One of the primary reasons I left Virginia was the HUMIDITY. The only 'Welcome to Virginia' sign without the Dogwood and Cardinal. Driving on the 'Left side' is England, Japan and Australia.

From what I can see of the pictures, I'll wager the scent you call 'yummy' is OSMANTHUS - known as Tea Olive. At the intersection of I 64 and Northampton Boulevard, in Virginia Beach, there's a grove off the athletic field of Virginia Wesleyan which can be 'enjoyed' while transiting in the car.

No criticism here. Please get the tannin-infused water washed off the hull as soon as you can. The longer it sits the harder it gits. It also sure looks like your jib/genoa is rolled up way too tight. You might ask a sailmaker to get an idea of the best tension.

Biting bugs we called by Greenhead or 'Jersey green heads' . it was tough bui!ding boat on the jersey shore with them biting you all day! . All the big manufacturers got kicked out or went bust years ago except Viking yachts in new Gretena.

Wow, Those bugs I'm pretty sure are what we called in South Jersey ,the infamous " Greenheads" . They would get inside and out on my boat when I was flounder fishing. They bite like bandits. The only good thing is they're pretty slow. You can usually swat them , as long as you get them before they get you.
@Spoondrifters

I rowed Norfolk-to-Elizabeth City for three years when I was in the Sea Explorers. Lake Drummond and the Ditch is haunted.

@jerrycallender9352
@jerrycallender9352 17 сағат бұрын
@@Spoondrifters Well, to locals' the 'Dismal Swamp' is Lake Drummond and the feeder canal and the 'ditch' bordering Rt 17. We had to tie up for the night and were familiar with the noises made by bear and fox, and there were also intermittent 'noises' - screams and 'calls' that were NOT of this Earth. Also, we would see lights hovering over the water then vanishing, then reappearing...There had been a 'sanctuary' encampment of enslaved people who hid in in the Swamp and there were no 'News' of them ever leaving the Swamp.

Curious to know how you managed the voltage as you ran through the river and the Dismal Swamp. Were you limited much by range or speed?
@Spoondrifters
@Spoondrifters 3 күн бұрын
It was fine. We used our 5kw generator to maintain the speed we needed to make it to the locks on time. But the canal doesn’t have any current so it’s just flat water. The easiest for our electric motor. Moving from the visitor center dock to the Douglas Road docks we ran on batteries. We used the generator to top off batteries on the rainy days.

You guys are brave, we chickened out, same keel, same mast, we did Virginia Cut. It wasn’t bad at all! They say a lot of commercial traffic. Great Bridge was the Highlight for sure. We traversed in May 2021. Currently the sailboat is in Chrisfield MD. Fair Winds y’all! Oh, Tammy I love your hair! Perfect for you. I am chicken again to cut waist length graying hair!

We may try the Virginia Cut on our way south if the weather doesn’t allow for a trip around Hatteras. Good to hear it wasn’t bad. I was worried about the long distances between anchorages.

Basically we have the mast boot wooden shims and rubber mast tape on the outside. The shims keep our mast boot tight. I took rubber mast tape and heat shrink and heated around as to not allow water to come into place with it… working great no leaks… May want to try that instead of metal cause the salt air will rust out the screws and tighteners… Have a great one !!!
