Nice detailed and correct explanations along the way. Esp the Stromberg CD's and their foibles. (I had a Hillman Hunter with a pair of these carbies, and they never did run properly. I eventually replaced them with SU's.) To your issue, I suppose the solution is mentioned way below somewhere, but I wonder if the distributer cam plate is anchored to the housing correctly. It is supposed to be held in place by the vacuum advance link, but because the vacuum advance is disconnected, maybe there's a problem with the diaphragm, so the cam plate is wandering around inside the distributer. This would also explain why the static timing was set to 2 degrees. Then you set it to 6 and the engine woudn't even run. Then you set it back - it started ok, but revved UP when you advanced the ignition by rotating the distributer essentially advancing the static timing back to the position where it wouldn't start. And when you road tested it, it ran ok at high RPM, maybe because the cam plate had reached the limit of its travel, making the timing at maximum advance, which was perfect for high RPM running.

The car looks fantastic, Elin! John will be very pleased with how it turns out, I'm sure! I absolutely admire your set of skills in any area related with car restoration - but may I enter a very small word of rebuke: using your callipers as a prying tool... 😉

Someone once said to me : "when carpets are the next to last job after a restoration, it's easy street" .. I never thought that, and after watching you do John's car, I still think easy street lies in checking the tyre pressures before the final test drive. 😅

The interior light should be farther back, almost to the rear shelf. It might be a good place for a LED bulb.

Hi Elin from Oz. I've asked this before and still don't know, but is the boot (trunk ) lid damaged?
@RustyBeauties
@RustyBeauties 3 күн бұрын
No, it is just not great bodywork and paint. However, John has two lids, both painted at the same time. The other one didn't have holes for a boot rack, so we already exchanged them (after this video). Not that the other one is better... The paintshop didn't do a great job on the whole entire car

Nice job on the handbrake. I used the cardboard for the driveshaft tunnel over the brake cables as a template and the bent a piece of aluminum sheet to replace it. It turned out quite well and is much more solid than the old cardboard so it won’t collapse in time. Edge trim around the edges smoothed out sharp edges.

I´m waiting of the next episode of the Miata with your son. I think it is not a good idea to put carpet on carpet, it shall be slide and its to high for the foot throttle. Better is to use dirt mats.

great job on the handbrake fix! I always learn something in your videos and I almost never disagree with your approach to things. However, in the case of glueing down carpet I must disagree. I prefer to be able to remove carpet. They are a bit of a pain to install, but I like to use carpet snaps screwed to /through the floor. John is a lucky man to have you finishing his car!

I’m doing this right now! Yesterday glued all the jute to the bottom of the carpet. Waiting on screws myself😂! Thanks for showing the transmission light. Agreed, not hooking up the door switch wire. I’m having some issues with the center carpet piece in middle of parcel shelf. Well done!!!!

Question, does the roll bar appreciably stiffen the body/chassis?
@michaelstoliker971
@michaelstoliker971 3 күн бұрын
Those rollbars sold by places like Moss Motors, etc., are purely cosmetic. They don't stiffen anything and will not save your life in a roll-over.

FYI, I’m watching this again and heard you say “many of you prefer the body shaping videos”. Personally, I prefer the mechanical videos (engines, suspension etc). I’ve learned so much from them and the early videos have me the knowledge and confidence to do all of the suspension and brake work on my 6.

The trick to colour tune is to wait a minute between each small movement of the adjustment screw/jet. Correct Float height is crucial aswel.

Hi Elin! Did you not have springs for the Laygear thrust washer (with the tab)? I see there are springs in the shop manual and on Spitbits - was this a model year change?

Well, its 5 yrs later Sir Elin ! Outstanding ! Your efforts are more than inspiring they bring hard facts and how-to's to my live time rejuvenation of a 1974 TR6 that was "hacked" and somewhat abandoned but is running the blacktop on Vancouver Island, right now ! 35 items on my list, so far and thats using it everyday. Seats to re-cushion, carbs too(two) tune, boot to re-panel inside etc,etc. BUT She's all steel and original vinyl/wood and Factory installed "stuff". "Snoopy" lives ! So my 4-H training in-hand, TLC , YOUR vids, Moss & Co. We're living the new "normal"... at 70 (yrs & mph). AND lovig it ! 😀🤗😀 SLANTE !

While checking your speed gears you also have to check the condition of the small synchronizer gear teeth. Make sure the teeth have good, pronounced pointed “roof tops”. If the small teeth tops are worn, chipped, and or rounded over it will delay the hub from pushing the baulk ring and slowing the gear and letting everything line up and slide freely. Even with new brass synchronizer baulk rings you could still have a shift issue if there are bad synchronizer teeth on your speed gear. It must not be overlooked. Correct gear oil is also a big issue. Some sulphur additives in GL5 will attack brass syncro’s and turn them black and possibly cause premature wear.

Hi Elin, I rebuilt my gearbox with help from your earlier videos… I replaced my syncro rings as they were close to .030 and checked all the end floats etc. however I still get a crunch from 3 to 4 if I am not careful and also from 4 - 3… what do you think can cause this ?

Hi Elin, I have learned a whole lot from this 1964 TR4 series. I noticed that at the beginning of the series you noted the car had a door alignment problem, however, I don’t remember seeing any thing about it being resolved. The reason I am asking is my 65 TR4A has a drivers side door slight misalignment. Do you think if I sent you an image you might know how it could be corrected? Thanks James
