The common interpretation for anything outside of the free peoples seems to be that a maiar did it. Does that mean that the maiar are a wildly varied classification of spirits? Are there any other explanations? Are there perhaps things outside what is mentioned in the creation story, much like the biblical creation story

We will tear you a new one if you let anymore Balrog jokes out. Or Fell Beasts jokes, either. Especially if they aren't actually Balrogs or Fell Beasts.

I do rather like your discussion of the dangers of sorcery in Tolkien's world. You are accurate in relating that sorcery, necromancy and the like are seen as very dangerous things in Catholicism, and that Tolkien's faith informed his writings in this way. That being said, Tolkien also reflects the other side of the idea of "magic" in Catholicism. Wondrous things that are good are often like the "magic of the common every day sort" we find in hobbits, for example. I didn't realize this as a young guy, but came to learn eventually that in Catholicism, the wondrous is seen in that every day magic inherent in God's creation and God's plan. So, when looking at Tolkien's writing, the special, wondrous things are also often very down to earth: mercy, for example, courage, sacrifice, and generosity weigh in much more significantly than blades from Gondolin (though those are pretty cool, too). The idea is that we protagonists of our own stories, just like the peoples of Middle Earth, are quite remarkable in and of ourselves, especially when we choose to walk with Iluvatar. Also, in regards to musicals and horror, a few years back a high school in New Jersey, USA, turned Alien into a musical. I heard it was great. Maybe we'll see it again

As yousguys were talking about how much you wouldn't want to be in the action of the story, I was reminded of when Frodo was like, "I wish the ring had never come to me" and Gandalf's grandfather energy response. Frodo and Gandalf would get your desire to not be an interesting part of the story. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdeoltJ6p9_Oc6M.html

Yes, a lot of the older toilets in America are shorter and less long. Also, the big gaps are an unfortunate reality. There are businesses that I have to admit the proper doors and walls in the bathroom makes a difference. Like Buccees. Which is unique for other reasons as well.

In talking about the favorite race of Tolkien. He wrote a lot about the history of the elves, but as far as daily lifestyle, the hobbits had more written about them than the other races imo.

Do you think that the swords that Eol the elfsmith made were anathema to evil? Also, were there any evil elves?
@ADrunkHistoryofMiddle-earthPod

Arguably Fëanor, his sons, Eol and Maeglin were evil depending on who you asked lol. The swords made by Eol were full of malice themselves so i think they just wanted blood...

Would the other elven people have stayed in Valinor if the Noldor hadn't left when they did? Imagine Feanor staying with all that hate and anger and resentment staying in a realm that's meant to be the perfect place to live in. How long will it be before he drove the other elven people away to sail to Middle Earth? In fact, how long will it have before he's banished again and sent to Middle Earth as a punishment because he's causing too much trouble? As a writer and studier of human behaviour because of said writing, I think it was ultimately always destined for the elves, whether be just the Noldor or a mixture of many others, because of Feanor's attitude. He is a person that people wouldn't like to be around because of his attitude towards the Vala that would have grown to being extreme if he had stayed in Valinor, (and I do think the Vala aren't as great as the other eleven people think they are, other than Ulmo who saw the darkness Melkor had.) When it comes to it, elves were always going to return to Middle Earth because of Feanor as a person. He could Have stayed and been sent back as a result of being rebanished, and since he's a charmer, I think he would have drawn more elves to his ideas and go with him to Middle Earth, seeing the Vala being unjust. Feanor would have still been wrong in many ways, but so would others. Feanor and Galadriel are also my two favourite elves.

Interesting writeup. Elves were always meant for Middle-earth. Eru got a bit annoyed with the Valar and gave Manwe a talking to about it when they discussed the authority of the Valar. It's in the converse of Eru and Manwe in nature of Middle-earth. But ultimately you're correct, the elves would have ended up back in Middle-earth somehow, perhaps Fëanor was the catalyst that eru designed to cause this.

A good quote about Utumno is from Lost Tales 1: "Then the chain is smithied to each of these and Melko borne thus helpless away, while Tulkas and Ulmo break the gates of Utumna and pile hills of stone upon them. And the saps and cavernous places beneath the surface of the earth are full yet of the dark spirits that were prisoned that day when Melko was taken, and yet many are the ways whereby they find the outer world from time to time -- from fissures where they shriek with the voices of the tide on rocky coasts, down dark water-ways that wind unseen for many leagues, or out of the blue arches where the glaciers of Melko find their end." And that something still escapes "from time to time".

I love the juxtaposition of romantic ideals exposed when yousguys talked about manwe and varda being cheerleaders for eachother, and Rebecca talked about how it would suck if they wanted to grow up. I bet Tolkien never considered the idea of his ideal couples splitting up. Neat stuff. Great content, thanks for doing this.

I should point out that Eönwë was not necessarily the strongest Maia, he was simply described as the "greatest of arms in Arda," meaning he was unmatched where weapons were concerned.
