If you remember from "Open Arms", Odysseus & Polites almost ate a lotus fruit, the one you said was like drugs. Odysseus mixed some of the lotus into the wine before giving it to the cyclops. It's why he passed out right before he could kill even more of them. They were doing damage to him, but it was more like how a mosquito would prick a human. What do humans do when they're annoyed by an insect? First they wave/move around trying to get rid of it, then if becomes too annoying, that's when we grab insect repellants, etc. That's basically what the cyclops felt, he picked up the club to kill them for real when he started getting seriously annoyed. Odysseus knew that by sheer size they would lose in case of a fight, which is why he basically drugged the wine. If the cyclops was merciful and let them go after receiving the wine, he would've just passed out from what he thought was regular wine, it's not harmful so no foul. But the drug was useful here in the fight, although it kicked in a little too late

Ik it's been two months since you've reacted, but to add further insight to why Athena's connection & mentoring of Odysseus is significant: by ancient Greek standards Odyssues actually really sucks as a hero, simply bc he used his brains in battle rather than physical strength. Him coming up with the trojan horse idea, while actually very smart & it got them to actually win the war after 10 years, was considered very cowardly simply bc they didn't face the enemies head on anymore. There's two Greek gods of war: Ares & Athena. Ares focuses more on the violence & bloodshed aspect of war while Athena focuses more on strategizing for the best outcome & least possible loss. Both are highly respected & revered as gods, although looking at it from ancient Greek standards, in terms of war Ares is more favored bc of the whole strong = good, smart = lame thing. She favors Odysseus not just bc he displayed wisdom at an early age (in the song he captured a divine beast through tactics & not blindly attacking), but bc he's a very rare case of a Greek hero who'd rather use mostly his brain than his impulses to act first & think later. With this context in mind "My Goodbye" stings even more bc this could both be interpreted as her redacting her divine blessings for him, but also that she's disappointed that he decided to think like every other Greek hero: act first, think later
