Turkey are getting out of their group they have more than enough quality to do so with 2 promising young players who play for Real Madrid and Juventus respectively and they also have a guy who just led Inter Milan to the title in Serie A last season and he’s seen as one of the best midfielders in the world and they secured an impressive win against Georgia where they showed signs on how good they can be when these players are at their full potential and apart from Portugal, I don’t see what’ll stop them from getting out of their group. I would be shocked if they can cause an upset on one of the powerhouses of international football.

Arda Guler has hit top form at such an important time and it’s great to see him producing and showcasing what he’s made of. His debut season at Real Madrid was frustrating mainly because of injuries which caused him to miss a lot of games and there was some disappointment among fans because of all the hype around him and everyone just wanted to see him on the pitch as his talent level is genuinely evident. There were people who had some misconceptions about him wrote him off said that he was a benchwarmer flop Eden Hazard 2.0, he’ll never be good enough for Real Madrid and he’s another Odegaard and Kubo. Game time proved to be hard for him to come by, when he played he showed flashes of glimpses he scored some goals and he was promising every time I watched him and while I would want to see more of him and his season would’ve gone differently if he was healthy, he has been fantastic of late and has now carried that form over to the EUROs with the national team. Turkey in their opening game of the tournament secured an excellent win over Georgia where Guler had his moment in the 2nd half when the game was tied 1-1 because he put the country on his back and scored a banger from outside of the box and rightfully so was the MOTM as he was the best player on the pitch. The EUROs could prove to be a breakout moment for him where he showcases himself to the world simply because from a talent perspective when fully fit, he’s as good as Lamine Yamal if not better, and it’s best to enjoy these young ballers rather than spend 24/7 comparing them to determine which one is better, he’s among the best young players in the world when he’s in form. The fact that at his age both Barcelona and Real Madrid were bottoming it out for his signature 12 months ago is exactly what you need to know about him. His dribbling is absolutely superb, he has great ball control technical skill creative abilities and an eye for goals and he often gets compared to Mesut Ozil. I really hope that next season, he gets more minutes at Real Madrid because they’re better off not loaning him out as he’s capable of contributing to the team if he stays fit especially when he could potentially come off the back of a great EUROs where he leads Turkey in the tournament.

What’s funny about Real Madrid is how they keep doing it over and over again in Europe. They can be so bad for 90 minutes and get outplayed by a better team, yet because of the power of friendship, these guys somehow perform late juju and manage to come back and win the game.

When people say that Mbappe Haaland Vini or Bellingham one of them are the best players in the world, I don’t like when they get compared to Messi and Ronaldo and putting unrealistic expectations on them to replicate their standards. Mbappe and Haaland are excellent players don’t get me wrong and no matter how well they play domestically or the amount of goals they score, they’ll never reach their level from a longevity perspective because Messi and Ronaldo were doing it for 10-15+ years straight. As great of a goalscorer Haaland is, even if he’s scoring goals at a staggering rate for club and country, he’ll never break Messi’s record of 91 goals in a calendar year it’s the same thing with Mbappe as well. Also, the narrative that football fell off if one of Bellingham or Vini wins the Ballon Dor this year is absolutely stupid. Last season, Bellingham had 23 goals and 13 assists 36 G/A in all competitions and Vini had 24 goals and 11 assists 35 G/A in all competitions and some people see their stats very poor because we’re used to seeing Messi and Ronaldo put up those numbers meanwhile other players like Neymar Robert Lewandowksi and Luis Suarez never won a Ballon Dor despite having great statistical seasons and that’s because they played in the wrong era. We have to accept the fact that we’ll never see anything like that again, Messi and Ronaldo set the standard so high and it’s difficult to determine what a good season in terms of stats should look like for a Ballon Dor winner. It’s true that other players despite playing for weaker teams had more goals than them, it doesn’t mean that they’re better than Vini or Bellingham. The Ballon Dor is won by the best footballer in the world, not the best goalscorer there’s a difference between the 2 and people need to understand that, as we have the Golden Boot for a reason as that award itself speaks volumes about your scoring ability. We shouldn’t be comparing Vini and Bellingham to players who had better stats in different eras it’s just misleading without using any sort of context.

After experiencing an injury plagued debut season at Real Madrid, Arda Guler found his form at the right time. Towards the end of the season when he started to get more game time, he was in great touch in front of goal and he was very good showing glimpses of how good he can be when healthy. This bodes well for him going into the EUROs. Turkey are seen as massive dark horses and while they underperformed at the last EUROs where they finished bottom of their group while not securing a single point, this time around I’m confident that they’ll get out of their group and Guler will contribute and play well. Their group consists of Portugal Czech Republic and Georgia and apart from Portugal who’ll advance very easily, Turkey will finish behind them as runner ups and they could face one of the bigger teams in the knockouts and it could be a disadvantage for them, in international football there could be some shocks and who knows what if they knock out someone like England or France for example if they play them. I’m not saying it could happen, but at the same time, you can’t rule it out. Guler will go into this tournament with a lot of confidence as he’s likely to impress and show the world what he’s made of.

