The stern gland greaser "should be" for greasing the white metal shaft bearing behind the stuffing box, not really much to do with the packing.

Hi Matt. On a narrowboat, the stern gland greaser lubricates the packing, so it is very much to do with it. I know other systems are like you describe.

Brilliant video Alan we are really enjoying this series. We were in the Lake District back in July and hired a day boat from Bridge House Marina as it’s unlikely we will ever take ours up there.

Interested video with all the bridges and that boat house that had roll up door. There are some amazing houses and boat houses. Great to Reggie, Sally and you stopping for beer and chips 👍👍👍👍. The drone footage is amazing , love the beautiful country over there.

If I am not mistaken, that ornate boathouse used to be a lot MORE ornate. What you see now is what is left of the original structure. That terraced hillslope at 19:21 is intriguing! How's Reggie's paw ? Doesn't appear to have affected the old lad's appetite. As a real ale aficionado (won't turn up my nose at a good lager though) I am envious of those canal side pubs. Onwards.

Thanks for your comment Stephen, not having been before I can’t make any ‘before and after’ comparisons. Reggie was much better the following day thanks. As my local canal is rural, it was nice being on a canal passing through urban areas with canal side pubs. Cheers

I used to work in one of the old mills next the canal in the city centre (the one with the red conical tower) and loved watching the boats travel past from the office window, but as I retired last September I now have more time to walk along the canal instead, it’s a shame I didn’t spot you to say hello 👋. Looking forward to the next episode.

I have a question would it be technically possible to upgrade the British Canal Network so that Wide Beams could travel the entire network? Also would it be possible to change the gauge of the Scotland Canals so English Narrowboats can gain access?

Hi Terence the canals were dug 200 years ago using picks, shovels and wheelbarrows, so yes it is technically possible but the cost would be humongous, as so much infrastructure would have to change, locks, bridges, canal widths etc! The few Scottish canals there are, are wide enough to accommodate wide beams. The topography between England and Scotland would make it a non-starter. Cheers

@MyNarrowboatVenture thanks and of course and a big part of why the Canals are do popular with leisure boats is because the industrial users are not needing the waterways as much with road and rail being more efficient.

@@terenceseymour-tf8rptassie725 Very much so, the canals are sometimes used for transporting stone/ballast for projects but on the whole there is very little commercial traffic. There are of course the fuel boats to service boaters needs!

I think I’d have issues with getting through the door of NB Linden, in ways both vertically and horizontally 😁 What a beautiful pub Th’Owd Tithe Barn is. I very nearly ended up on the Lancaster, but alas despite getting through an initial first stage job interview, it wasn’t to be. I still think, to be that close to one of the most breathtaking areas of England (the Lake District) and the peace, relaxation and beauty of the canal, you’d be spoiled for choice. Great work Alan, Sally and Reggie.

The green Caravans on wheels in your video are just like the ones the people used to live in that worked on the roads.i new some one that lived in one when I was 7. I remember going in there's on my 7th birthday.the friend i new asked me in , and her mum gave me a necklace and bracelet.for my birthday.

So pleased you had good weather. The Lancaster is a lovely canal. It's looking good since we last sailed I 1986 Wonder if you spotted what was our boat back then. I'm told it's still going strong and moored by Galgate. Heigh Ho is the name. A 23ft Norman cruiser 😊

Travelling as an anonimous boater must feel strange and pleasant at the same time. Lovely sceneries, the aqueduct has its own interesting history.
