Who is this dude that doesn't even wear a helmet? 8 minutes and 4 ponchos but don't know if any of them will fit over a helmet. Genius.

Ever hit a fire hydrant with your face or have you been hit head-on by a car at ~30mph? I have been. Both times, I was on a bicycle. I love bicycles. I do not love bicycling anywhere near cars - and there's no way to avoid that in my area unless I cart my bike to an isolated trail somewhere. My community is a southern suburb of Minneapolis and is not even kind of remotely geared toward bicycles. We have big sidewalks. God Bless anyone who would attempt to ride on the road - I've seen people do it and they are sitting ducks just begging for death. No exaggeration.

Excellent film. As a doctor I cycle commute to work and do home visits to my patients by bicycle. For some of my elderly, frail and lonely patients having their doctor turn up by bike is a real highlight! I incorporate cycling exercise into helping my patients as there are quite a few where they may have difficulty walking due to back, knee or hip problems but can cycle. Thanks for your films.

I once had a Dutch bike and I never thought: „my next bike will be a Dutch bike again“. I had so many different bikes in my life and I only once thought this way with a Brompton bike, even if I have a very good other bike, which has better gear, better load and allows me to drive hands-free…

I completely agree with everything you've shown on the video, my experience is exactly this. I've been cycle commuting in the UK for years, in normal everyday clothes, no lycra needed. I got myself a Brompton through my employer cycle to work scheme which has made for compact convenience as well as an excellent ride experience. Well done for representing us cycle commuters Patty you were excellent.

Man, I wished it was that easy. My daily commute is 20km one way. I have a small kid and am tired most of my days. I love cycling and am so happy and grateful to be doing it. However, my commute is really lonely, as I am traveling over countryside mostly, with no bike roads, but I am riding on the street. Man, am I tired and often just totally exhausted. It doesn't always make me happy...

I’m so lucky to have been born in the Netherlands: excellent safe bicycle infrastructure through the whole country. I love cycling, live in the city and don’t even have to own a car, which I don’t. I wish every country would adopt this approach to cycling.

This was a fantastic video, Tom! The benefits of cycling for transportation, even with ebikes, are truly extensive and compounding. In our household, we’ve experienced significant improvements in physical and mental health, as well as financial benefits.

I use a wire lock if I am just popping into ASDA for 5 minutes, any longer and I use the wire lock and a D lock. I cannot afford and do not want to carry a bolt cutter proof massive motorcycle chain. Remember - an angle grinder can cut through every single bike lock you own. If they want it badly enough they WILL take it. That's why I use multiple locks of different kinds and I tend to lock up my bike in the middle of busy places. It takes more time to work out how to get through 2 or 3 vastly different locks and to have to do that in front of shops and 100's of people? - Maybe that's how gangs roll in London but outside of major cities, nobody is going to do that.

I would love to bike commute to work. But I live in suburbia and 24 miles from my office with little to no bike specific infrastructure along the way. Even with a class 3 eBike legally topping out at 28 mph, it would take 1+ hours each way after factoring in stops etc.

Incidental activity is one of the reasons I love biking, especially as someone with ADHD, where I can get exercise that isn't boring and I don't have to go stare at a wall on a treadmill in the gym or something like that to feel active!

I like riding the bike to work once or twice a week, but fighting traffic is draining as well. So just once or twice is enough. When I retire I'm moving someplace not actively hostile to bikes so I can ride every day.

Thanks for this, Tom! One thing I'd say is I think the fixation with "bike commuting" is maybe something we as advocates need to reflect on. IMO the challenge is 2-fold: Many trips taken by bike are not to a workplace and work-from-home has reduced the number of people commuting. When we focus on commuting, we miss all the trips taken for all the other reasons which leads us to not see the whole picture - including kids biking to school or people using cargo bikes for daily life. Keep up the great work.

I've been struggling with this idea as well. I guess "utility biking" would be a better term. It's sad that we have to have a term at all, to be honest. Thanks for your feedback.

10:00 "as an introvert who hates joining things" 😂😅 that's me!! Great video, Tom! I look forward to more. I bought my new first bike in over 20 years and my first e-bike due to a big push from your channel and content 😊 The e-bike video from climate scientist Dr. Simon Clark made me think that biking to work rather than driving was positive for the planet and your videos made me see that it was possible for me! It's only 2-3 days per week, but seeing my bike's odometer tick up is really motivating.

