Aside from the noise, you shouldn’t use an impact driver (or worse an impact wrench) on your stabilizer jacks because the impacting force will rattle the pivot points loose making your jacks are sloppy and not stable.

Great video and some excellent lessons learned. Meanwhile at the other end of the globe in Australia, we have some pretty tough road conditions as well. What I do with screws and nuts and bolts is loosen the screw or nut off just a touch and apply a drop of Loctite or SuperGlue then tighten them up. I’ve never had an issue after that.

While watching some of your video's yesterday I noticed you might have uneven tire wear on one of your tires. The video was, Did the Alaskan Highway break our trailer. At the 4.05 minute mark it looks like the inside part of the tire is wearing faster than the outside but this does look to be on the drivers side.

Thanks very much Debbie. When we crossed into Alaska they specifically asked about firearms and firewood. Canadian agents asked about weapons, alcohol and value of goods being imported ( the latter because we were Canadians returning home). Neither border crossings had any questions about food nor was our trailer searched. We found both the US and Cdn agents to be polite, courteous and even friendly. We had passports at the ready and glasses and hats removed. Those first few seconds of interaction can make all the difference. Hope you have an amazing trip! Safe travels!!

Hi Scott, thanks very much. Re driving times that really is a tough question as it varied widely. Driving across Canada to the start of the Alaska Hwy we did push it a bit, on the road by 7 but stopped for the night by 4 so dinner and the evening could be relaxing. Once on the Alcan we slowed down…a lot. We’d still get on the road early but would take frequent stops … just to take things in. Speeds were much slower and we tried to be parked by 3. Of course that didn’t always happen , in part due to construction delays. But some days we only drove 4 hours getting to our destination early. We enjoyed those days and it gave more time for exploring. Im sorry the answer isn’t more clear but driving times each day really did vary. Ill just finish by saying this is an epic road trip.. so give your self time to enjoy the journey. Safe travels!

Terry -- Sorry to hear about your bent axle. Any thoughts on how/when it happened? Also, nice that Dexter sent you a new axle at no cost for the part. Did you submit a warranty claim, or did they just do it out of the goodness of their hearts (and your visibility on KZfaq)?
@TrueNorthCamping
@TrueNorthCamping 4 ай бұрын
Hi Barry, a couple of good questions there. Your last one is easy. Dexter definitely was NOT influenced by our youtube channel. We aint that famous 😉 and in fact we didn’t even mention it to them. Regarding a warranty claim - yes we made one and Dexter reviewed our case and replaced the axle. As for how the axle got bent, we don’t know with certainty. It didn’t happen on our trip to Alaska as the uneven tire wear didn’t start until the next camping season - which was after our dealer did some warranty work that required jacking the trailer. Im not accusing the dealer of jacking the trailer incorrectly, just pointing out the timeline of the axle failure. I will say we have been very impressed by the ride and performance provided by the Dexter Torflex axles (and reduced sway they seem to provide) and were quite pleased with how Dexter handled the problem.

Terry/Cindy -- Thanks for the suggestions as to planning and preparation. We also have a Rockwood 2109S and were very interested in how yours held up. Noted your stories about loose screws and dust through the wheel wells, so plan to take advantage of your experience and locktite as much as we can in advance of the trip, as well as trying to seal up the wheel well seams as you did. Your addition of the rock shield from Rockstar also caught my attention! One thing I didn't see in your description was any detail on your truck. It obviously was a RAM, but what model, payload and towing capacity?? After viewing a number of videos on these subjects, specifically how some people inadvertently overload their vehicle, I'm getting a little paranoid as to whether we have the right vehicle to tow a 2109S in those conditions. Your thoughts?
@TrueNorthCamping
@TrueNorthCamping 4 ай бұрын
Hi Barry, I completely understand your concerns about towing capabilities/capacities. Our truck was a 2021 ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi engine and the 3.92 rear axle. We dont have that truck anymore so I cant give you exact numbers but the towing capacity was over 11000 lbs (thanks to the 3.92) and payload was approximately 1400 lbs. Obviously the 2109s only weighs 4400 lbs dry or near 6000 fully loaded so we were absolutely fine on towing capacity (just over 50%) but we would have been close to our maximum payload with the extra gear we were carrying in the truck. We did add Timbrens that really helped eliminate the squat Rams are notorious for but they also make the loaded ride kind of harsh. We never felt the truck struggled at all, regardless of mountain grade. Having said all that, if we had any MiniLite other than the 2109s we'd want a 2500 series truck. Depending on the specific truck's capabilities (especially payload) I think many 1500s can handle the 2109s....but having said that, you could never go wrong with a 2500 (gas or diesel) for towing. And while everyone likes the incredible torque the diesel gives, a 2500 gasser will likely have much more payload capacity due to the lighter engine...not to mention a more affordable price;) Im sorry I cant offer better advice but I would suggest that if you think you might be over your payload or towing capacity, its worth getting your rig scaled/weighed. Or just go buy the 2500 and then you dont have to worry...lol. I hope this has helped a bit. Have an amazing trip!

