a screw, loosen it to lower the idle. Also make sure all the throttle plates on the carburetor are closed.

@Oexchange
@Oexchange Ай бұрын
The most important way to know if a motor is running correctly is if it will idle. Outboards and other engines can have many things wrong with them and they will still run at high speed but will not idle. As always start with a compression and spark test before you do any diagnostic work. If it passes those tests consider rebuilding the carburetors.

nice info Tim! I will add Suzuki also has a manifold-type oil injection. Not sure but think they both use the same Mikuni oiling unit. The interesting thing about the Suzuki is it starts to atomize the oil after about 3000rpm, making for a more uniform coverage on the crank. Does the Yamaha also do that?
@Oexchange
@Oexchange 3 ай бұрын
Good question! It does not. It dribbles oil into the intake behind the carburetors and relies on the airflow to atomize it.

I'm facing similar issues. New to me skiff style double hull. Has a 90hp 2 stroke Yamaha. She squats bad and had exceptionally terrible hole shot. I've been told that my motor is too low & my prop is bad. The ventilation plate is exactly inline with the bottom of the hull. My motor sounds sluggish like your first trial run did too. What about if it’s on a Yamaha
@Oexchange

The Yamaha adjustment is done by the plastic piece attached to the end of the cable. You just thread it accordingly and make sure the cable has plenty of tension in neutral. Make sure there's at least 8 threads inside the plastic.

Dang...I have a 96 150 Saltwater Series. Running as good today as the day I got it. I do inspect it beginning and ending of each season though. Did boat have a fuel filter separator? Takes a lot of time and water to do that that kind of damage. Had to be running continuously like crap.

There is a fuel water separator however we're not sure if it was ever checked or replaced. We require them on all of our rebuilds so we are actually replacing it right now with one with a clear bowl.

Do you recommend a specific drill RPM, or any RPM is fine as long as you see oil dripping. Do you measure the quantity/rate of oil or just if oil is coming out then youre generally confident its working. I have a 2003 40hp 2 stroke yamaha outboard, oil tank on motor only. Thanks in advance
@Oexchange
@Oexchange 7 ай бұрын
Generally we don't measure the amount of oil dripping, any RPM is fine. We usually have the drill at max RPM and it's drips about 2-3 drips per second but that's just an estimate.

Great video. I purchased a second hand motor with oil injection and it's difficult to really gauge if it's operating to spec just from the viewing the clear sight hoses running to the carbs, or oil level dropping in the engine mounted oil tank. This test looks to be about as conclusive as you can get. Will give it a try thank you

There is a lot of debate online about keeping oil injection vs bypassing it and premixing instead. It's nice to hear from people who actually work on and fix these systems regularly and can provide insight on how they work and what sort of inspection/maintenance they require to keep them functioning properly. Excellent video thank you
@airdreams1

I don't have a vro. But I was kind of looking at one and considering possibly buying it. Question I would ask is why would you run this system at all? Could it not just be removed and you just go to a straight pre-mix set up like any other motor?
@chrishoward8572
@chrishoward8572 7 ай бұрын
This is what people do on other outboard motors. For example on my Yamaha motor the oil injection pump is separate to the fuel pump, so it can be disabled more simply. In this case with the VRO they are both within the same unit/assembly, so I'm not sure how easy it is. I have no experience with the VRO personally so can't comment. Give it a google I'm sure there is info out there of others who have done it or tried.
@Oexchange
@Oexchange 7 ай бұрын
We do recommend disconnecting the VRO whenever possible but some owner's do prefer to keep it. We often see them fail so it's very important to make sure it's working correctly.We consider the OMC system the most unreliable system and non-VRO pumps are available for less than $100.

I have a Yamaha 200HP HPDI direct injection and every time I speak to the dealer he says I should upgrade by now with 800 hours on the clock. He has me worried but the motor has never missed and beat and has been serviced once a year by a Yamaha dealer since new in 2011. It's a struggle to justify spending money on a 4/stroke. Has anyone got one of these and know how many hours people got out of them, I hear around 1500 to 2500 before rebuild required.
