The idea that China should have sovereignty over those islands, which are WAY TOO FAR FROM THEIR COAST, is stupid and makes no sense.

Listening with interest to this and then I heard him say, “sitting on what is essentially dead coral”. Now I am distracted and concerned wondering what is becoming of our oceans and its inhabitants?

I love this documentaries. I always thought China was the unreasonable aggressor based on what I saw in mainstream media, but I never realized how complex this dispute is.

Here's one cool detail, the name of the historical document China referenced for its claim - Yiwu Zhi 異物誌 literally means "archive of the strange and foreign things" as in things that are strange and foreign to China. So that means the reefs are .... get this... not Chinese.😂

15:00 It's really interesting how the subsequent US+Phillippines vs China Naval Standoff was left out. Western media and English language cyberspace in general had and still has been conveniently silent. However, it is rather convenient that after the arbitration, the US Navy USPACOM Adm Harry Harris Jr was retired and made Ambassador to S Korea.

Cultural context: The concept of a "nation" with "borders" was generally not present historically in China, or more precisely, among the Hans and their predecessors. This is why a lot of the Chinese government's arguments and doings seems so alien and forced in the West! Whereas Western history often has events of a country *claiming*, *colonising*, or otherwise determining ownership / governance over a specific piece of land, this was not the case historically in China, and so translating related concepts presents a massive cultural challenge, even though modern China has obviously (needed to) adapt to the same Western mindset on territories.

just from the fact that china needed to do reclaimation on these places and artificially put a fuckton of shit on it literally invalidates all their claim that they've always been there, they aren't. its not really a dispute with 6 other countries, since each of the claimants potision is a bit more nuanced and then there's the chinese that wanted to hog all the sea. and all the hauge's ruling did was disillusion people here to what extent does its ruling can be enforced when larger nations can just use a might makes right logic and disregard "law". so law only applies on smaller nations? bullshit.

China claims James Shoal to be the southern most point of their territory, which it’s not even above the sea level. I am not sure how they manage to push this down to every Chinese national’s throat. Gonna be some next level mental gymnastics.

Somewhat lacking. No mention of the efforts at multilateral resolution of disputes via the efforts are forging a Code of Conduct for the South China Sea, and the power dynamics that have hampered those efforts. Also it doesn't explain how the ASEAN claimants have been cordial with one another on the matter for years.

We Are in Unchartered Financial Waters! every day we encounter challenges that have become the new standard. Although we previously perceived it as a crisis, we now acknowledge it as the new normal and must adapt accordingly. Given the current economic difficulties that the country is experiencing in 2024, how can we enhance our earnings during this period of adjustment? I cannot let my $680,000 savings vanish after putting in so much effort to accumulate them.

Keeping some gold is usually a wise decision. You would be better off keeping away from equities for a bit or, even better, seeking advice from an expert given the current market conditions and everything that is at risk with the current economy.

You have a very valid point, I started investing on my own and for a long time, the market was really ripping me off. I decided to hire a CFA, even though I was skeptical at first, and I beat the market by more than 9%. I thought it was a fluke until it happened two years in a row, and so I’ve been sticking to investing via an analyst

The modern day Taiwanese government does not claim the entirety of the South China Sea, and comparing them to China is disingenuous at best. They are legally forced to hold the exact same land claims as the CCP, due to the international one country, two systems framework. Taiwan does not send military vessels there, they don't attempt to colonize or patrol them, and they don't argue internationally that they have a rightful claim to them.

One would think, on the simplest and irrefutable logic, that proximity of the islands seems to close the case on who owns what. Yet, these countries except the Philippines expand their control far beyond reasonable logic and use the rule of dibs to justify their bullish behavior.
