Salamat po sir for showing the use of the balisong as it was intended to be.. primarily as a self defense weapon.. the utility function being secondary.. western culture abhorrence to violence had relegated this famed Batangas weapon to a toy ..concentrating more on fancy flipping twirling .. opening and closing.. neglecting its self defense function. The late great Hari ng Balisong of PH cinema Danny Labra showed how to open/close for quick deployment in knife fighting. Salamat po muli as you have been very informative..

The spiked RnD was originally designed for use in Sayoc Kali by Rafael Kayanan and works wonderfully for this purpose. However, for use by Tier 1 units, the reality is, a tomahawk without a spike serves a much more useful purpose. RnD’s are all the rage because of Terminal List, but if you look at the Tier 1 hawks, they do not have spikes. We’ve all heard the axiom, don’t bring a knife to a gunfight. True enough… actually fighting with a tomahawk or edged weapon in a kinetic environment is the stuff of movies.

@RolandoEstocada
@RolandoEstocada 5 күн бұрын
Filipino Swords are VERY formidable and battle-tested! The bowies are custom from the forge of the late and legendary Bill Bagwell. He, along with Master at Arms James Keating, is the main proponent of what is now the modern Bowie Combatives movement.

There isn’t much of a stand off, dueling type of use for this. Not in combat, and anyone using this will find himself in very close range to his opponent. The short, flicky cuts, that’s not really functional. You wouldn’t use a hammer like that, and this tomahawk is like a crossbreed between a hammer and an icepick. The shape of the handle is in part derived from icepicks. It’s meant to dig in and stick so you can pull on it, it’s not a great cutting blade and the angle of the edge does not lend itself to cutting and slicing out of the target. When you train with a person, and I have one aluminium trainer from Sayoc and a light polymer trainer from Tuhon Felix Cortes (discontinued), you realize what it is good for. It’s like a grappling hook and it’s great for digging in behind the neck, over the traps and clavicles, the hip crease, in the fold of the elbows and knees etc. You don’t stand off and throw extended strikes with it, you simply smash and pull and move the body around and down. Finishing with it is simply cracking the coconut..
@RolandoEstocada
@RolandoEstocada 6 күн бұрын
I have an upcoming video that covers exactly what you are talking about. Stay tuned! 🙏🏽🔥👊🏽
@Chiburi
@Chiburi 6 күн бұрын
I would add that the top section of the handle is great for drawing the hawk from it’s sheath and punch cutting, but you would punch cut horizontally, palm down, to the throat or face, then post the butt of the hawk on your hip and regrip down the handle to follow up with leveraged strikes. You can also strike with the butt, holding the pistol grip section and power assisting with one palm over the top of the blade.

@@Chiburi thank you these are great details! Interestingly I’m editing the upcoming videos with a few of the things you are describing! Definitely, I enjoyed your vids on these Winkler RnD hawks. I do also have one and have a found similar experiences on what you found in what each weapon tells you. Not too many people nowadays explains the why/purpose of the design features found in a weapons designs. This led me to design my own variants of a fighting hawk. My first design, I named it “The Multo”. I borrowed design aspects from the Igorot head axe, but with a multi-functional handle. My newest design is called “The Yokai”. This has a different style of blade, meshing the Kunai with a Spontoon blade. It too has an evolution of my multi function handle. If you want to see them, I have short vids on my KZfaq page.

Thank you for taking the time to look at them. I designed them to complement my skillsets learned from Serrada Escrima, Silat Suffian Bela Diri and Muay Thai. Both my Multo and YoKai are balanced at the middle of the handle, so you can do broken strikes easily and change hand positions without over committing.

@@RolandoEstocada @markstallman Put it so well I can only say good job to him and I second this comment! I thought after seeing your obvious appreciation for Winkler’s work, you would appreciate knowing that Daniel Winkler & his wife are as nice as they come! Just wonderful people! I got to first meet them in 2001 if memory serves me correctly. When I was 22, I was working in my favorite place to spend to much money, Nordic Knives, when they were in Solvang California; they later moved to Boise Idaho, where they still have a wonderful shop. They are authorized dealers of Winkler Knives, Randall Knives, & Chris Reeve Knives, as well as many great brands, and they have one of the best selections of Custom knives, from the best knife makers in the world. They had an annual knife show with 60 of the best makers in the world, one of them was Daniel Winkler. I couldn’t speak highly enough of him & his wife, as well as Dave Harvey & his wife who own Nordic Knives. It’s easy to do, so if you find something you can’t live without on their website, tell them Nick sent you their way and asked you to give his greetings to them. Sorry for the ramble, but I thought you might enjoy knowing that Daniel Winkler makes knives almost as nice as he is. Thank you for the great video.
