I’ve always been fascinated by reindeer/caribou. I remember seeing them regularly on a reindeer farm near where I live for many years in northeast Oregon and then I have some experience being around wild ones in Alaska (yes I was hunting). I’m entertaining ideas of raising them myself one day. That or Fallow Deer, but then I’ve spoken with one guy about how much of a hassle it is to be able to raise Fallow Deer in Oregon (getting permits). It would be for entertainment purposes. My wife and I will inherit a decent amount of land and would like to raise something on it.

I’m sure there are plenty of forage alternatives you could use instead of buying expensive feed. They can survive from chewing lichen and frozen moss off granite boulders in the artic, finding forage would be easy

The donkeys DO have such funny personalities! We’ve noticed they get a lot louder in the colder months too! They bray a lot more often for some reason. At least ours do! They are so funny! I love to watch them play from our front window in the evenings especially!

So pretty there! This may be a dumb question and I apologize now. Do roosters taste different than the hens? I guess I’ve never really thought about it before… 😳😂. Thanks!
@HappyBurrowHomestead7 ай бұрын
Hi there! Thanks so much! It’s not a dumb question! They taste the same but roosters are bigger usually. If you let them grow out longer, they can be tougher in general so they are better for soup if they are older chickens 😁

I was also given two mini donkeys. I LOVE them!! One is gelded, the other a mare. Im thinking of breeding the mare to another mini. Where can I find good research and resources? I’m in the mid-west, USA.

How do you keep your chickens from being bothered by hawks or other flying predator?
@HappyBurrowHomestead9 ай бұрын
We have used scare tape in the past. But now we have guineas and a few Roos that have been excellent protection. We had a close call recently and it was pretty awesome seeing them all in action protecting the flock. We also make sure they have plenty of areas to take cover from aerial predators.

Silly question maybe….why bake the shells before grinding up? Or did I miss that? And do you just pickle them at all? I just experienced a pickled egg the other day and it was delish.
@HappyBurrowHomestead10 ай бұрын
We bake the shells to kill any bacteria and they are easier to crush as well. We have not pickled any but I think that’s a great idea for us to try as well! Thanks for the suggestion!

I am a new subscriber to your channel. Although I am a city girl, your videos give me a better appreciation of what a farmer's life is like. I hope to view more in the weeks and months ahead. Your perseverance pays off. The closest I will ever be to being a farmer is continuing to enjoy container gardening with my husband. I love the yield that we plant.

What do you have the donkeys for ?
@HappyBurrowHomestead11 ай бұрын
Hi! They are guard animals. We keep them near our chickens and reindeer pens to help deter predators and keep out other critters. Maybe diseases are spread through animal feces so we use the donkeys along our reindeer pen to keep animals out that might bring disease in.

We are in the beginning stages of planning. We wanted to keep deer but weren't sure what breed. We were going to go with red deer (they're native to my home country) but we weren't sure how to deal with a very large bull come rut time. So we've decided we'd like to go with reindeer but there's not as much information out there as we'd like. There's a farm a state away from us that we may end up visiting and obviously we need to get in touch with the usda. It would be great to hear more about the process you guys went through with them.

That’s so exciting! I definitely recommend visiting other farms. They are a wealth of information. You might also consider joining RFA (Reindeer Farmers Association) for more information and lots of resources!
