I’m still captivated by Professor Dreyfus’ courses that I took some 50 years ago at Berkeley including his interdisciplinary seminar in Strawberry College, existentialism in literature and film, Kierkegaard, and Heidegger Being & Time Div I. What was life changing for me was that the approach to philosophy immediately “clicked” as intuitive and true given my other exposure to philosophy. It continues to form the crystalline core of my views on life. This is in addition to the adventurous and engaged and receptive approach that Professor Dreyfus took to teaching, was certainly exceptional.

Thank you Dr. Brenner. Many times as even a novice nurse in ICU, I have called a physician to alert them of changes in a patient that I just couldn't put my finger on. Sometimes even suggesting lab-work or X-Rays that might give me a better picture of what was going on with this patient. It was so nice to hear you justify my work as an RN in ICU.

Thank you Dr. Benner for sharing your valuable insights on how the nursing process and clinical reasoning are used by nurses to make clinical judgments. You have impacted my journey as a nurse educator like no other and want to thank you for your body of work that has transformed how nursing is taught in our generation and will continue to leave a legacy for many more. With gratitude, Keith (KeithRN)

I love this.....thank you Dr. Benner and Dr. Felver!! I am excited to begin the Fall 2022 session. I teach freshmen in an ADN program and have been trying to be more creative and methodical at the same time to create connections for patient safe care. Bobbi LaFevers, MSN, RN

The profession of nursing is being challenged by MBA's that put business model on top of professional nursing judgment. Rule following can have it's positives, and it can be influenced by acquisition of informatics data. However, business model does not substitute for human caring or instinct. The Science of Caring develops out of skilled know how. A nurse is never a cog in a wheel. Thank you! Dr. Benner for recognizing the mastery of nursing.

Should skills/physical assessment techniques that are rarely used be taught? This was a discussion question posted in my physical assessment course as a graduate student in nursing education. My response was that the clinical rotation is perfectly suited for these sorts of experiential learning situations; watching an EGD, or hearing a murmur. These are opportunities that by experience may be more concretely learned and then brought into a situation in the future. I am posting this video into our discussion.

Part of Professor Dreyfus's allure as a teacher and lecturer is his humility and his kindness. He is a powerful intellect but he questions himself, self-deprecates and congratulates his students on their observations even if the observation is a bit off kilter.
