I remember struggling with some parts of this when i first read it like 15 years ago, but some parts o did think were actually great, like how the creatures got there in the first place, and that someon3 partly responsible was among them. However like you said, a little too much sexual tension ha

Man, I think you’re being a bit harsh on this one (and so are the folks in the comments too). Laymon is very silly and he plays up sex to a ridiculous level but that’s all part of the fun. He’s no Stephen King but he writes fast paced, full action fiction. Yes: rump, rump, rump, rump this and and rump that - is very annoying and he heavily used that word in every damned book that he wrote. Characters are very shallow (as with just about every Laymon book) and people just don’t react in a manner suitable to the situation they are in but I still really enjoy his books. I’m reading them all in publication order and just finished this today. I can tell you that the most recent books I’ve read including this one are much better than his earlier works which were just trash at times (although I still enjoyed those too). I just want to correct one point too. You mention about one of the savages saying that the survivors will escape through the elevators and that this doesn’t make sense because they’ve been trapped there a long time. This is false because as we later find out, Kyles mum who was married to the hotel and cave owner himself was one of the savages and likely told them about the tours (heck, she was probably the one who even said that line about the elevators). However, I have two significant plot holes of my own: - Why did the savages not cannibalise Kyles mum when she was tossed down the hole as they have with everybody else? - How have the savages survived in the cave for so long? Surely they would freeze to death or after a storm they would drown in a flash flood. Decades of continuous life in that cave… nah, I’m not buying it.

OMG who put this edition together? And...WHY????? This is my favorite vampire novel. I have adapted it twice, once for the stage and once for audio (although the latter could be a zoom show or a live radio broadcast on stage). Whereas DRACULA is very very plot oriented, this story is all about character and atmosphere. It reminds me of folks tales of erotic encounters with one of the fey, and the object of their affections never, ever being the same.

I always find it charming and fun but also almost intimidating when a book starts off with a cast of characters list! I think the same thing, "uhoh complicated stuff incoming!"😂 it reminds me of Anna Karenina, I think they did that in that book, I remember trying to read that way too young and just reading the cast of characters list and already getting so confused 😂 that all being said, this sounds like a unique and interesting book, your channel definitely put me onto the Gaslamp horror genre, I'm really digging it so far! Personal favourite of mine is Night Demon by Stephen Wolberius. It's a modern novel but it really harkens back to the old gaslamp literature in all the good ways. It's brooding, it's scary and it has some really strong prose that made me think of Cormac McCarthy. At the same time it's not slow paced at all.

I read the story as an elementary school student, in an anthology entitled "Tales To Tremble By." Stoker's story was the last in the collection, and sometimes, on weekends, I would read through the entire collection, always keeping "The Judge's House" for last. To me, it is far more horrifying than Dracula, more tightly written and not diffused over a set of documents, like the novel is. However, one thing I never figured out---and perhaps Stoker wanted to withhold it---is the motive for the Judge's execution of the student. Had the judge, perhaps, struggled with calculus during his undergrad days before law school? Stoker mentioned that the judge had been well known for his hostility toward prisoners; and does this mean any prisoner, even those ultimately proven innocent, or those who have been duly proven guilty and convicted? If the latter, what does the Judge, as a specter, no of Malcomson's life, or what in Malcomson's behavior or demeanor called for the Judge's wrath?
