Pretty sure I've read some Abe Dancer books and enjoyed them.

I have create a web page about comparing the script/transcript of Dune: Part One with the book. It also contains a list of which texts from the book are used in which scene of the film. You can find it by searching for my name (and the text 'I write, therefore I am'. My home page has a link in right top with 'Site map'. If you search there for 'Dune 2021 film' you get at the page.

I'm looking forward to this event - I've had a set of secondhand Dune novels in my collection for years, but never got around to reading them. This will be an opportunity to finally delve into them.

Hi mate, I was looing forward to hearing a review of Goldfinger but the volume on your mic is just way to low. Maybe you could fix it and re-upload?
@arronjameshookАй бұрын
Sorry about the sound. I wasn’t aware it was so low. I’ll see what I can do. Have you watched my other Bond reviews? I only ask to see if they’re suffering from the same problem.

There is alot of mistakes in the movie, uniform, machine operation, even the taxi Steve took was wrong, but FB has a group that points this out, one of the Admins was there when it was filmed. Check it out!

Any mistakes were pretty minor, considering how much they got right.

My knowledge of the US Navy of the era isn't that in-depth so that stuff would've gone over my head, but I'm a big British Military buff and I know how annoying it can be when there are glaring errors in uniforms or equipment in films, which usually wouldn't have taken much to get right. Though that can be funny sometimes like with the John Wayne film called 'The Comancheros'. It's set in pre-annexation Texas and everyone is armed with 1873 Colt Revolvers and Winchester Rifles.

This film has haunted me since I first saw it on television when I was a kid. To me, it played more like a horror film. From the engine coolie getting crushed in the engine to Makoto Iwamatsu’s torture scene to the end with the invisible enemy. Truly a powerful film, and probably Steve McQueen’s most nuanced role.
@arronjameshook2 ай бұрын
It really is an affecting film. It gets over the difficulties of the task the US Navy servicemen had on the Yangtze River Patrol at the time. I think this is Steve McQueen's best role and, to me at least, different from most things I've seen him.

I loved this movie but I realize I don’t remember much except that Steve McQueen did some incredible acting.
@arronjameshook2 ай бұрын
It's a great film. I hadn't seen it for a few years before rewatching with Shawn and I was convinced there was a scene where Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough were chased out of the town and onto the gunboat by an angry Chinese mob.

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to put this together! Practically this entire list is new to me, with a couple of minor exceptions, so I was clearly in need of your help! What a fantastic resource, definitely a video I'll return to regularly. Off to spend my Sunday evening reading about the Post-War Consensus then, by the look of things...!

Nice discussion! Haxan is one of my favorite silent horror films. It’s so unexpectedly unhinged and subversive at times. So many fantastic images seemingly ready-made for a Heavy Metal music video.

Great picks. Tales of the Next Great War looks great, will have to see if I can find myself a copy. There was a good article in the most recent British Journal for Military History (which is open access online) about Victorian war fiction and the first world war, showing how much they actually get right, and why they're important sources for understanding how people thought about an impending Great War. Worth a look if you're interested!
@arronjameshook3 ай бұрын
Thanks. I've had a look on ebay and there are reasonable looking copies of it going for between £7 and £16. I'll have a look for that article and when I'll include in my review of the book.

@@arronjameshook ah fantastic, thanks for looking, I'll get myself over to Ebay! That article is titled ‘They got it all wrong!’ - Victorian War Fiction and the First World War', and the author is J. Wintjes - should come straight up if you Google it, but let me know if you need a link!

Thank you. I was pleasantly surprised by the portrayal of Chamberlain, who I do feel does just get damned because of appeasement, whilst his previous achievements just get ignored.

This was really great, Arron - really good picks, and really in-depth accounts of each film. You also clearly know your military history, as well as just the war films themselves, which I thought you did a great job of putting across. Would love to hear more from you in the future on this! And btw, it's incredibly cool that Pvt Hook is a relative of yours, talk about a claim to fame!

I live in the middle of cattle country in the US, and beef is not cheap here. Just so you know, the people who have beef cattle, get under $2.00 a pound (closer to $1.00). So ranchers are NOT setting the prices.
