Since we model in 4mm = 1ft, 2mm static grass is 6" tall, so not really a nicely manicured lawn!!

Tapping the rail tops with a screwdriver does some magic - Jumps most of the loose bits off the sleepers and saves doing it manually. Nice tidy job however! Sand also worked better than I expected..

Fantastic! Love the video and excellent information. I am going to do something similar, but use the servo's to control the track switch points, and use LED's to represent the track that's been closed.

Your “project of passion” has turned an entry level toy into a model. I have one of these somewhere, and I had considered making it into a National Coal Board shunter. First thing I need to do is, lose and modify that exposed motor retaining spring, and maybe a tenderising conversion like I’ve seen recently on YT, by OO-Bill. Thank you for a job well done, and sending me off on a tangent to start another project😜

It might be the OO gauge equivalent to Triggers Broom but you made a pretty good job of it and as the saying goes it’s my railway so I’ll run what I want. Good video
@krazytroutcatcher

I had a Dublo 2-6-4 T that was like triggers broom, I had it handed down to me in the mid 70’s, but couldn’t run it as it was 3 rail, my brother converted it to 2 rail later using some Triang princess parts, but eventually the motor burned out. Sometime later, in the early 80’s, I hacked out the chassis with a hacksaw, and with car body filler I made an X04 motor mount and changed the axle gear to suit. It was crude, but it ran. By the 90’s, it had a Comet chassis with Romford wheels and five pole motor. By the 2000’s, the body had been stripped, etched brass and white metal detailing, another Comet chassis to P4 gauge, Alan Gibson wheels with coreless motor, resprayed in 2k satin black and Methfix decals. Foolishly, I sold my whole collection around 2011-12.

Nice video.. the loco looks great.. can't believe you didn't consider the condition of the track and the loco's wheels, especially with that bad misalignment of the track in the station, before buying a new chassis. Have you tried the old chassis since cleaning the track.
@FrontingtonandBackwoodsRailway
@FrontingtonandBackwoodsRailway Ай бұрын
It's a bit too late (and counterproductive) to go back to the old chassis now. And the new one is known to be superior.
@jamesbeckwith3639
@jamesbeckwith3639 Ай бұрын
@@FrontingtonandBackwoodsRailway I understand that it's too late and counter productive to go back to the old chassis with the model being finished, but just wondered how well the old chassis worked now that you've cleaned the track and if you had tried it. Only time will tell if the chinese version is any good, as the chinese version more or less ran the same as the 40 year old british version until you cleaned the track. I have an old Hornby/Triang 0-6-0 Jinty that came with the Battlespace set and has the original metal smoke unit that worked on a piston and the only thing that has been changed on it is the brushes and it still works well.

The GWR spent a lot of time turning their saddle tanks into pannier tanks (and occasionally vice versa). What would a pannier conversion of a Caley 0-4-0 look like?

Nice little project. As a note the Chinese chassis 0-4-0's do not have a different gearing, it is exactly the same, all that they have done is fit a lower RPM motor - 10,000 if my memory is correct. The old UK built ones had motors with a considerably higher RPM!

You've given me inspiration to do something similar with my first loco, a 90s Hornby 'Queen Mary' red 0-4-0 from the Freight Hauler set. Though I run DC so it may get a new coreless motor. P.S. Did a quick google of the Dowalis D Class and found out she was rebuilt from an 0-4-0 to and 0-6-0 so might be looking around for a suitable chassis! 😂

That's quite a neat rebuild. Not too different, indeed, from some of the engines the GWR inherited from lines such as the Swansea Harbour Trust. Quite what the O16.5 and other branches of the narrow gauge fraternity would do without 'Desmond / Smokey Joe' I don't know. Have a look in 'Narrow Lines' magazine, or Smallbrook Studios website, and see what I mean I once built a Chatham steam railmotor using the mech, fitted with 'proper' crossheads and cylinders - the improved appearance was immense. At present I run two of the bodies, mounted on 12mm gauge chassis, s 3 foot gauge industrials, and they look great.

Bit of a rollercoaster with the chassis/chip thread - I used to go cheap with my decoders, but now I only go with Zimo to never have to worry aobut it! AK Ultra Matte is great for painting onto smokeboxes, if you wanted to varnish for one reason or another, to bring it back to pure matte finish.

This is amazing although I have noticed some things that may be slightly incorrect but don't quote me on any of this, I don't work for the railway I am just a signalling nerd lol. From what I can tell you have no way of going directly from the inner homes to the goods siding (I do see the interlocking allows for this although that seems peculiar) I would put a shunt disc adjacent the inner homes to allow such a movement. Additionally the plates on the levers (normally called lever leads I believe) will show all movements possible for example signal 5 can go either to the up main or to the engine shed. On the lever lead it would show as 6, 11, 14 OR 6, 11, 12 Finally with the diagram (although I am unsure as to what style this diagram is) I would show that those points at the end of the loop are hand points, normally from what I have seen it is simple an arrow point to the point saying either "Hand Points" or "HP" or sometimes it is even just a line through the point although that is more seen with thinner track. this website www.lymmobservatory.net/railways/sbdiagrams/sbdiagrams.htm is very good for diagram references especially older styles (although it has a few more modern ones). also this website www.roscalen.com/signals/index.htm is good for signal references and it has a few interior shots of some signal boxes. and these videos kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fauHpM6L1ry2Z6M.html are very nice for general signal box things. sorry for dumping so much information lol, you're layout is very nice and I can't wait to see the signals being placed down.

It's shaping up great so far! It goes to show what you can do with a limited budget to make a reasonably convincing and well running locomotive. I think the only things you have missed is the lamp iron brackets on either side of the cab near the roof (that's what the lumps are supposed to represent, and would likely have been removed as soon as it arrived in Swindon), and cleaning up some of the moulding lines. Personally I would have gone a little further for "Swindonification", opting for the handrail posts on the tanks and above the smokebox door, replacing the pair of Ross pop safety valves and dome with a full brass bonnet or a variation thereof, and disposing of the CR hooter whistle for a pair of GWR ones that you can prize off a junked 2721 or 1400. Can't wait for the next instalment
