I damped my Oktava 219 with a ring of foam, and it nailed the iffy retro twang. I also damped the body with silicone to stop it ringing every time anything touched it. A chunk of quality acoustic foam placed behind a mic with too much rear input on the cardioid shape can also mute unwanted room klang from untreated surfaces. Emergency fixes are usually cheap, and often surprisingly effective.

What’s crazy is that here in the states, a U87 costs more than a U89, whereas it’s the opposite in the EU, where a U89 is almost the same price as in the USA, and the 87 is much cheaper.

I just got a Blue Kiwi for 550$, couldn't pass it up. It was going to be the BCM104 until that deal came up. My only concern is with Blue out of business if anything happens to it there's no way to get it repaired. Apparently they have a unique capsule called a B6 in the Kiwi and the Bottle. This thing cuts through like a hot knife through butter on music beds.

I carefully reviewed all the comparison videos of the DLX (or rather the original L22, since there are more differences between the original mic and the UAD iteration than just the PAD) vs. the LX. I also think - and I'm glad I'm not alone - that the larger Sphere has a fuller yet cleaner and more detailed sound than the smaller LX. And that goes for any model you throw at them.

I have a UA Sphere DLX and I'll put my neck on it, unlike the original L22 it also has covered diodes. Unlike the Sphere LX, the cover over the LEDs is split into thirds. I have no idea why. It does mean, however, that the original Townsend Sphere L22 and its younger sister, the UA Sphere DLX, are much more different than you might think. It would certainly be worth comparing the two.

@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff2 күн бұрын
As I don’t know what the v9 is, I can’t speak to how they would perform, but almost all of the BFL large diaphragm condensers use the same capsule and nearly identical transformerless circuits. The v5, however uses what I would consider a better suited capsule for the circuit so it remains the one I feel is the best of the ones I’ve tried. This one, the v8 or MP81s is ok, but I still prefer the v5 overall. You’re probably better off getting an AKG Perception 220 or 420 though. Much better mics in general.

I have never used the Rode NT1, so I can’t really speak about how well it may work for you. Some people like that sound, but I think it’s a bit too bright for my taste. Someone I know who has one told me that it doesn’t sound as good over usb as the xlr output, saying usb sounded a bit hollow in comparison. Also, it doesn’t have a headphone jack for a direct monitor output, which seems like a big mistake. Of the two, I think the AKG is a better mic. It has a great capsule and the circuit is pretty much a copy of the u87 so you’ll get better mids. The AKG also shines if you can do the DIY single capacitor swap that I mention in my review video of it, which is somewhere on the channel. As always, the best option would be to buy both from a place with a good return policy, try them both in your own space and return the one you like least. Good video for so many reasons. Starting for the big truth, all mics sound good on your voice, and we "hate" you for that 😅 You belong to the 1% of the 1% voice privileged. One of the most frustrating things for people trying to do some voice works (I am talking as amateurs as a hobby), It is to find the right mic for our voice. Nothing magical, just what suits us best. It is a pity we don't have an A.I. for that, yet. But I find it extraordinarily useful this channel because it shows true tools professionals use in real life. This channel is priceless. Zoom f3 and Hush are incredible. And the SE neon sounds great, but the mind-blowing mic is the Line Audio cm4. There is a Welsh photographer who has a small, super interesting channel, and the audio is fantastic. He uses a Rode usb, not as good as this SE, and yet, with a great postproduction (I suppose), gets a fantastic audio. Hush is amazing, and I would pay extra for a) live noise reduction (for Zoom, Skype, etc).. and iPhone usability. The later very complicated, I suppose, if they need the power of the m1 chip (munimun)to run it. Urte askotarako, hiltzaile.
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff5 күн бұрын
I've seen that Welsh guy's brilliant channel and his video of the CM4 convinced me to try one. So glad I did. What a mic! I totally get it. My pipes do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to the sound I get from each mic, and that's by design, which is a topic I need to address at some point soon. But the struggle is real. Finding a mic that fits your voice like a glove is a task that can seem difficult, so I don't take it lightly that I'm not really the best source to demo a mic, but what I hope is that with each demo, while I may sound the same on almost all mics, maybe you'll notice that you feel something in the sound that you don't feel with other mics more than hearing a difference. Eskerrik asko, asko, asko. Benetan eskertzen ditut hitz onak.

To my ears it sounds reaaally good. Studio quality good. The overall timbre is great. I don't know how much Hush influences the overall quality of the recording, but even with youtube's compression in mind, I couldn't think of a reason why you shouldn't be able to use it for gigs. Also, is there any way you could test out and give us your thoughts about the Sennheiser Profile? It got a lot of praise and is said to deliver "professional" sound, although to me it just sounds kinda thin and heavy on the mids. But then again, I'm just a layman who likes to record audio shortstories as a hobby. EDIT: It's hard to evaluate a mic's quality, considering having your voice is already cheating. :D

I agree. The more I listen to the Neom, the more I can’t believe it’s this good. Spoiler alert: I used it on a short narration for Microsoft and it came out great, so I’m pretty impressed with it. I do get it that my voice helps me sound good on pretty much every mic, but the Neom grabs a part of my resonance that my other mics don’t replicate quite the same. Let me write to Sennheiser and see if they’ll send a Profile over. I’m intrigued by USB mics now.
@Mantamann6 күн бұрын
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Awesome, thanks Mark! Fingers crossed! USB Mics these days are hands down really good. The main issue for them might be self noise due to interferences in the cramped chassis, but that becomes almost redundant with AI noise reduction software. What marvelous times we live in.
