Sounds great, but for $$$. I get unwanted paint on sale to put on the end of fresh cut log's. After milling, For open frame shelter you can use old motor oil. For inside just us boiled linseed oil, two cotes on the end and joints. No need for fancy recipes that didn't exist until very recently.
@ShelterInstitute2 күн бұрын
Absolutely an option! Every person cutting their own frame should carefully consider their personal budget and try to make the best, realistic, decisions with it in mind. We use this product for frames in our design build firm for a variety of reason. One being the five basic ingredients have been used individually for years and we find they work exceptionally well, together.

Most old farms in The Netherlands (and rest of North Western Europe) are build hundreds of years ago using a timber frame, that's why they still stand today. Indeed by using trees from the site. I got confused by the title calling the stick frame " conventional".

Every build is different. This build is one of a kind but based on the Shelter package: you design, they will build. Example, I'm having a 24' x 36'-foot timber frame built. I added to the cost of the basic package; loft with 3' raise: Douglas Fir for the interior timbers: hammer beam trusses: pine on the loft ceiling: curved wind braces. It is going to be beautiful, and they were happy to advise me through my choices. I'll be living in a camper for a while, but If you dream it, you can do it! start small.
@SteveBuscemi615Күн бұрын
@@FITZIEBLUE Thanks for the encouragement. However, with inflation, insane prices for land, costs for construction materials and labor up, and a desire to be relatively debt free there aren't any realistic options. Including a small parcel (at least one acre) I'm estimating at least 400k for something small and move in ready to be built.

Built my three story gambrel timber frame house. Tin roof and walls inside and out covered with stone or tile. Solarium on the third. My journey is one timber at a time by myself. No living trees cut for this project. Mill windfalls or snags. Not easy, but it’s still mine. Working as a labourer at the same time… well perseverance prevails.

I love the looks of this one. Do you teach any sound deadening techniques in your classes? I love the look of timber frame, but the timber frame homes I've visited channel and amplify noise like a drum. Open spaces, hard walls, walking on the floor upstairs. You can hear everything in the house.
@ShelterInstitute13 күн бұрын
Thank you! We teach different ways to deaden sound in our Design Build course, not specific to timber framing, but it is more lecture based and not a hands on portion of the class. There are many ways to minimize noise transmission including offset stud interior wall systems, SIP floor system between floors or a cavity floor system, to name a few. The decking you see us install on the second floor in our builds is generally used as the sub floor on the second floor and finished ceiling on the first floor. It can be used as the finished floor, but like you said, that is quite noisy when somebody is walking around upstairs.