At the age of 38, Luka Modric is still going strong at an elite level for club and country. He has enjoyed another season filled with trophies at Real Madrid where he won the league and his 6th champions league title and now is about to represent Croatia at the EUROs which could be his last ever major tournament for his country. Despite them being seen as underdogs, Croatia have done pretty well in recent international tournaments as we’ve seen what they’ve done in back to back World Cups and overall they’re a difficult team to go up against and Modric has been key to their success. Even though their group contains both Spain and Italy, I expect Croatia to advance to the next round and depending on who they play against in the RD of 16, another run to the semifinals could be possible for them especially since you don’t want to count them out even though this is a team that’s getting older and we don’t know how much they have left in the tank. They’re a team that has proven that they can never get slept upon even if other squad have much more talent than them on paper. After overachieving with the national team, Modric deserves a trophy for Croatia and while it might not happen at the EUROs, in football anything is possible.

I feel like Toni Kroos is about to have a perfect ending to his successful career. His final season at Real Madrid was a 9.5/10 as even after winning everything, he won La Liga and yet another Champions League title while having a great performance in the final getting an assist in his last ever game for them and he did it while playing sublime football. Earlier this year, he came out of international retirement with Germany as he’s going for one last dance at the EUROs. Prior to his return, they lost 6 out of their last 10 games, it’s not a coincidence that after Kroos came back, Germany have won their last 3 games and in the process they beat France and the Netherlands and he got 2 assists. Their midfield is absolutely stacked and his presence alone makes them strong contenders to go all the way on home soil. He has had unbelievable influence on the team since coming back and from watching his performances, it makes you wonder “why is this guy retiring altogether.” Given their disappointing performances in recent tournaments and the lack of an elite striker, those are the only concerns surrounding their team other than that, Germany will have a good tournament and it would be the cherry on top for Kroos if they win the EUROs in his last ever career game and then who knows again he could win the Ballon Dor as whatever happens in the EUROs is what’s going to determine the Ballon Dor winner whether it’s Bellingham Kane Mbappe Kroos Foden or maybe even Rodri if Spain gets far. Talk about going out on top.

Now that Kylian Mbappe’s future has been sorted out once and for all and is finally a Real Madrid player, he’s able to go into the EUROs and can focus solely on football and delivering for his country at another major tournament. France are arguably the favorites to win the EUROs, 3 finals in their last 4 tournaments they boast a lot of star power experience and youth in that team, while they’ve had some wobbly moments in a couple of friendlies of late, the strength of their squad means that they have a chance of going all the way in this tournament. In my opinion, Mbappe is the best player in the world purely off of individual brilliance and at his very best, he cannot be stopped and he produces some of his best performances with the France national team, look at what he did in back to back World Cups including scoring in 2 consecutive finals (hat trick in 2022) and he was the top scorer at the last World Cup. When you put a world class player like him on a stacked team that’s world class, I’m telling you he’ll deliver. Due to the impact of international football, Mbappe is one good tournament away from a Ballon Dor and he’ll be the frontrunner if France wins the EUROs. With the potential of winning the EUROs finishing the tournament as the top scorer and best player, if all of that happens, I could see him winning the Ballon Dor this year.

Coming off the back of a stellar debut season at Real Madrid, Jude Bellingham is going into his 3rd major tournament with the England national team despite being just 20 years old. Given the plethora of options that England has from an attacking perspective, it’ll be interesting to see where Gareth Southgate plays him because we realistically don’t know their best starting lineup. Will he play in a double pivot next to Declan Rice and offer their midfield a lot of balance which will help their attack or will he play in a role in which he’s excelled in at Real Madrid all season as a number 10 ahead of Phil Foden and Cole Palmer. Due to the presence of Harry Kane up top, I don’t think Bellingham will have a great tournament in terms of goalscoring especially when he’s playing alongside the best striker in the world who might finish the tournament with the most goals. Due to the fact that he scored over 20+ goals in his debut season at Real Madrid, even if he plays well, if he doesn’t score a lot of goals at the EUROs, he flopped at the tournament and of course he doesn’t have to score in order to make an impact in the game, he just has to make his presence known and get involved. We’re all talking about the race for the Ballon Dor should he win it over Vinicius Junior if he has a good Copa América with Brazil and even though realistically speaking, he might not be the best player on the England national team since they have Kane and Foden, the way Bellingham plays at the EUROs could depend on whether he’ll win the Ballon Dor or not and he has to win it. With the names that England have, you go “wow they have a world class team”, but when you actually watch them, they have so many issues and while they’ve come close in recent tournaments, due to how high the expectations are on this team, I don’t think that Gareth Southgate is the right manager to elevate them to a further level and win them an international trophy. While it’s not his fault, it doesn’t help they have arguably in my opinion the greatest player to have never won a trophy even though he’s so good, I don’t expect them to win the EUROs, England has enough talent to make a deep run and at least get to the final.