@@TrueNorthCamping Hi Terry -- Many thanks for your quick, helpful and complete response. We have a 2018 F150 with 5.0L engine and 3.55 rear end. Payload is 1679 lbs with towing capacity of 10,000 lbs. To be honest, when we got it I was only looking at the high towing capacity, but have since come to realize (thanks to KZfaq) that the payload gets maxed out long before the towing capacity. And, when we recently bought the 2109S I was only looking at the near-6000 lb loaded weight. Like you, I thought we'd be only at 60% of the towing capacity, so would be fine. However, I have since learned that the loaded tongue weight of this model trailer can run over 850 lbs, which takes up over half of the payload (note that Rockford advertises this as 557 lbs in the literature, I believe measured without batteries, water and, perhaps, even empty LP). Bottom line is that with two adults, two dogs, a generator, tools, and a couple mounted spare tires, we are over the 1679 lb payload. As I told my wife, lots of times things are actually engineered in excess of the quoted payload spec, so I wouldn't expect the extra pound of loading it to 1680 lbs (or slightly more) would break anything, but running at the limit anywhere (towing capacity, payload, axle rating, etc.) can't be completely mechanically healthy over the long run. Agree that I certainly wouldn't want to tow anything larger with an F150, but we're stuck with it for now. Will take your advice to head for a CAT scale to confirm what's on the axles once I have the trailer in hand. Again, thanks for sharing your experience(s). All the best, Barry

Terry -- One last question re. the Uni-Strut reinforcement of the fresh-water tank. Did you subsequently run the trailer on your TOTW trip with full (or mostly-full FW tank)?
@TrueNorthCamping

Hi Barry, yes we did. Unless we knew we had reservations at a campground with hookups where water would be available, we traveled with a full ( or mostly full) tank. On the ToTW Hwy we had planned to boondock near the border, so tanks were full.

Well done!! We drove the Dalton Highway last summer (2023) from Fairbanks to Deadhorse pulling a single-axle Jayco trailer. Other than constant efforts to keep all the drawers and cabinets closed (we also used bungees), a broken fresh water drain valve (plugged with a tree branch whittled to size), a water heater that refused to operate with LP, and a problematic trailer/truck plug that decided not to recharge the trailer batteries, we had few problems on our 10,500-mile trip until halfway down the Stewart-Cassier Highway, where we "almost" threw one of the trailer tires. The lug nuts had vibrated loose to the point that the wheel had been wobbling (don't know how long) and the lug bolts themselves had worn almost through. Had to drop the trailer at Meziadin Junction and drive south to find new lug bolts. After a 450-mile day searching, we found some in Terrace that would work, though needed to scrounge an angle-grinder back in Meziadin to make the heads fit. I learned a lesson that just performing a walk-around each day was not enough -- I'm henceforth committed to checking the lug nuts each day as well. Question for you: We have a newly-purchased Rockwood 2109S too (!), and plan to go back and drive the Dempster to Tuktoyaktuk this summer (2024). Am inexperienced with this model so am impressed that you felt the need to reinforce the fresh-water tank supports underneath. I have subsequently seen elsewhere on the Internet that you were very wise in doing that, since the trailer's structure was never designed to carry full 54-gal tanks, especially on rough roads. Interesting! I'd guess that the majority of trailer-folk would assume that if the tank was 54-gal, it would be engineered to carry that much volume FULL. Again, seeing the mod you made to reinforce that tank, I'd be inclined to duplicate it. Could you tell me what parts you used (and sources)? Many thanks in advance.
@TrueNorthCamping
@TrueNorthCamping 5 ай бұрын
Thanks Barry. That sounds like a harrowing experience with the lug nuts! Glad you caught it in time!! Re the tank reinforcements, we used a product called Uni-strut. You cab buy it at some big box home supply stores (Lowes/HD) or just about any electrical supply shop. They should have the clamps too. We also sprayed the struts with bed liner (much tougher than paint) prior to install. There is a Rockwood MiniLite/Flagstaff MicroLite Group on Facebook with quite a few posts about the support install. If youre not already a member it might be worth joining and doing a quick search there. Hope this helps. Have an amazing trip!!
