It looks to me that you blokes are making a lot of hard work out of what should be a very simple process. The 15-30 that I remember in my pre school days some 75 years ago always started by the 3rd or 4th pull up on the crank. If the engine is in good order with all settings correct, it will start with no problem. Remember they were not designed to be hard to start, and if they are, then start looking for the reason why. Have a look at the 10-20 on "Just a Few Acres Farm'' , that gives a good idea of the correct procedure. To avoid a possible broken thumb or worse when cranking, place your thumb along the index finger, then if the engine kicks back because the spark has not been retarded, the crank will come out of your hand and not take your thumb with it. If your 10-20 and 15-30 have the original magnetos, the impulse needs to be set manually. This is explained on the website ''Rebuiltmags.com''. Good luck and I hope the next time is a lot easier than what I've just seen.

The man in the grey camo shorts adjusted the choke or air intake restrictor. There is no compression release on the B model unstyled. An A model does. Our family had 2 B model and one A model. The A was a beast to start needing about twice as much arm torque even with open compression release.
