I feel like RVW was reaching for something with this piece that he didn't quite find.

Whimsical yet with darker moments.

Barber is not a composer for whom I have much patience - his works are technically superb and prove traditional tonality remained valid during the latter half of the 20th century but most of his works simply are not my kind of music - however, I make a welcome exception for this piece which is superb! Thank you for making it available. I have already ordered a copy of the CD.

The overture to Das Modell is magnificent! Von Suppé out did himself, saving his best for last.

This remains the best recording of one of Tippett's undoubtedly great works, yet the Davis version is out of print. We all know that Tippett's reputation fell into the doldrums not long after his death but Davis did not conduct rubbish and was a huge champion of the composer. Certainly, Tippett's operas after 'King Priam' were embarrassingly 'trendy' while missing the mark by miles and there some were dud works bound up with confused ideologies the composer never intellectually grasped. This could make him tiresome while he chased fame. However, he was a superb composer when he followed his profound musicality and people, now young, will realise what half a generation missed. The 2nd symphony was admittedly difficult to play [see the Boult YTube video] but Tippett accepted tips from his old mentor and, later, Colin Davis. Few know that Boult had young Tippett on the podium with him as a student to help him decide whether to go for conducting or composing. Boult, Britten, Vaughan Williams and Walton all said that he was a composer at heart and they were damned right. Actually, Tippett was a good conductor of small choirs and student orchestras but not at ease with experienced orchestras. He "knew his place". This relatively complex symphony of the mid-1950s manages to sound English and not English in one go and has massive energy within a stock solid architecture and the masterpiece grew out of some effects Tippett had studied in the concerti grossi of Corelli. Oak trees from little acorns grow.

Thank you once more Rodders. Bonynge accomplished a lot and this recording exposes the arrangement by John Lanchbery which included a sequence from "Véronique". I suppose that the original version may be lurking somewhere for someone to discover. Messager made an abridgement in 1906 which he brought to London. The Royal Ballet d.v.d. is on Sky Arts television early in the morning fairly frequently, in a double-bill with Rachmaninov. There are two delightful trained pigeons and I remember at the old Sadler's Wells Theatre in North London when I met the lady in charge of them, at balcony level. She managed to find one under the ceiling.

These orchestral suites were not much available when I was growing up. I had the good fortune of finding a recording of No. 3 which I loved. But had never heard No. 1 until today and I'm quite impressed. That opening introduction has some things that sound decades ahead of their time and so powerful. You can hear in the sound world the perhaps the last remnants of that early/middle style that brought us Swan Lake and the 4th symphony. It seems poised somewhere between a symphony and a ballet suite.

Римский-Корсаков. Хрупкая прозрачная музыка. Полутона, нежные краски, вдруг - яркий колорит. Оркестр под управление Светланова очень хорош.
