the biggest difference is, in my opinion, with a pension your money goes into someone's "pot" and you get paid an annual amount, when you die the pot is gone, with ISA's you are always in control, and is passed on after your death

I'm a little confused by the data that's being shown. Wasn't there a roughly 40-year period at times of WWII where there were no stock market returns at all with bad timing?

If you think of an annuity as going to the bookies and making a bet on how long you're going to live the utility becomes clear. The insurance company can offer you odds based on the average lifespan of people like you. Any DIY version doesn't give you that longevity insurance benefit.

Useful breakdown. A question - if one has a lump sum to invest (in ETFs), it better to put it all in one go, or to stagger the payments/investments (a la dollar cost averaging)?

I’m under standing this drawdown but I’m with strachclyde pension scheme which is deffered pension scheme as far as I’m aware that’s pension for live can I choose to take less from that kind of scheme or does need to be private only. I’ve also got AVCs up and running along side that plus I’ve just started my savings journey at 43 where in think I can save £6000 comfortably per year.

What I don’t get or no bank properly explains if I have 20k from 2023 at 4% interest and it matures going into 2024 what happens with the 20k I had in 2023 do I get to put that cash into 2024 pot and that 2023 cash gains 2024 interest rates along with my new allowance I don’t know how many finance channels I ask this question but none reply, if my 2023 cash goes into to a lower interest saving isa pot I’d rather just save in high heading savings account

Until recently FTSE100 growth over past 25 years was around 10%, of late it's closer to 25%. That's not even covering the inflation! S&P500 has more than 400% and NASDAQ records even higher over the same period. I find your conclusion favouring FTSE100 perplexing! I've disregarded dividends in above comparisons as capital growth has been my focus - blame taxation (and effort needed in working out dividends). UK investors pay 15% US tax on dividends, even if inside ISAs and SIPPs (I'm aware of one exception) so much rather free cash flow goes to grow the company or share buybacks to reward the investor - no effort on my part and no taxes to pay. Wall Street seems to prefer this too

I have no clue how stocks and shares work, ive mainly invested in gold coins for years and done pretty well. Im going to start investing, £500 a month into the developed world fund and not think about it for 20years, i no theres always risk but would that seem like a sensible move? Or do i need to monitor and possibly move money around over that time period, as thats what i want to avoid as my knowledge is zero?

It's one of those things if everyone is worried about it then it won't be a problem. If everyone is passive and not caring, it'll rear it's ugly head and smash us to pieces. Moderation and cautiousness will be the key to balance and patiently resolve our issue. HOWEVER under pressure from big corp who want interest free money, how long can our treasury hold it's rein? Plus with a new president after this election, who knows what will happen.

Cutting spending doesn't actually solve a debt problem, as it shrinks the economy. This one's got all kinds of evidence behind it, and it's getting to the point where we have to just say it's misinformation. You know what works really well to reduce debt? Taxing creditors. You know who's full of it in a debt crisis? Creditors. Our creditors are telling us that the solution is... more tax cuts for the wealthy. WOW! This one's a joke, guys. If the government can't tax wealth, you're going to have to get one that does. This is always how it's worked, this group of investors aren't the ones to have figured out how to make exponential growth relative to GDP indefinite. They can't even figure out that tax cuts increase debt. And, they've been spreading fraudulence on the topic for 4 decades. And, it amounts to a tax strike. Let's call a duck a duck, here.

If you are making your investment decisions based on the expectation of inflation and all else being equal. Normal times (expected inflation 2-5%), stable growth and moderate interest rates: Buy stocks, corporate bonds and real estate. Expected deflation (below 2%), interest rates are cut to simulate growth: Buy government bonds and hold cash as bond prices increases and cash now have increase purchasing power. Expected high inflation (above 5%), rising interest rates. money market funds are now more attractive with low risks.

Thanks! That seems like some very solid advice indeed. My strategy is to complement a global index fund with an emerging markets index fund and a couple of sector funds, because the MSCI World and S&P 500 are so skewed towards the American tech giants. My hope is that this will insulate me to some degree from a possible tech bubble burst.

Not one of your best , sadly, Ramin. a. Growth stalled for 4yrs after the Brexit vote, probably because the govt didn't make any changes worth mentioning, but sine 2020 has generally trended up at a similar rate to to pre-Brexit. b. House builders probably won't benefit from Labour plans to build more homes, because they'll be a lot less profitable if that were not the case they'd have been building more for years. c. Wind energy at around 30% is probably approaching full capacity given the lack of the technology to store and use it, building more wind turbines won't help. Solar? Not in the UK, have you stepped outside for the last six months! Nuclear is the only proven technology at the moment and they won't even start to do that because of the left/green wing of the party, not even allowing for the 10/15yr lead time for nuclear power stations. The increased Windfall tax on energy companies, tiny at about 2% above the existing levels, was baked in to UK shares prices months ago. .....and that was where I turned off. Sadly, we're due for a massive hit on Capital gains tax, wealth taxes, etc, even if Starmer isn't deposed by the extremists within months of the inevitable election win.

@pensioncraft I find the whole bond space unclear. I think it would help to understand a comparison to a SWR at 4% for a coupon 4% and the principal coming back online at the maturity date. The rest of the detail becomes too much information. In the case of Apple 20yr 4.45 how would GBP 10,000 relate in comparison to 10,000 over 20yrs but drawn down from say a 500,000 pension

Thanks Ramin, I’m a beginner investor, I started in December, and I’m changing my tack having learned from your and another couple of KZfaq channels Firstly, I’m sorting my pensions, moving from SJP and Fidelity to Invest Engine. Secondly, I’m selling many of my stocks and putting them into an ETF. anything (Barclays, BT) that has grown massively is getting sold, anything where my holding is small is going. I’m holding onto a few that I think will grow over the next couple of years (NG., VODA, STJ), but eventually they will be sold as well, and I’m keeping my moonshot (TMC) I’m self employed, and I’ve found I spend far too much time looking at T212 instead of earning the money to invest. Hopefully this helps and I can be more productive as a result

If you invested in the Vanguard global small cap index fund wouldn't that avoid the bid offer spread. It appears to have a Lower fund charge than ishares etf that tracks the same msci global small cap index. Personally I don't think it's worth it as you are just taking on volatility risk for most likely no extra returns
