This nails it!!!! Don’t start the video the way you did…this is what the movie is!! Why is this idea so hard to find info on?!?

Yup!!! The film teeters on, then fully turns into the story Jack is writing that is being inspired by the Grady story and the circumstances they are currently in. Once the big sculpture is gone from the from the table and the typewriter is different we are fully in the story Jack is writing!!

This theory does not explain The Shining. It explains _one layer_ of The Shining. Everyone seems to get stuck on their favourite level of interpretation, and then, that's it, that explains the whole movie for them. This movie has to be understood as having multiple layers of meaning that all overlap and intersect to give the full understanding. The Jack's novel layer, is one level -- and, thank you for explaining that one, because I knew it had to be there but I didn't get how to put it together. But, there's also the layer of the hotel representing America; and, the layer of Wendy's psychological trauma and abuse. Put that together, and it gives you the big picture of SRA. Let me put forth a couple of question to you that help to demonstrate that this one theory cannot explain the whole movie: What does 237 mean? Kubrick already started using it in 2001. So, why does its use continue in this movie? What does Redrum mean? Kubrick showed us one aspect, but what is the murder that gives the rum that is red?

HI i this masterpiece is unique. And we see over and over and over..never get old. The misteriuos date of 1921 i think the genius of Stanley means that the humanity will get in to a crossrodad in the 2019 . Please invert the numbers, we never have a zero. We have number (1) and (9) a (2) and a (1) again. Kubrick had a very futuristic mind. He is talking about i time of revolution a new time of witches. He believe in Magick. Like Alan Moore, he invented V from Vendetta.

The problem with this theory is that it literally shows what Jack has been writing. But people who want to believe this theory will say, you're just watching what jack wrote and that everything is just Jack's imagination as he comes up with new ideas for his book. Also the " and ever and ever " parallel, is showing how the hotel is taking over Jack's mind, I don't think it's because Jack " the writer " is just coming up with it as he writes his book.

a remake of Haxan, adaption of Lovecraft or the Blood Meridian. Let alone all the original period pieces of world history he could explore. One of the modern directors I hope will have a long career

You can say a lot about this movie but I will never understand a couple of things: 1) Why did Hal kill Poole and not Bowman? 2) How did it know that Bowman would see Poole float away? 3) How Hal lost the whole other pot? Dod a asteroid hit it? 4) How did Hal know that Bowman wouldn't ask Hal to send the two other pods to get Poole.? 5) How did he know that Bowman would forget his Helmet?

If we consider only 2001 movie then it can be interpreted that Hal is testing his pilots and seeing what their reactions are to his games. Maybe testing to see if they can do what he asks of them without hesitation. When his jesture is interpreted as a malfunction and threatening to shut him off, then that is interpreted as a attack on the mission since the humans are shown to be unrelievable. If we take 2010 movie into account then Hal might have been trying to keep the secret of the mission from being exposed even to the crew itself. It knew that humans would not be able to keep a secret (of the mission) and so attacked them before the video message from Floyd was played as a precaution. My one issue with this is how did Hal knew that Bowman would see Poole.

This video essay deserves a lot more attention! It challenges common misconceptions and offers a fresh perspective. It's well thought out and brilliantly breaks down the nuances of subtle acting, which I've come to learn recently that many do not understand. Your analysis is engaging, and the well-chosen examples make it a fun, yet informative watch! Thank you!!

HAL ended up in a mobius loop. Here’s what went wrong. HALs purpose is the prompt distribution of information and if necessary being able to take over. He was told of the mission’s true purpose, however he was programed to keep this secret from Frank and Dave, the command crew. The 4 scientists were trained separately and put into cryo so they couldn’t tell Frank or Dave what was up. HAL was told cause he was fully capable of performing the mission autonomously if he had to. As he was programed at his core not to lie then told by the NACA to lie he essentially went crazy. First he killed Frank Poole, then he shut off life support to the cryo pods. It was only after Dave lobotomized HAL that that message had played. In 2010 Floyd was furious that they issued that order to HAL abuse he knew HAL would “ lose it”. In 2010 HAL redeemed himself however when Dr Chandra told him Discovery was likely to be destroyed and HAL told Chandra to go.

Well, Robert Eggers might have the talent for producing a movie but NOT for writing or directing.. I found The Northman long and boring, without a relevant story or anything making it worth watching. Movement on the screen, but that's it... I fear his upcoming versiopn of Nosferatu wil be the same thing.

I think Hal was testing Bowman to see if he was worthy of becoming the star child. Therefore, Hal’s destruction at the hands of Bowman was actually part of his plan.

Great theory! Jack looks different despite his clothes, more casual and bright in real life like a writer, and with a villain face as a character.

I honestly hate people who say “I wish this actor played this character or this director should direct this story” like just shut up. Intelligent people have more range and nuance than the boxes you force them into, I hope Eggers continues to make movies and doesn’t fall into the marvelisation of Hollywood where just because someone has done something (or in terms of actors; looks slightly like the character) they must always follow that same trend forever. Robert Downey Jr is a very good actor and has so much more of a range than Tony Stark but so many mentally underdeveloped adults keep posting shit like “Rumour that RDJ is returning to play Dr Doom” like shit tf up and stop over-polarising every little thing and making it easier and easier for AI to start taking over art because all the stories have to be the same formula and all actors have to correspond to some superhero or directors have to adhere to what an audience who hasn’t seen the movie wants and not what that director’s vision is
