I had family in Plymouth & Kingston & Larksville & shavertown, I heard plenty of that kind of talk growing up, especially around my Polish grandparents. I don't get around that part of the state much anymore & haven't in a long time, I wonder do they still talk like that there or is that something that died off

Having studied people in every sense of the word out of survival tactics as a teen when we moved from a very worldly Lake Community in NW New Jersey to Cowhampshire just before 9th grade. At that point I was pretty much well versed in openness to a greater or lesser extent. We were upper upper middle class meaning "highest end". Mother NYC suburbs raised Upper Class,dad working class but most articulate and intelligent of his kin. As an adult,moved to the NYC area at 21. Having been so misunderstood in my own back woods 3 places by my own neighbors of every class,I then found myself in those same over observant leanings,that have never left me. Yes I did well in the NYC area bolstered by a sense of ancestral belonging along with childhood memories of long visits with extended family throughout childhood. One striking common theme I found is that yes though there is a proviciality as with anywhere, on the same coin flip it at any given and???? "Openness",beyond belief and an acceptance of outsiders. You could basically ask anyone any questions whatsoever and even if the receiver was put off You still had chance to make your case,...and win them over. 22 years there bore this out... Been in Eastern PA for 11 years. Allentown to Philly. Although knew Pikes County people as a child in NW New Jersey. Wasn't consequential then But as an adult who is absolutely not Americana back woods Yes,extremely consequential. For instance 7.3 years in Philadelphia and art scene mostly,for that matter and still often find myself in very awkward social situations,40 to 60% of the time,any class or race. Conclusion: I am very approachable,amiable but won't allow my personality to be usurped or maladapted away from my core character which is what most do.. "Sell out". Oh I understand you,them you the commentator,but I am just a straight dead on but tactful person. With no desire to adopt a mask of a place as often newcomers do. Why throw away 47 years of myself for PA? But that's how they would have it in the inwardly gate and character composure I witness every day in Philadelphia. Yes exceptions aboud but in PA it's an Olympic Triathlon of social pivots just to stay intact .. Very gossipy,side eyeing,cold sholuldering,chronically sarcastic subcultures here. But yes a beautiful state physically with loads of career opportunities. Very unforgiving social landscape though. A few of my Philadelphian raised true middle classers of the Philly intelligencia agee Beautiful place,tough sell if you are a participant but not a Joiner.. Great vid!! My points to all of this are several, One great Video,very funny concept. Two yes PA is extremely varied in accents,traditions etc. 3

JohnCandyesque, heartwarming, and PS, Jerry and Son (West Nanticoke), and the Park Market (Nanticoke-Proper) make the region's best "Kielbossi". It is now time to "down-Da-Boilo" then act like a tourist in Polish Markets while purchasing 50 'rings of smoked' (kielbasa), with my cousin, just to hear the locals in each-and-every butcher shop stop conversing in English, then switch to (either) Polish or Slovak. We're 'gossip-mining', you-see, did I mention that we are fluent in both languages?? It's precious to see the looks on everyone's face as we translate some of that gossip into (spoken) English, bid them farewell, then inform them that we're heading over to "Stookies" for da barbecue sammies. Eh, and maybe da Tilbury for da 'swingset show'. Pray I don't get "da ooze" again!!

"Heynabonics" is actually a local variation of the Inland Northern ("Great Lakes") accent, very similar to white accents in places like Buffalo, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit and Milwaukee. It is distinct from but related to the North Central ("Upper Midwestern") accent.

I grew up in the Heights of W-B, in the 60's.. Many of the older people spoke this way. This is a classic video. I get back to "da Valley" very infrequently now, but I haven't heard any Heynabonics in a while. It might be fading out, or perhaps I'm not listening well. My wife makes fun of me - I still say "myan" instead of mine! LOL. Good ole Wyoming Valley / NE PA.

Old people from the 60's? In '78 my family moved to Mocanacqua when I was a young kid. I saw someone "downtown" who asked, "Long time no see, henna"? I had no clue what language she was speaking, but was pretty sure it wasn't English. lol

Haha! I'm here from a Facebook thread where we're discussing the slight variations of yins in different areas of PA. I'm from South Central PA. We don't say yus we say yuins and everyone eats hogmaw (hogmog), scrapple, and puddin. Anyone from areas of PA that can contribute about the specific way yins is used or differences in typical cultural foods in your area??
@grunk001
@grunk001 6 жыл бұрын
Yins and its close cousin, yuins is generally attributed to Pittsburgh, the home of the "gum band" (rubber band). They also go "donton" to go downtown. They live in a "hoss" (house). Here in Heynaville Central aka Scranton, yins is "youse" as in "youse guys".
