Ridiculous old right wing crank who thinks that the Kaiser, Hero-shite-o and Shilter, weren't all that bad compared to the Allies and is venomous and bitter that America didn't just let them win.

Anyone catch the irony of him stating that selling arms to the “freedom fighters in Afghanistan” is completely unobjectionable. 20,years from the date of this lecture and the USA begins fighting these same freedom fighters in Afghanistan - they stay for 20 years and the USA eventually withdraws, defeated

The Episcopal Church does have an optional day dedicated to las Casas. My guess is he’s never made it to a permanent place on the calendar because of his controversial advocacy for African slavery. His day is July 18th, the date of his death. Most saints are commemorated on the day of their death.

He’s very interesting & I plan to listen to this again. But I have to pose this comment & question: if we had not entered WWII, I think it’s at least possible that Germany could’ve conquered Europe & Russia. Then they would’ve looked toward America and we’d have to defend ourselves. With all of Europe’s resources, we could lose that war. Although Roosevelt was apparently very deceitful about everything, where we be today if Germany had won?

Szasz never defined what he thought "Socialism" nor what "communism" is (to him) Should there be homelessness in a democratic society? Why tie housing to employment when he wants to divorce insurance from employment? And is it a "free" market when it is totally corporate controlledl that bangs away 24/7 using all kinds of PSYCHOLOGICAL persuasion--on PUBLIC airways? As a social critic, I hold szasz as "reactionsry", (ie) anti democracy.

Not paying a penny for "healthcare" ? For the employed majority the employee still has to pay for their insurance-which might/not include co-pay and other insurance fees not covered--there's nothing free about this! Medicare--expensive basic coverage, not to mention what additional insurance fees for what is not covered-- but what you may want. Similar scenario for medicaid. Point is--you always pay! If "healthcare " is separated from employment, but its costs are not government regulated, then only those who can afford it will get it. If people took the pain to take better care of themselves as mature adults and not live as irresponsible children, that would drive down doctor's visits but probably increase costs--without government regulation of price ceilings.
@robertburatt598128 күн бұрын
The big problem I see with Szasz's argument is; How to make irresponsible adults into responsible ones? (both abstract and practical)
@robertburatt598128 күн бұрын
The massive and inherent flaw in the establishment of american republic is precisely religious liberty. This actually preserves divine and absolute right in contradiction to secular "limited government ", which overtakes the latter in "secular form". This is primarily due to ordinary citizens--from the very beginning of the republic--not being educated in how to live in a democracy. Consequently, america has a adult population unfit to live in a democracy--which it is NOT.

There’s obviously good points to this, but (as someone from the libertarian-left), i just see the development of the “state-corporate complex” to more so be the blame of the self-indulgent wealthy who purchased the political system than the politicians whom they basically choose themselves at this point. Doesn’t mean the government isn’t incompetent, selfish, etc. But it’s simple self-interests, it’s not always “big business wanting big government”, it’s big business wanting to serve their own selfish interests, which for big business sometimes and often regularly means cutting regulations, cutting taxes, cutting social welfare programs, etc. it’s the particular policies THEY want. You may agree with big business on those 3 points, but I said that to push back against the idea that “the wealthy love socialism”-no, they simply want their self-interests which turns out a horrifying amalgamation of both “socialism” and “capitalism” but is extremely far from both terms in any of their traditional or ideal senses. Take a look at some of Classical Liberal John Stuart Mill’s positions on socialism. He was a serious egalitarian at least later on. But classical liberalism and egalitarianism have large large overlap that is not seen in America. Anyways big business certainly does not want genuinely free markets either. Once they climb to the top, they kick the ladder out underneath them, it’s regular realist power politics. Sry for spam
