Amazing review. I liked the most when you speak through at4053b. Which pro mic would you suggest for violin recording to use with zoom f3?

So 32db float is both for recovering peaks and also lows?

The 32-bit float raises the question for me as to whether it's possible to record ambisonic encoded audio? First order would be the limit given the channel count but useful nonetheless. One ambisonic mic would output 4 channels of encoded audio to the X8. Zoom has a couple of 'surround' or ambisonics products but their preamps and file bit depth specs make them a challenge for doing ambient soundscapes. Zoom's higher end F-series products can do ambisonics but is about $200 more expensive. Thanks for this very useful to know about the gain staging on the mics and the 32-bit float option.

Can anyone help with a spec query I have on the F3? ..... What is the upper frequency repsonse limit of the line out socket when used at 192KHz sampling ? ... It's not in the manual and Zoom haven't been able to help - other than to confirm that the record audio bandwidth extends to 60KHz. I need to record some 50KHz ultrasonic sounds, and I need to use the line out (or the headphone out?) to feed to a heterodyne monitor input. So does the line out have the same 60KHz upper frequency limit as the input at 192KHz? ...... I'd love to know! :)

Using extension cables for both an i-phone and an Android phone I suffered hours of frustration. "Not connected to Device " was the continual screen message. When connected it sometimes lost connection in flight. (2 phones 2 cables tested) The supplied cables which had been set aside were used and the device and controller etc connect right away, no problems. Months of problems. Apparently there is electronics in the plug at one end. I would like longer cables but spending £ on wrong ones does not appeal.

Is this sponsored by Zoom? Sorry, but the F3 is a turd. Here's why: When recording if you plug your headphones in to monitor briefly, it turns the unit off. Doesn't just stop recording. Cuts power. It doesn't matter if you're half way through recording a live event for a paying client. Your recorder is turning off. Oh, and it also doesn't write the audio that had been recorded up to that point. I learned this one last week so now I get to spend hours and hours piecing together and cleaning up on-camera audio. Awesome. The Bluetooth app itself is pretty awesome, yes. That was covered entirely in this video. What wasn't covered and what is never covered is that if you switch apps on your phone (i.e. to adjust your Aputure lights) then the connection is cut. Ok, reconnect, right? Not that hard. Well, it actually is that hard...harder even. In order to reconnect, you have to power the F3 all the way off. No, seriously. You have to stop your recording, power it off then power it back on again and it will then finally connect. I really don't see the point in having this $40 trigger that only starts recording and does nothing else unless you have an assistant who can constantly keep the app focused and you never need your phone for anything else. FFS, it won't even pass the audio to your phone!! Bluetooth on phones basically IS audio, yet this turd can't do it?!?!? Those two faults make this recorder entirely useless for long form recording. Never mind that there are no mic plugs like they put on their H4N years ago. Never mind that the battery door is flimsy AF and is not replaceable. Never mind that you only get a couple hours on the batteries and you can't use external power. It's a turd.

I am a bit worried that you have not taken into account the voltage, usually a couple of volts, produced by the F2 that powers the lavalier mic. Be careful as you may damage some of your gear.

Is there a way to attach 2 pencil mic directly, do you think Line Audio CM4 will able to fit? Is there a joint adaptor to able to rotate the mic so it can be 90,120 or other form of stereo mix? Do you think it's worth all that or just get a Sennheiser MKE 440 stereo mic? Is it possible to record these 2 XLR as individual track and also the 3.5mm line in as its own track so 2 stereo tracks? I want to record stereo walk video with my behind the camera commentary on a camcorder, I can use the Sennheiser MKE 440 as stereo mic and a single Pencil Condenser CM4 facing backward to me that way, but can it be achieved and can I line all this out to the camcorder so I don't have to sync but still able to record to the Zoom F3 internally as a higher quality and also a backup? Are these build in rotatable stereo mic like Sony A10, many of the Zoom recorder and Tascam X6 good and don't need to make your own stereo pair and don't need Sennheiser MKE 440?

Beginner's question: when you say you can "bring back" the sound after it's clipped or peaked, how do you do that ? Can you do this in FCPX for instance, or do you need a specific music software ? Thanks.

It should be a case of just turning down the audio file's volume in whatever audio software you're using. This is the benefit of the 32bit Float, which dramatically raises the level at which the audio would actually distort.

Finally, somebody who hopefully will know how to connect my Samsung TAB A7 to my Mavic Mini controller. The DJI Fly app. connected to my tablet in a few seconds but the connecting cable to the controller remains an issue. I contacted a 'major' supplier here in Sydney Australia, and they shipped out the supposed 'correct cable' but I noticed on the cable box that it was for a Mavic Air 2, and not Mavic Mini. Naturally, they said it would work, and naturally, it didn't. When connected I can see the camera view but when I try to 'connect to aircraft' it fails to do so. Can you advise what cable I need or should I just forego the big screen advantages and stick with my phone?

Hello Paul 😊 I have both the Zoom F2-BT and Deity D3 Pro, which I recently got. I also have the Deity D4 Mini. From your experience, can these mics be used to record on this Zoom F2-BT? or is the F2 only for Lavalier mic use only? Could sure use your help on my question. I can't find any YT on this combo setup. Thanks in advance for willing to share your experience with me. I would be very grateful! 😊

Thanks for the review. When you're connected via bluetooth to the mobile app, can you still use the physical record button on the Zoom F2 to start and stop recording? Or is that button disabled when the device is connected and controlled by the phone? I ask because I like to use my phone for monitoring only. I want to start and stop recording with the Zoom F2 button.

I think this video is excellent. I used your link to buy a cable after searching amazon first. You picked out a very nice cable (micro usb to usb 3). I'm going to see if I can connect my galaxy tab s8 11" to my mavic mini. I got a mount that looks pretty good. Might be very heavy at 2 lbs. I'll find out. I already checked, and it supposedly works well with DJI fly. I was using a tiny refurb iphone 6s i bought just for the drone for about a hundred bucks, but now that I'm getting a new tablet, I'm going to see if I can manage such a large tablet in my hands. I have a feeling it is going to feel top heavy, while at the same time I'm excited about having a huge screen to see. Thanks again for this video, as it really helps a lot.

My head exploded at the end of the video. For two weeks I have been thinking about buying an F2 (apparently two pieces) for interviews and at the same time an F3 for the camera and microphone connection. Not even for a second did I think of the genius solution of being able to use F2 on the camera as well when I'm not recording the interview (then I connect the microphone directly to the camera). Subscribe and thank you so much for this simple money saving tip.

The biggest issue for me is the F3 does not allow for recording to the microSD card while in Audio Interface mode - you have to choose one or the other. With my Zoom F6, I can do both as long as I choose "32/24" mode. The 24-bit signal goes to the PC/Mac via USB while the SD card gets a 32-bit float recorded WAV file. I generally like this approach since renaming the files can be a bit of a hassle on the device so I just use those files as a backup in case I clip my recording - normally this isn't an issue but I love the insurance policy this approach gives me.
