Don't feel too bad on the main Tom, the volmageddon 2.0 liquidated a lot of retail vol sellers so the name of the game is to stay solvent. What I'd recommend going forward is to either hedge or close out any vulnerable short vol positions (the naked puts) when VIX futures are in backwardation. You'll save yourself a lot of headache. Don't short vol when vol is being a dick

I use strangles in high volatility when the opportunity arises. However, have learned that trading them before earnings is folly. You are just asking to be annihilated. Futures options are good for me, can still take a beating, but in high volatility it's less likely, and even if you do, contraction can always be a nice bandaid.

Because of this, he was able to 11x his account in 4 years and the drawdown on August 5th cleaned out almost half of those gains. He started this account with $40,000 in late 2019 early 2020. Now, he is only down about -17% YTD from his starting balance in 2024. He still is up 9x from 2020 after August 5th right now. I don't know many people who are still up 9x on their accounts after August 5th. Trading is all about managing your capital and positions as to how the market reacts. There is no "grail" plan that will work forever. If you think you can stick with a plan and trade the same way for the next 50-100 years, you are completely ignorant and probably shouldn't trade.

The 1-1-2 or 1-1-X, is great until it isn’t. It will take Tom years to make up this loss, for someone who has been trading for this long to be taken be surprise by this event is disheartening. The hedges he’s putting on now are nothing more than profit eaters and he will probably eventually abandon them. Go back to the wheel, sell some naked puts on stocks you wouldn’t mind owning.

To the 2X loss, as I stated above, the NP were still very far out of the money and If they market had kept dropping I would have either taken assignment and sold covered calls or rolled them further out in time. As of now, by not taking the loss on those NP's and am able to take two of those positions off today for a 90% profit. I take at 90 not 95%. Learning so much - thanks! Two things: 1) I see your new ES hedge was Oct 31 3500 5x BTO Dec 20 3550 3x STO Can you elaborate on what you have done there and how much of your portfolio you expect that to cover - or rather what you expect to cover? 2) Is your LT111 90 or 120 - and any particular reason?
@freeproc
@freeproc 8 күн бұрын
I'm now cautious on this one : Oct 31 3500 5x BTO Dec 20 3550 3x STO I used to have "112-2 calendarized" with the same logic ("120 DTE" Put debit spread + 2 "120 DTE" naked put + 2 "60 DTE" long put at same strike as "120 DTE" naked put) in order to :1/ reduce my margin requirement, 2/ provide a bit of hedge. But they didn't behave as planned in the 5th of August. Of course the "60 DTE" long puts sky rocketed but the "120 DTE" short puts skyrocketed even higher. When I did the math when the vix was at 35 (on the way down), 5 "60 DTE" long puts where in the red when substracted to 3 "120 DTE" short puts, which is not what we want (I didn't write down the exact figures, unfortunately). So now, I'm looking to do the opposite : 5 short naked put to buy 3 longer term (2X lenght) long puts for a debit. Time will tell if it is a good option. Simply buying 1 put can also be as simple and efficient.
