I'm currently a sped para and I was accepted into two programs. One was a multiple subject credential and one was a mild/mod education specialist. I was so torn because I had an idea in my head about what it would look like to be a mul sub teacher vs a sped teacher. You make the job look so fun and exciting and you have helped me make my decision. I will be going into my sped credential program in August and I am so excited! Thank you for sharing your journey! Soph, It's a hard state of affairs when the order of the day in school doesn't allow you the teacher to calm students down from separation anxiety. Back when I was a sped student My Separation Anxiety came from missing my favorite TV programs and having to be away from home everyday and having to deal with too much structure at school most of the school day and less structure at home for the remainder of the school day after school and into the morning of the next school day having to wake up and prep for school. How times have changed in life in so many ways. - Dwight

See if you can get the thicker pencils I Knock the regular size can be harder with their little hands. I know Ticonderoga has some that are called my first pencils they have them in the regular length and in short. I know they also have just pencil grips that help them hold the pencil the right way as well. I student teaching kindergarten through second grade special Ed so I know how hard it can be for some of them. I'm glad that I came across your account. Definitely going to be binge-watching your videos. When I should be lesson planning. 😅!

Use painters tape and the put hot glue over, or command strips. It will keep from damaging the walls. I have to use sticky tack this year and have no idea how good it works but will let you know.

Congrats on your new position! Thanks for sharing your classroom set-up process with us. I think having a designated color for each of your grade levels will be extremely helpful with organization and planning. For example, you can have purple math folder for your kinders and so on for 1st and 3rd - the designated colors can also help you prep for small group and organize materials and manipulatives. I teach art to K-5th and I use designated colors all of the time - I love it so much and it helps me keep their projects, grading, etc organized. 😊

Will your students be going in and out from their classroom to yours? I have cement walls and hot glue or masking tape works well.

Congratulations!! I am currently an inclusion RSP teacher and have always wanted to be an SDC teacher, but they don’t have any in my district. I am in California as well. I hope I can find an SDC mild/mod position one day.

As a mom of a special Ed student I would make a sheet where all the pieces are. Pictures are the best thing to help them, the pecs system is also a great option to have on hand too. A Lot of the pages that you made I have and my 5 year old daughter isn't in special Ed she loves to do the same thing as her brother. Also do the steps to follow ones.

Sorry to comment again but I just wanted to say for the one that you said you should have color coded the color words- I think it would be good to have both options. So two different levels but the same resource if that makes sense. So once they master the one where you do have the color words color coded then they can move onto the one where the color words are black like that one in your binder until they master that level.

I’ve stored the little pieces on the back with velcro or on a separate page like you showed and I’ve also done ziplock bags. You can tape the bag to the back of the page.

It might be easier if you separate things into the skill categories instead of having it one big binder. You might find your kids need weeks of practice on their rhyming or AN family words and it’s helpful to have the same skill in an easy to grab spot where you practice the skill over and over but with different materials :)

LOVE YOUR EXCITEMENT! YOUR ARE AMAZING! I have been teaching SpEd for 8 years with 24 years of experience with Autism. Just a helpful hint, word first and picture second. Be very careful with your fonts and colors. Children with diverse needs struggle with fonts -I use kinder font and bold black unless it is for a specific color , then use that color for the lettering. Also, make sure your Clipart is directly related to the sound for the word. You're doing an amazing job!

I'm moving to 4th grade after teaching 3rd and below for the last 6 years. Do you have any advice for teaching 4th grade writing? I've heard it can be a lot, at times Or even any 4th grade writing resource recommendations?

Reading specialist here in your CVC word page with the pictures and they have to draw the line from the picture to the word, you have the word ant..which wouldnt that be vcc? And then with the word cow, how would they blend that if "ow" is vowel team there? Just wondering how those would tie in to the skills that are on the other pages!

I'm currently working on my graduate certificate in applied behavior analysis and it sounds like your dog is having a hard time with generalization. For a few days or so, watch her and every time she sits like an angel, say sit and give her a treat. Eventually when she does it every time you give her a treat. Start thinning out giving her the treat. You could even have the treat in your hand but withhold it a few times interspersed with giving it to her until she's sitting without the treat in your hands.
