Sometimes if the dog isn't too crazy, I'll just hold the leash, but out of reach until she calms down and sits, then slowly move onto the next step. I'm not about to take an hour and a half to leash up my dog. 😅 I do like the concept of just stopping though if it takes too long to calm her down and just not doing a walk in that moment. That poor dog looks so confused and honestly kinda sad. Either do the walk, or don't. 😢

I love this technique and I'll be trying it on my dog very soon. I picked her up (little dog) and was in the process of putting her in a carrier when she yelped and from that point on she got increasingly more fearful against me, ultimately hiding under the bed. I know I lifted her properly but in the process of putting in the carrier, something happened. Each time after I tried to reach around her chest, she yelped and ran. She just came out from under the bed today after a full day and a half!! She wouldn't eat, drink, or toilet that entire time. I'm fearful now to start any kind of training or desensitization until she is good and recovered from this last episode. It's heartbreaking to know that the dog you love is so fearful of you that they hide under the bed. 😭

My problem is when my 5 month old lab puppy does sit or lay and calm down, I try to put him on leash, he starts jumping and going nuts. It’s almost impossible to get the lease on.

Thank you, I've got a Pyrenees that started resources guarding. Even though we have been working with him since he was little. But I've never tried this before. I'm going to try it and see if it helps him. He's a sweet heart and I don't want him thinking when I give him a bone he has to protect it from me. I don't want it.

I didn't know there were so many dogs afraid of going outside. I thought only mine did that. It's like when I find out I didn't invent puppy blues. I'll try this method, because I was hours away from doing the dragging-them-outside-by-force-method, having reached the end of my wits.

This is great! I love how you think about training from the dog's perspective and how you explain how the dog is experiencing this training session. Very very helpful! I have a very fearful and nervous Chihuahua I am trying to socialize with people and other animals. Thank you for this lesson!

I used this technique for muzzle. But for collars also look into using clip collars so they don't have to be actually slipped over the head. Even Martingale collars can come with clips.

Love it. My baby’s ear is hurting now & I HAVE to treat it. She’s a sweetheart but she’s bitten me once now & still flares teeth. Shes not muzzle trained either. She’s a 7yr old shiba rescue so I’m not sure what the best thing to do is

My dog and I are soooo greatful for you! She is a rescue, /was/ scared of a hallway before getting outside. I had tried treat luring, positivity, toys, etc. and nothing was working. We were terrified she would get a UTI. I watched your video, tried it, and she had the confidence to go outside within an hour and a half. She is just beaming and so happy with herself, walking to-and-fro in the part of the house that used to scare her and asking for more walks. I literally made this channel account to say thank you!! You have made such a big difference for us.

Thank you, this video was very informative. I do have a question- i am doing this training with my dog when we go on walks. When he looks at another dog i say "yes!" and treat him. I usually just stick the treat in front of his mouth. More recently (we've been doing this about 2 and a half months) he has started turning towards me, but often not. Should i wait for him to turn towards me to give him the treat or should i keep sticking it in front of his mouth? Should i say "yes!" when he looks at the dog then wait for him to turn towards me to treat him, or should i just wait for him to disengage then say "yes!" and treat him. Like i said he usually doesnt look towards me but sometimes he does, and some days more than others.

I must admit, I’ve never found recordings of noises to be effective in this. Granted, I’ve never had to try and deal with thunderstorm counter conditioning, but I have with gunshot and crow scarers. I’ve always used clapping as my source of the noise as you also get the resonance from the clap itself. It’s also worth noting that not all dogs are food motivated, I have a little Jack Russel that has absolutely 0 food motivation, I used play for this dog as she loved the flirt pole. The note on the humidity is a really great detail and the note on the flash is another good detail to think about. Good video

Thank you I really needed this. My foxhound Annie does this all the time and she also eats bags of chips or any kind of bagged food left on the couch. She goes crazy. What are your tips for teaching dogs not to eat people food that is left around? I know it shouldent be left out but when it is and I’ve forgotten what should I do?

If you hold the ball in your mouth and drop it in to the bucket, the dog, cat, cow, horse, pig, goat, racoon, etc., will imitate you. This guy doesnt even know anything about animules. He never set foot on a farm.. he`s a city slicker....

So I have a question. I have been training dogs 25 years. I have never run into this. You are the only video dealing with people on the other side of the fence, not dogs. My neighbor is the only one he sees. He fence runs. I understand the concept you are teaching, but I never have the leash or treats on me when he gets home. So if I give my neighbor treats, does he throw them before he starts barking? If the guy had a consistent schedule, it would be easier. I can use family and friends on the other side of the fence and have him leashed with them. He knows all of these people. Do they wait for him to quit barking to reward? At what point do they reveal themselves? Building a barrier where he can't see my neighbor is going to be hard dealing with a 4 foot fence. Once the truck pulls up he goes into reactive mode. I don't want to have to resort to a choke collar. The other problem I have is my geriatric dog tries to discipline him when he does it. But I can't treat one and not both. I am kinda using treats to keep nutrition in the other dog. But once he goes into reactive mode, she goes into discipline mode. I have had mixed breeds heelers before. This is my first full blood. I was going to use him as a service dog, after he bit my neighbor, he can't be a service dog. He still needs a job. I will still use him at home for a service dog, but he is extremely high energy and needs a job. Do you have suggestions for a job for him? I am running into other minor issues I think time will fix them, so I don't worry about them yet.

David, how do you manage this when it's a reaction to everything, including things in the back yard? It's birds, any animal, leaves, smells, sounds, anything. It gets so bad that he won't potty, poop, or even pay attention to any guardians? Food, even high value foods, don't work. He's that super reactive. (I'll call as well) So can we even go back even further than where this dog is?

Both of those options are so expensive. Go down to the farm supply store and buy an electric fence charger, a roll of wire, and a bag of insulators. You can kit out your entire fence line for about $60, $80 if you have a huge yard.

but my dog dont care about treats 99% of the time, he may take it and then spit it out and walk away. and if i use cheese he gets sick... "pick a dog like Sammy" i cant pick any dog. i have no friends with dogs in this city all i have to work with is the other dogs on the street, half of them my dog hates and some of them hate my dog.... if i go to places with lots of dogs there is almost always some uncontrolled dog of leash running in to my dogs face. and almost all dogs that wants to say "hi" are pully, high energy dogs

Mine won't take the treat if she saw a dog even on the horizon, she is barking pretty much immediately and the only time she did accept a treat (it was a cat, less reactive to those), she started choking as she barked anyway! We have our work cut out with our rescue dog I think.
