Prevention is better thsn cure. Always wipe down your chrome work when it gets wet. For highly polished chrome, rinse off the dirty water and dry thoroughly. Then use a good polish like Mer to not only give your chrome a nice shine but it protects it. Rinsing or washing off water droplets is vital as they contain grit which will scratch your chrome. Use a shammy leather to dry off the chrome before applying your polish. One more bit of advice, never use washing up liquid to wash your car or paintwork, always use a wash/wax product, rinse with clean water and then shammy leather it dry. Washing up liquid is a degreaser and will strip the old wax away leaving bare paint, the idea is to build up the layers of wax protection. If you wash your car properly its easy to maintain a good shine as well as good protection from the elements. If you want a good rust remover, try Jenolite rust remover for chrome. Its a bit expensive but should do the trick. They also do a rust converter that chemically transforms rust and stops it. Rust converters are used quite often in the marine or boat side of things.

@@ChromeandCarRestoration Cheers. Just building an 81 Suzuki RM465 from the frame up. Full nut and bolt part number job. Have you tried zink plating? It's rather rewarding, especially with the price of parts and thats if you can find them.

Yes. Zinc is one of the easier plating processes.

This video took me back many years to the 70s when I ran a plating shop. Most of our degreasing was done with Trichloroethylene, but you would,nt get away with that these days. Copper flashing the parts mekes all the difference to the finish, and longevity. I never ceased to be amazed, and amused by the number of people who would present me with a component which was totally pitted and thought that just dipping it in a tank would restore it to its former glory. Pleasant memories of a former life. I must commend you for showing the public How It Should Be Done.

If money were no object, on deeper pitting, would it be better to clean the part, then plate in copper and grind the copper back to essentially fill the corrosion without removing as much material?

Hello. I want to make a transaction regarding my motorcycle. However, I cannot tell whether the coating is chrome or nickel plated. Decorative chrome plating may also be under nickel plating. Should I prepare a separate solution for both or is there a solution that removes both at the same time? Finally, do I need to do chrome plating over nickel plating to get a very shiny appearance? Because I also want it to be durable.