I commuted for 5 years in my home city with one of the worst traffic of the world. It was the best feeling flying by a river of stopped cars on the side and knowing I didn’t have to stay in a car just getting angrier by the minute. Since working from home in a new city it’s been more difficult to keep the habit, but I’m trying to emulate the commute time by riding my bike in the morning. Kilos and weight also are being dropped!

As with all things correlational it is important to consider not all relationships are causal in nature, and not always the direction you expect. Not saying any of the conclusions are directly wrong, but to what extent people become happy and well adjusted by bike commuting, and to what extent happy and well adjusted people chose to bike commute, is not entirely clear. On that note, does anyone know if any controlled studies have been done on this? By controlled I mean where participants were chosen to do a specific type of commute, rather than having them make the choice themselves. Lastly some of the effects you cite seem to be related to bike commuting being uncommon. Where I live and bike commuting is as normal as any other form of transportation, there really isn't any shared sense of community among us bike commuters.

3:47 Was not expecting to see "my" car in the stock footage! (2011 Nissan Leaf, in blue). Edit: one downside: Some days, when I am breathing diesel fumes, I feel like i am taking one for the team. I suppose the studies discussed still show a net health gain despite the extra respiration of polluted air.

What I really dont understand is why USA bikes have mostly no covers around the wheels. They do biketours and all the water or mud flies up to their back and to their luggage they take with them. They are also the excited when they find out there are racks you can put on the front and back so you can transport more luggage. They sometimes put large backs under their saddles, in backpacks, very unconvenient. The dutch bike is for easy going. You sit straight up. No stress on your arms and hands, no stress on your neck. We can transport our darling on the back or other nice goodies. The stear is shoulderwide so you breath , can totally relax on the bike. Bringing us everywhere we want. The Netherlands is flat as a pancake so come to our country for bikevacations. We are nice people food is excellent, campings and hotels are great. We will always help when you are in trouble. No worries, come and enjoy the Netherlands.

I live in an older building where I frequently see my neighbours leaving or arriving by bike or on foot, so we all know each other and often stop to talk, we share food, borrow tools, it's a community. The new building next to us has underground parking and everyone leaves and arrives in their car. They drive out of the building, then they drive into their building. I don't know anyone's name or anything about these people. They probably do their shopping somewhere else, their friends live somewhere else, they are isolated from the community they live in. They're probably great people but I'll never know it because they drive out, then they drive back in.

The Dutch army used something similar to your noseless saddle between the wars, and I'm using it on my own bike. It's called the Lepper Hygra and although it takes time getting used to, once you do it's spectacularly comfortable (and without one's gentleman's vegetables getting squashed).

I agree with 8 gears for a commuter bike (a European one, that is; North Americans tend to use more sporty bikes): one to get going, and the other seven for various levels of resistance (either inclines or wind) seems to be the sweet spot. But I'd also argue for internal gears rather than derailers. There's a practical reason for that, as well: Shimano's Nexus 3 and Nexus 7 hubs are both quite bad. The 3 is a de facto 2-gear hub since the 3rd gear is waaaay to resistive, and I've seen so many 7's fail that I find them hard to recommend. The Nexus 8, however, is a work of beauty and while more expensive than the 7, it's also far less prone to failure. The Alfine 8 is more sophisticated still but there are apparently still some reliability issues. Of course there are other brands, but they usually are MUCH more expensive and far less common, which means that shops able to repair them can be rare. For commuting I would really warn against derailers: they get dirty and crunchy really quickly unless you clean them about every day, which you won't. I know you plan to, and you might keep it up for a week, but after that you'd rather tolerate a less than fluent experience than suffer brushing off the grime every day.

Yep, that sounds familiar. In early 2023 I went from running six days per week and cycling 2x7k five days per week, to just running six days per week (and walking 400m to work), and my VO2 max dropped by two points. That may not sound like a lot, but I could really feel it. I'm moving soon, and, as convenient as it has been to be able to walk to work in a few minutes, I really look forward to cycling 2x8k Monday to Friday. Yes, even in the rain.
