Can we have 24 bit float? I think I've heard of it being used somewhere. There is surely enough DR in 24 bits for it.

Can this be plugged into the Mono XLR Input on a mixer (with a 3.5mm to XLR Adapter + Extension Cable). Do you think it will suit this application?

For half the price of the Sennheiser, the AT 4053b is my go to indoor mic. Compared to my Rode NTG3 indoors, it is quite a revelation. I am not a pro, at this point, so... I have not had any complaints about the sound of either mic.

Here's something I struggle with all the time (well, way too often); a DO who basically ignores the boom operator. If I don't have a monitor, which is almost always, I cannot tell when the mic is in the frame. Please work with me, and tell me before we shoot, when my mic is in the shot, OK? I get very, very, very tired of DPs not doing that, even when I ask, then getting angry when a take is ruined because the mics in the frame. Spend 30 seconds, work with me when I ask how close I can get, OK? I can line up with something on the wall, or a tree or building outside. If the DP does this, then we actually save time. I won't stomp off set if you yell at me because the mic is visible, but I will grumble at you under my breath.

I think you should compare apples to apples. The SM58 uses a step-up transformer inside to boost its output.. the SM7,A,B does not.

Excellent advice, Curtis! Sure, there are some legitimate reasons as to why you might need to upgrade gear, but more often than not, you really need to step back and ask yourself if it's going to solve any real problems and are these "problems" real or just perceived? Heck, I'm just as guilty of Gear Acquisition Syndrome as the next guy! More often than not, the answer is just improve your technique and learn to better use the gear you own right now. Great commentary/content as always!

Wow! Thank you, Curtis! I've been looking to add streaming services to my list of offerings, and this is perfect timing. I just received the Osee HDMI/SDI switcher/streamer, but it's still in the box while I figure out how to use it. Thank you so much! I took your course on Adobe Audition years ago, and I still use everything I learned in that video to this day!

When would the extra 18db be used ? How often have you used the extra db that a recorder like the mixpre 10ii has over the mixpre 6ii? I will be also using the dpa 4017b in the future for outdoor work and dpa 6060

I think you’re referring to the addition gain from the fader? Only when needed to boost the levels of a channel in a mix. I haven’t needed that often.

I have a bunch of recorders, but the X8 is probably the one I would keep if ai had to part all but one. It is a very good concept and gives you the most versaitility. A variety of inputs, a lot of ways you can attach mics to the recorder body. You also get a lot of functionality: it is a mixing board, a DSP processor, a mobile podcast studio. It can record 24 and 32 bit simultaneously. It has control apps for both iOS and Android. As audio interface it works both 24 or 32 bit now. Very- very close to perfect for my needs. And I am happy with the audio quality as well. Having said that I also have an F3 and an F8n Pro, and a few more. The X8 stacks up nicely. There are a few things in the software that could be improved on, but recording quality is on par. The only thing I find misleading is the headphone amplifier which is quity noisy. I thought it was preamp noise, but no, the recording is clean, just there is too much hiss in the headphones.

Hi Curtis, firstly, thank you for your amazingly useful videos. You are always my first port of call if I have a question. I have recently changed from a lav. Mic to the Rode NTG. I do painting tutorials with an overhead camera and I intend to have the NTG above my head. I am recording into a Zoom H5 using the XLR input. I am used to using the dials on the H5 to set my levels so that they don’t clip. Do I need to use the ‘gain’ control on the back of the NTG and if so, what does it do that the H5 is not doing already? I hope this makes sense. I have very little knowledge of using audio but have always managed up to now, probably more from luck! Thank you Curtis.

Excellent video, Curtis! Thank you for introducing me to this system. I was actually searching for a wireless transmitter/receiver setup for use with my MixPre 3 (original non-32-bit float version). I'm now wondering if the THEOS transmitter alone could completely replace the MixPre for non-timecode required applications where talent mobility via a discreet body pack would be needed. Especially since the THEOS has 32-bit float capability. Not sure if you have any thoughts on using the THEOS this way. Cheers!
@curtisjudd3 күн бұрын
Yes, this is designed to use that way. I would consider the preamps and converters of the MixPre are far superior.

Fantastic video Curtis. I think you hit the nail on the head about how things work AND how being succinct and respecting people’s time is not conducive to long term success within this current algorithmic landscape. I think moving the summary to the end is a great idea and will hopefully improve watch time and get your incredible content in front of more eyes.

I have used the Tascam in my sound work all the time. TBH, I prefer the sound of a shotgun mic, but what I tell my clients is I love giving them a choice; so I mic up the talent with the Tascam and boom mic the scene. I love redundancy. I have never heard any complaints about the sound from the Tascam. Wonder why Tascam doesn’t give full power to the lavs. Maybe cost, maybe as you said, they've optimized their lavs. I agree, the Tascam lavs are fine. Also, they take a fair amount of abuse. I don't baby my equipment.
