You don't recommend different grades of pencils and only work with one single pencil shows how much you know
@wileyvangoghАй бұрын
Thanks for your input. But some would say it’s how little I know… I only use a pencil for sketching or drawing the outlines of a watercolor. If you only draw for the sake of drawing, a set of pencils of different hardness values may suit you better.
@Gma77882 ай бұрын
Graphite looks silver when it reflects the light. Your drawing is supposed to look like shiny silver art. You haven't layed down enough material. You're too light with your pressure on the lead when it's touching the paper. You have to reach the minimum standard for applying the lead to the paper. The pencil manufacturers give you a sample shading for each pencil. Once you can reach the minimum requirements that becomes the zero point and a blank sheet of paper it at level -100%. Graphite drawings reflect light all over and they appear to be like shining silver. You hold your pencil down at the end cause you need lots of pressure so you can put down enough lead to meet the minimum requirements set out by the manufacturer. What you think is the Graphite is actually the binder material and the Graphite can only be seen in the light reflections. You must put down a thick layer so your whole drawing can reflect the silver image.

Thanks for your input. I only use pencils for sketching or laying out a drawing for a painting. So yes, if you are seriously into just drawing, the sets of different pencils are better suited. My video is solely to show the many different drawing materials available.
@Gma77882 ай бұрын
I'm your doomsday spoiler. You're going to really hate me. You're doing it all wrong. There's a minimum layer of material that you're required to put down on the surface in order to meet the minimum requirements set down by the manufacturers. Your layers don't get close to meeting the minimum requirement. You've got to put down lots of material to reach the manufacturers examples for those pencils. You can test to see if you've put down enough material to meet the minimum requirements by tilting your paper towards the light and the graphite will bounce the light off the surface. To see the graphite you must put down a thick layer of pencil lead and hope the manufacturer has done their job of calculating and mixing correctly. You must put down enough material with enough firm pressure to meet the manufacturers shading specifications. Your pencil marks and layering is too thin and delicate. You don't meet the minimum requirements for those pencil shades. You've put down some binding agent but not enough graphite. Graphite drawings reflect sunlight. They are beautiful things to look at. The more graphite the more brilliant the sunlight reflections.

You are correct in what you have stated, but those kinds of details are for artists that produce drawings to be seen an drawings and not in preparation for a painting in which they would be covered by paint. I do appreciate the beauty of finished graphite, chalk or silverpoint drawings, but it’s not my goal, i just draw to prepare for paintings.

Yes, 2B is all that I use. Press lightly for light values, press firmly for dark values. It’s so simple, I don’t understand why anyone would need a set of pencils with different values, it’s confusing to me.

Yes, sometimes artists forget how long it took them to learn to improve their work. I want folks to know that sometimes paintings just turn out poorly, and that you can learn to make changes to improve the paintings. And sometimes it means going in an entirely new direction, as seen in this series of 3 videos. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

When I feel that a painting is boring, I ask myself some important questions: 1) Do I have an interesting composition or is it too symmetrical, 2) do I have a focal point (point of interest), 3) do I have a good range of values (lights and darks), 4) does the painting have a clear light source which helps describe the forms and creates drama, 5) if it’s a landscape, does it have a sense of depth? All of these things are useful for critiquing my work and making the improvements needed.

Hairspray is a very good fixative for charcoal and pastels. I used to use it when I was at university, the cheapest seemed to work the best. I always used the strong hold variety, a lot more cost effective.
@wileyvangogh4 ай бұрын
Yes, it is, and hairspray is cheaper than fixative, and works just as well, my only concern is any long term damage that may occur to the paper from the chemicals. BUT that is likely a concern even with the commercially available fixatives. Which is one of the reasons that some artists do not use any kind of fixative. Of course this means that pastel dust will drop from the paper, especially when drawings are framed. And if you frame with acrylic, static will pull pastel dust from the paper to the acrylic.

Staedtler erasers suck. Faber CAstell 187120 and Tombow Dust Catch, or Mono plastic, ,even Pentel Light, all are far superior. KUM Sharpeners, aliminate the need and the mess sandpaper creates. No other paperstump, comes close to Conte Paris ones. The blend way smoother, without leaving a muddy look on the blended graphite. (Tip All these stumps, must be prepared with sandpaper, before use, it's not just for cleaning them). No other kneadable eraser, comes close to the performance and versatility, of LYRA kneadable eraser. No other graphite, is as good for drawing, as is Faber Castell pencils. It's actually pencil ✏️ drawing that's well below the minimum requirements from pencil manufacturers. These pencil marks are not thick enough to reach the minimum requirements set out by the manufacturers. Graphite drawings reflect sunlight. They look like shining silver light reflections. Most people don't put down a thick enough layer of lead onto the paper. To meet the minimum requirements a layer of pencil must be very thick.
